HENRY COGSWELL, OF GREENWICI-I, NEW YORK.
HAME.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,937, dated February 15, 1859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY CoeswnLL, of the town of Greenwich, county of Washington and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Adjusting, Shifting, and Changing the Draft of Hames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in applying to the eye (which is now used for the purpose of holding the draft tug; and which is at present fastened to the haine) a movable slide-so constructed, that the eye and slide shall form a solid piece-n which slide, by means of a screw, can be so raised or lowered upon the haine as to change the point of draft to any desired position. Such slide is so constructed as to be made applicable to hames used for light or heavy draft, single or double.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
For carriage or light draft I construct the eye of the same materials now used, and adapt my invention to haines of wood or iron; and in their usual form or make.
In order to change the point of draft I attach to the eye a slide, made of iron, or other proper materials-the eye and slide being cast together-which slide clasps the hame. (Said slide is marked A in the accompanying perspective drawing No. l). For the purpose of allowing the slide A to work up and down upon the hame, without projecting beyond the inner sideof the same a channel is cut in the hame; of the length, in which it is desired the slide shall work; so that the inner surface of the slide, is even, with the surface of the hame upon the inner side, or side where the hame rests against the collar.
In the center of the slide A a hole is made, through which, the screw, (marked B in the accompanying drawing No. l) passes (which is intended to be a screw with a flat head).
Upon the outer surface of the haine, holes are made; at the desired distance; within the limit of the channel, over which the slide passes; (which holes are marked f C in the accompanying drawing No. l) which holes are intended to receive the screw B by the means of which the slide eye will be held, in the desired position.v
In case of the application of my invention to hames, used for common team or heavy draft I construct my eye and slide of the same material and make no change in the hame. .I change however, the construction of the slide; (which is also marked A in the accompanying perspective drawing No. 2) by causing a flange to project from the upper side of the slide; through which flange, a hole is made, for the urpose of allowing the screw; (marked B in the acompanying drawings) to pass into the hame. The hame is channeled in the same manner as described in the light draft hame-the holes, however, which are made in the hame; for the purpose of holding the screw B, instead of being made along the outer surface of the hame; as in drawing No. l; are made along the back edge of the hame, at desired distances-within the distance over which the slide A passesinto which holes, the screw B passes through the flange, for the purpose of holding the slide. The flange is projected above the slide, for the purpose of allowing the ring (which is marked l C in the accompanying drawings; and which is now `in use for the purpose of holding the pole straps, of the hames;) to be fastened in the most concvenient position in the center of the slide What I claim as my invention; and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The application of the shifting slide, to hames, as they are now used; by means of which slide, the point and position of the draft of the haines, can be altered as desired.
HENRY COGSW'ELL.
