Claims.
The present invention relates to hair rollers.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a hair roller which can be quickly and easily applied, which will properly hold the hair in rolled condition without slipping, and which can be readily concealed.
With these and other objects in view, the present invention comprises a hair roller hereinafter specifically described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hair roller according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section, of the hair roller; Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the retaining members prior to shaping; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the outer band.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises two arouate bands, namely, an inner band 4 and an outer band 6, which are hinged at their opposite ends, preferably by means of eyelet rivets 8. At each end of the roller is a sliding retaining member III of generally U shape. One leg of each retaining member is provided with a slot l2, in which is positioned the hinge 8. The bands 4 and 6 are spaced sufiiciently far apart to accommodate between them the retaining member ID for easy sliding movement.
In order to constrain the retaining members It] for sliding movement only, the outer band 4 is provided with two projections l4, near the ends and adjacent to the eyelet holes. When the roller is assembled, the projections I4 are received in the slots I2 of the retaining members.
The inner leg of each retaining member is provided with one or more tongues [8 to engage the hair. In the drawing, each retaining member is shown as having a single tongue, preferably of wavy shape, although more than a single tongue may be used, if desired, after the manner of hair pins.
The bands 4 and 6 and the retaining members ID are preferably made of a plastic material, and are either molded or cut from flat stock and later shaped. The retaining members II] are preferably molded in flat form, as shown in Fig. 3, and afterward bent into U-shape. The outer band is preferably molded flat, but with the projections l4 thereon, and later curved.
In using the roller of the present invention, the retaining members ID are slid out to their extended position and the bands are opened as shown in Fig. 1, the hair is inserted between the bands, the bands are then closed, and the roller is rolled up towards the nape of the neck, as
is customary with hair rollers. After the device has been rolled to the proper position, as dictated by fashion or individual preference, the user slides the retaining members [0 inwardly to the positions indicated in full lines in Fig. 2. The tongues l8 firmly engage the hair and prevent the device from becoming unrolled. The hair may then \be easily adjusted to conceal the ends of the retaining members.
The sliding members l0 have distinct advantages over the usual pivoted clamping device, since they can be more easily operated, and also because there is little or no danger of pulling the hair. Furthermore, since there are no parts which need to be swung towards the head, a tighter roll may, if desired, be obtained.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A hair roller comprising two arouate bands, hinges connecting the bands at their ends, hair retaining members at the ends of the bands, and means for mounting the retaining members for silding movement only with respect to the bands.
2. A hair roller comprising two anon-ate bands, hinges connecting the bands at their ends, retaining members mounted on the hinges, and means for constraining the retaining members for sliding movement with respect to the bands.
3. A hair roller comprising two arouate bands, hinges connecting the bands at their ends, and retaining members having closed ended slots to permit sliding movement on the hinges, one of the bands having projections received in the slots of the retaining members.
4. A hair roller comprising two arouate bands,
hinges connecting the bands at their ends, a U-- shaped retaining member at each end, one leg of each retaining member having a closed ended slot to permit sliding movement thereof with respect to the hinge, and the other leg having a tongue to engage the hair, and means for constraining the retaining members for sliding movement only with respect to one of the bands.
5. A hair roller comprising inner and outer arouate bands, hinges connecting the bands at their ends, a U-shaped retaining member at each end, one leg of each retaining member having a closed ended slot in which the hinge is received and the other leg having a hair-engaging tongue, the outer band having projections received in the slots of the retaining members to constrain the retaining members sliding movements only with respect to the outer band.
