' 28'Claims. :.'(Cl.211 11.9-03) I This invention relates to improvements .in pulley clothes line and holders therefor.
The I ordinary-pulley clothes line has y'fiWO reaches namely a clothescarrying reach and an direct 1 idle reach, these reaches movein opposite tions while the line is being-operated.
Frequently the articlesof..clothesare wrapped around both. reaches of v the line,--by the wind,
which hinders the operation, of, the line or in I other words makes. it difficult to drawin the the idle'reach travelling in the opposite direction to that of the clothes .carryingreach. The clothes also become soiled bysuch rubbing action; In
some instances thishinderance to the'operation.
of the clothes line has been so great that it has been impossible to draw in the; clothes and has clothes becauseof theirjrubbing action against necessitated the lowering of the clothesline from I the pole in order toremove the clothes therefrom.
An object of this invention is to provide means by the use of which the articles of clothes,if-3 wrapped around the line, do not hinder the .op-,
eration of the line and do not become soiIed p To this end there isprovided means, herein shown, in one form of the invention, as an auxiliary or guard reach, adapted totravel in the same direction astheclothes carrying reach.
The guard reach is disposedabove the idle reach of the line so that in case the articles of clothes become wrapped around the line they are'caused,
to lie on the guard reachto be held thereby from the idle reach so that said idle reach-may move I freely in the opposite direction without interference with or hindrance by the clothes, thus make I ing it possible to readily;operatetheclothes line to pullv in theline with the clothes; wrapped around'it and without soiling the clothes,

Similarreference characters represent similar parts throughout the specification.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the clothes line is indicated generally by the numeral 29 and is supported by pulley brackets 30 and 3| between a building32 and apole. 33. The clothes line in this form of the invention is composed of a single piece of line or rope arranged to provide four reaches,
namely a lower or clothes carrying reach 34, two idle or- intermediate reaches 35 and 36, and an upper or guard reach 31, these reaches being formed in the following manner. The lower reach 34 of the line extends around a pulley 38,
of the bracket 30, to form the intermediatesection 35 which extends from the upper part of the pulley 38 to the lower part of a pulley 39 on the block 3| at the opposite end of the clothes line 29. The reach 35 extends around the pulley 39 and merges with the guard section 31 which extends from the upper part of the pulley 39 to the around the pulleys 38, 39, and 4| the piece of I line forms a flat figure 8, and consequently the r two intermediate or idle reaches 35 and '36 travel in the same direction and opposite to the direction of travel of the outer reaches 34 and 31.
Therefore if the pieces of clothes 42; carried by the lower reach 34, and attached thereto in 1 the usual manner, arecblown over the *entire clothes line, as in Figs. 1 and 6, theyare caused to lie on the upper or guard reach 31 which prevents them from resting upon the intermediate reaches 35 and 36. Consequently since; the guard reach 31 upon which the clothes rest, always 1 Q travels in the same direction asthe clothes carrying reach 34 the line may be operated readily without hinderance by the clothes to draw, them in and without soiling them." 7
Thepulley brackets-30 and 3| comprise each a vertically disposed, flat O-shaped member 45,
Figs. 1 and 5, through which extend spindles 46A for the pulleys, and a horizontally disposed U- shaped member 41 the free ends of which may be secured to the sides of the O-shaped member in any convenient manner.
the U-shaped members 41 engage hooks 46 and 49 on the building 32 and pole 33 respectively.
The closed ends of Provision is made to tighten or slacken all of the'reaches 34, 35, 36 and 31, of the line 29, simultaneously. To this end the rope which constitutes the four reaches has a loop 50 formed thereon, at one end, through which the other end 5| may slip freely while drawing the reaches Subsequently any suitable knot 52 may be made to prevent accidental slipping of the end 5| through the l'oop 50. Thetightenin'gor. slackening of the line. may also be accomplished independent of the loop 50 by a special device 5h: which may be like that shown, described and claimed in my copending application, Ser. No. 243,956 filed, of
even date, December ,5, 1938.
To maintain the reaches 34, 35, 36 and 31 of the clothes line in their proper relation and definitely spaced fromeach other, when the clothes line is long, "as in-Fig. 2, there are provided means including one or more supports or holders 55, one
form of which-is shown diagrammatically in clothes line. -They may readily be attached at intervals to the clothes line as the hanging-of the articles of=clothes42,' on therea'ch 34, proceeds.
cured thereto. Rollers 58 are "mounted to run on the spindles 51' and cooperate with the intermediatereaches 35 and"36.- These rollersmay" be'composed of woodor other'fibrousmaterial and are therefore provided with" bushings 59 to prevent rapid wear of said rollers-on the spi j The "rollers 58 are offset with respect to each other, as" seen in 'FigQ'lysO as'to provide a diagp onally disposed slot' or passa e Way, 59 between them through {which the --in't ermediate reaches 35 and 36 of theclothes line'maybe'insertedor removed only when the holder and reaches 35 and 36' are placed diagonally with reference to each other so that the I passageway 59" is 'sub stantially parallel with the nearest portions of the intermediate reaches 35 and 36;"jAfter the reaches 35 and 36 have beenplaced between the rollers 58' and the holder has returned to a' vertical position with referencej'tdtheireaches 34 :and 31 it'may be attached atits opposite ends to-the lower and upper reaches 34 and'31, re-
spectively. 'It will be seen th'at' in this vertical position of the holderthe-flanges 60 of the rollers-'56overlapeach'other as seenin Fig. 8,
and'overlap the intermediate re'aches'351 and 36, 1 as seen in Fig.7, to thus-prevent accidental de-' tachment of the holder from said intermediate reaches or yice-versa.'- l
To attach each holder 55 to the outer reaches 34 and 3 1 its body part- 56 is provided with hook-like attaching means 6| and 62. The
hook-llk'e'means 6|; in" this form of holder, com-, V prises two upturned hooks 63 which extend to one side of the body part 56 so that thereach 34 may readily be inserted into'said hook-"like means from one side of theflholderf" The hooks 63 are angularly disposed with reference to 'each other so as topresent corners 64'and 65 to form a bight 66 in the reach 34 to thereby grlpjthe'reach 34 tightly and cause the holder travel therewith. To preventaccide'ntal detachment of the holder 55 from the"reach 34', there are provided two obstructing orguard members 61 associated with I the hook-like means and'which; in the present 7 form of the invention, are located one on the Each holder 55 comprises'a'body part 56 having two stationary; cantilever spindles 51 seupper end of each hook 63. These guard members extend diagonally over the reach 34 to prevent accidental removal of the reach 34 from the hooks 63 and thus accidental detachment of the holder from the line is prevented.
To attach the holder 55 to the reach 34 the latter may first be placed in'one of the hooks 63 and under the guard 61 by placing said'holder diagonally with reference to the reach 34. The
holder may then be brought to a verticalposi-' tion and the other part of the reach 34 may now be readily pushed down over the incline face 63 of the guard member 61 on the other hook 63 until it snaps under the guard member 61. To remove the holder 55 from the reach 34 the latter is bent back at one side of the holder and towards the body part 56 thereof until it clears the guard 61. out of one of the hooks 63.
members 61 extends under the reach 31 to pre-- vent accidental detachment of the holder from said reach. It is immaterial whether the holder is first attached to the lower reach 34 or upper reach 31. In any event, however, the holder should be brought to a vertical position before it is attached to the second outer reach.
The reach may then be lifted Subsequently theholder may be turned slightly about its vertical and the opposite end maythen be applied to the other outer reach. Accordingly either one of the rollers 56 is capable of running on the intermediate reaches 35 and 36 while the other roller, located under the reaches 35 and 36 serves only as a guard to assist in preventing accidental detachment of the intermediate reaches 35 and 36 from theholder.
Instead of the holder 55 thetype indicated by the numeral 16, Figs. '10 andll may housed in the manner indicated diagrammatically in Fig. 4. It will be noticed that the holder has only one roller 58a which is supported on a spindle 51a and runs onthe intermediate reaches 35 and 36. The flange 66a of the roller 58a cooperates with a guard, member. or finger H toprevent accidental detachment-of the holder 10 from the tical with that of the hook-like means 6| of the 1 All of the corners which come in contact with the reaches 34, 35, and 31, such as the side'edges of the body part and the corners 64, 65 and others, are slightly roundedso as to prevent cutting of the line reaches thereby. This is also true of all of the other holders herein described.
From the above it will be understood that each holder 55 hangs on the upper .reach 31 by its hook-like means 62 and is supported onthe intermediate reaches and 36'through the upper one of its rollers 58, and that the lower reach 34 is supported by the'holder through the medium of the hook-like means 6!. It will further be understood that the holders are secured to the outer reaches 34 and 31, and that they not only prevent the spreading of the outer reaches34 and 31 with reference to each other and with reference to the intermediate or idle reaches, but
because of the guard members 66, they also prevent movement of said reaches towards each other, which may otherwise be caused by the clothes when tightly wrapped about the clothes line. It will also be understood that as many holders may be used on a clothes line as are found necessary in accordance with'the length of said clothes line. It will. be understood that without the use of one or more holders, of theintermediate reaches. To attach the holder 10 toor-detach it from the intermediatereaches 35 and 36 it must be placed diagonally with reference to said intermediate reaches so'that said reaches may be passed through-the passage way 59a formed by the flange a and .the guard member or finger H. The finger 1| maybe struck up from the body part 56a and extends forwardly therefrom. It is located in a hori-' zontal plane sufiiciently close to the lower portion of the flange 60a to prevent detachment of the reaches 35 and 36 from the roller 58a while;
the holder is in a vertical position.
- To attach the holder ID to thelower or clothes supporting reach 34, it is; rovided with hooklike means 61a the construction of which is idenholder 55 shown in Fig. 7, corresponding parts being identified by the same reference characters with theaddition of the letter a. I
The holderslll, are used in'pairs, one of eac pair beingapplied, as abovedescribed,.to run on the intermediate reaches 35 and 36 by which it is supported, and to support the clothes carrying reaches 34. The other holder I0 of the pair is inverted asin Fig. 4, and is applied to and hangs from the upper reach 31 through the metween'theholders 55. be used to agood advantage on an ordinary two dium of the attaching means 6la. Itis located close to the other holder 16 and the roller 56a thereof engages under the intermediate reaches to support them. I
These holders 10 may be used in pairs instead of each holder55 as above mentioned-or they may be used individually withthe holders 55 as illustratedin Fig. 3, where they are located be- The holder 10 may also reach clothes line for the purpose of holding said reaches togethenand without the possibility oI accidental detachment from either reach of the clothes line; When the holder 10 is'so used the groove in its roller 58a may besufliciently narrow to accommodate only one reach of theclothes line. s
In the clothes line 2917 the intermediate reaches 35 and 36 may be located close to the upper reach 31 as illustrated in Figs. 12, I3 and 14; For this purpose the pulleys 38b and 46b and the pulleys 39b and 4!?) may be staggered with reference to each other in their brackets 41b, and the type of holder which may be used on this clothes line is indicated generally by the character 15.
The holder 15 is, insome respects, like the' holder 10 of Fig. 10 since it hasa similar roller crating with a flange 60b of roller 58b to prevent accidental detachment of the holder 15 from the intermediate reaches 35b and 36b. At its lower end, the holder 15 is provided with hook-like attaching means Blb which is also like that of the holder 10 and supports the lower reach 34b of the clothes line. The holder I also resembles the holder 55 since it is provided, at its upper end, with a hook-like means 62b to hang on the upper reach 311). This hook-like means 62b is formed by a single lip 63b bent from the body part 5612 to form an inverted groove 16 in which the upper reach 31b of the clothes line 29b engases.
The free end of the lip 63b is provided with guard members 11 which extend downwardly towards the flange 60b of roller 58b and cooperate therewith to prevent accidental detachment of the holder from the reach 31. 'Io detach the holder from the line the reach 31 may be bent or the upper end of the holder 15, which is free to slide on the reach 31, may be moved to one side in the direction of the reach, sidewise in Fig. 13, until the reach 31b clears one of the members 11, in order that the reach may be moved through the passage way 18, formed by the members l1 and the flange 60b of the roller 58b After thus removing the reach 31b at one side of the holder the upper end of said holder may be moved to the opposite side in Fig. 13 to complete the removal of the reach 31b from said holder.
It will be understood that in the holder 15 only the hook-like means Glb grips the clothes line, the hook-likemeans 6317 at the upper end simply hangs on the reach 31b but does not grip it, therefore the holder may shift slightly, if necessa,ry, relatively to the reach 311), thus permitting said holder or holders to remain vertically disposed with reference to the line in case the tightening thereof is effected after the holders 15 have been attached. Said tightening, it will be remembered, may be effected by the special device 5hr. When the special device ikc is used the tightening may be effected after the clothes are hung on the line and it is then that the upper reach 31b shifts slightly relatively to the upper ends of the holders 15.
In Figs. 15 and 16 there is illustrated another form of clothes line indicated generally by the reference character He and having four reaches 34c, 35c, 36c and 310. In this form of the invention the line is supported by two large pulleys 38c and Me and two small pulleys 39c and 400, each pair or pulleys at the opposite ends of the line being supported in a suitable'bracket, not shown, to suspend the clothes line between suitable supports, such as a building and a pole, the smaller and larger pulleys being used instead of the staggered pulleys of the same size, shown in Fig. 12, to cause the intermediate reaches 350 and 36c to be located closer to the guard reach 310.
The reaches 34c, 35c, 36c and 310 are of the clothes line 290 are also formed of a single piece of rope, but the intermediate sections 350 and 360 do not extend directly from one end to the opposite end of the clothes line but each reach is composed of two sections which extend towards each other to form loops 80.1: in which engage rollers 80 of a link 8| to thus-connect said intermediate sections.
All of the reaches 34c, 35c, 36c and 31c of the clothes line 29c maybe tightened or slackened, simultaneously, and also secured, similarly to those of the line 29 of Fig. 1, by means of a loop 1 50a and a knot 52c. I 1 The link 8|, as herein illustrated, see Figs. 30/ and 31, is composed of two plates. 82 separated from each other by shouldered rivets 83 upon which the pulleys 80 are mounted to rotate freely. The ends 84 of the-plates 82 are bent in sofas to facilitate its passage through a holder {85, Fig. 25. I 1 J The holder 85, which is used on the clothes line 290 of Figs. 15 and 16, is illustrated in Figs. 25, 26and 27 and is similar to the holder I5, shown in Figs. 13 and 14, since it is provided with a roller 58c supported by a headed spindle 510 secured to the body part 580 and because the lower and of the body part is provided with hook- I like means Bic, like that shown in Figs. and 13,
which grips the reach c to cause to travelwith said reach.
The hook-like means He at the upper end of the holder 85 is also similar to that of iholder 15 since it does not grip the reach 310 to permit slight, freedom of movement between he holder and the reach 310. It differs in o struction, from that, of holder I5, however, i that the hook 630 is formed at the upper end f a narrow portion 86 of the body part 560. A fur er distinction of the construction of the ho er 85 over said holder that of holder 15, is that the guard embers 11c do not cooperate with the flange 80 of the roller 580, but with-the-narrow portion to prevent Thus it is impossible to remove the reach, while in straight condition, from the hook 630. In order to remove it, it is necessary to fangularly dispose the reach and holder with reference to each other, as viewed from the top, Fig. 26, until the reach 31c clears the free end of the member whence the reach may be moved downwardly at one side of the holder, out of the hook 63. This operation is then repeated at the bpposite side of the holder to completely removerlthe reach 310 from said holder.
The intermediate reaches 350 and 36c are guarded against accidental .detachinent, from the holder 85,- bythe guard finger illc which extends upwardly tooverlapping re ation with respect to the flange "c of the roller 580 as viewed from the right hand side of Fig. 25: The finger I lc forms with the roller flange 60 a passageway 59c through which the intermediate reaches may be passed, for the purpose of attaching or detaching, only when the holder and the pair of reaches are angularly disposed with respect to each other in a vertical plane 1 in which the clothes line is disposed.
There is a natural tendency for gthe link 8| to remain vertical on the line, as in Figs. 15 and 30, and provision is made to facilitate its passage through the holder 85, one or more of which may be used on the clothes line 2903- To this end the ends of the plates 82, as previously stated, have their ends 84 bent inwardly, ias shown in Figs. 30 and 31, to prevent catching on the edges of the body part 560, the edge of the guard finger II and the side edges of the body part 560. The opposite'side edges of the body part 560 are also provided, for this purpose, with outwardly and rearwardly extending lips 81 and 88 which may be of any suitable length.
The invention may also be appliedito an already. existing two reach clothes line by supplying only enough new rope to provid the guard ltdreach Keeping costof n' aterial in applying theinvention. For

' to facilitate attachment thereof to the reach- (1 it is provided withanfelongated-slot I I8 through which' 'there'ach 34d extends diagonally'as shown in '1 "lg'.34, therea chfudbeing lnsertable into said slot through a narrowi passage H9; :Thus it wlll be understood that as the guard reach 31d pulls leftwardly on the upper end of the holder mlii sl me ns: ec mpos g twoputer H the distal end of the arm II1 pressed downwardly against the reach 34d to counteract the tendency of the guard reach and thus the holder H5 is maintained in a substantially" vertical position by the arm I I1 acting againstrthe reach 34d. It will be understood from Fig. 32 that the slot H8 and narrow passage IIO form guard members II9x to prevent accidental detachment of the distal end of the arm II1 from the reach 34d.
From the foregoing it will be understood that there is provided, by the additional piece 89 of line, an extra pulley 39d and a holder such as 92 or H5, a three reach clothes line including a guard reach 31d to prevent the clothes from grubbing on the idle reach 35d of the clothes line, and that in the event that the clothes'line is long additional holders 85 may be attached thereto, as shown in Fig. 18, as the operation of the .line proceeds in hanging out the clothes,
By employing a longer portion 89g of rope, as shown on the clothes line 29g, illustrated in Figs. 20 and 21, the use of clamp 93 such as used on the clothes line 29d, Fig. 1'1, may be avoided, and detachable holders 85, as shown in Fig. 25, may be used. In this form of clothes line the extra portion 89 of rope which forms the guard reach 319, is long enough to extend around the pulley 00, at the right in Figs. 20 and 21, in all possible positions of the clothes line and never passes any of the holders 15 and 92.
Thus the clothes line 299, has four reaches 349, 35g, 38g and 31g; two of the reaches 349 and 35g constituting the two reaches of an ordinary clothes line, the two additional reaches, 389 and 319,, being provided by means of the separate piece 899 of rope which is supplied principally to form the guard reach 31 to. prevent the clothes from rubbing against the intermediate reaches 35g travelling in a direction opposite to the clothes supporting reach 31g and said guard reach.
It will be understood that light articles such as hankerchiefs and towels may be hung, if desired, from the uppermost reach of the clothes line. If the clothes line is so used or otherwise the holders or separators 55 or 15 and the taut condition of the clothes line between the separators prevent sagging of the upper reach, under the weight of the clothes which may be hung therefrom, and thus prevent bearing down and rubbing on the intermediate reaches.
Another advantage of the holders 55 and 85 is that they cause the loads, which may be supported by the upper and lower reaches, to be partially borne by the intermediate reaches.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 36 to 42 inclusive the pulley 1ine29p is composed of only two reaches as the one shown in Fig. 32, namely a clothes carrying reach 34p and an idle reach 352). The clothes line 29p is supported at opposite ends by pulleys 90p around which it runs freely. In this form of the invention there is provided a plurality of holders I80 each having means 8 Ip at its lower end whereby the holders may be attached to the clothes carrying reach 34p. Each holder I80 is further provided with two supporting rollers 58;) to embrace the idle reach 35p to keep the two reaches close together. The idle reach 34p assists in maintaining the holder in upright positions.
A guard roller Hg; is also provided beneath the reach 35p to cooperate with the rollers 1Ip to prevent accidental detachment of the holder from the reach 359 of the line. To attach the zontal portion I1 I.
holder I to the idle reach p the latter is passed through the spaces 59p formed by the rollers 58p and roller 59?. I
In this form of the invention the guard means, which prevents the article of clothes from lying on the idle reach'35,consists of bars '31:) extending from one holder I80 to the next as shown in Fig. 36,
,The bars 31p are detachably mounted on the holders I80; To this end each rod has at its end, downwardly extending portions-I8 I, the free end I82 of each portion I8I being tapered so that it may be readily be inserted into an aperture I88 of the holder I80.
Each rod'81p is adjustable lengthwise so that it may be expanded in accordance with the distance between two holders and so that it may be collapsed to occupy a minimum of space while storing. For this purpose each rod is composed of two members I84 and I85, the member I84 beingprovided at one end with an eye I88 which embraces the member I85 and through which it may slide freely. The'rod member I85 is also provided with an eye I81 which similarly embraces the rod member I84.
Provision is made to prevent sagging of the rod 31p at the middle thereof when it is in its extended position, a stop I88 being provided on the member I85 which engages the eye I88 as shown in Fig. 42'so that the eye I81 is far enough from the'eye I88, while the rod is expanded to its maximum length, to prevent sagging of the rod.
To retain the rods 31p on the holders I80, or in other words prevent accidental detachment therefrom, each holder has formed thereon at its upper end two adjacent retaining members I89 each retaining member being composed of a back portion I10 extending upwardly" from the body part 58p of the holder, a, horizontal portion I10 extending from the back portion I1I and a tongue I12 extending downwardly fromthe hori- A detent I13 may be provided in the back portion I10, and a similar detent I14, formed'on the lower end of the tongue I12, engage in an-annular' groove I15 formed above the tapered end I82 of the end portion I6I of the rod. The members I 89 are resilient and thus it will be'understood that the rod ends I8'I may be readily inserted between the detents I13 and I14 or may be withdrawn therefrom at will, but that the rod is held by said detents I13 and I14 against accidental detachment.
It should be understood that in the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 36 to 42 inclu sive it is possible to use an ordinary two reach pulley clothes line and that the guard rods 31p may be spaced apart from each other and be located only on those portions of the line where long articles of clothes are hung.
While certain preferred embodiments of the invention have been described,'it will be understood that certain parts may be used with others and that changes in the form, arrangement, proportions, sizes and details thereof ,may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as definedin the appended claims.
