INVENTOR.
United States Patent F SUPPORT FOR HOLDING A PLURALITY OF GAR- MENT HANGERS IN CLOSELY SPACED RELA- The invention herein disclosed relates to the supporting of garment, hangers and aims to provide simple, practical, inexpensive means for closely grouping a number of different garment hangers and movably suspending them in such space-saving relation in a closet or other clothes containing compartment.
A particular purpose of the invention is to hold the different hangers on the support so that they will not twist or turn, but in such a way that different hangers may be placed or removed as desired.
Another important object of the invention is to provide the support for the plural hangers in a form which will fit and ride on hanger rails or rods of diiferent sizes and shapes without twisting around or getting out of line on the rod.
Other desirable objects attained by the invention and the novel features of construction, combination and relation of parts by which such objects are accomplished are set forth and will appear in the following specification.
The drawing accompanying and forming part ofthe specification illustrates :a practical embodiment of the invention, but structure may be modified and changed as regards this particular showing, all within the true intent and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a broken front elevation showing the hanger mounted on a rail and supporting a closely compacted group of five suit hangers.
Fig. 2 is a broken sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 1 on substantially the plane of line 2-2 of that figure.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on substantially the plane of line 33 of Fig. l.
In the drawing, the travelling hanger or support is shown as made up of two duplicate side plates 5 and 6 widely spaced at the top to confine between them a roller 7 and more narrowly spacedat the bottom to support the hooks 8 of various hangers 9.
The roller 7 is shown as having end spindles 10 projecting through journal openings 11 in the side plates and as having an intermediate V grooved portion 12 to ride a supporting rod or rail 13.
This V groove causes the roller to center itself over rods of different diameter and to hold the hanger against turning on the rod regardless of rod diameter. At the same time the roller is free to rotate and hence the hanger may be shifted along the supporting rod without tending to twist or to turn at an angle. One roller of this type is thus capable of supporting the hanger and maintaining it accurately aligned on the rod.
As a matter of economy this roller may be made of wood, turned all in one piece.
The widely spaced upper portions of the side plates are joined to the lower closely spaced portions by angled connection portions 14, Fig. 2, and the lower more closely spaced portions are solidly joinedtogether by means of screw 15 extending through an intermediate spacing collar 16 and held by a nut 17-.
Patented May This single releasable fastening is sufiicient to hold the parts together and provide a means by which the plates may be readily disconnected to slip the supporting roll over a bar or other support. While this screw fastener provides an inexpensive readily releasable form of connection, it will be appreciated that other such fasteners may be employed.
The lower portions of the side plates are shown extended in crescent form at 18, Fig. l, and these are shown slotted through at the center at 19 and as notched in horizontally spaced relation at opposite sides at 20, 21 and 22, 23 to accommodate the hooks of the five, in this case, diiferent hangers 9.
The aligned slots and notches in the spaced hanger portions 18 grip and hold the hooks of the garment hangers against twisting or turning, thus maintaining the garment hangers in the closely spaced parallel relation shown in Fig. 1. Thus the clothes on the hangers may be shifted back and forth as needed without twisting or getting out of order. v
Individual garment hangers may be readily engaged on or be disengaged from the rod supporting carrier or group hanger.
The supporting notches 20, 21, 22, 23 are shown in Fig. l as slanted toward the center of the carrier so that the hangers and the clothes on them will lie compactly together taking up much less room than if they were hung individually on the same hanger rail.
' In addition to saving space in a closet, the travelling carrier enables a group of clothes, in this case all of five garments, to be shifted in one direction or the other along the rail without disturbing them in any way.
The notches at the sides of the center slot may be located at difierent levels so as to offset the hangers vertically as shown in Fig. 1, to take up less room and to support the garments in better hanging relation.
The structure may be modified in various ways, thus the side plates may be permanently fastened together as at 15, 16, 17 in the illustration and be sprung apart at the top when necessary toremove or replace the supporting spool. Also it is contemplated that the two side plates may be connected together at the top or at the bottom as one continuous strip and be sprung apart when need be to engage the hanger over or remove it from a supporting rail.
What is claimed is:
A carrier for holding and transporting a group of garment hangers as a unit on a supporting rail, comprising upright flexible yieldingly separable side plates spaced to stand at opposite sides of a supporting rail and having horizontally aligned bearing openings disposed to stand above and at opposite sides of the center of the supporting rail, a roller confined between said side plates having projecting spindles at opposite ends rotatably and removably engaged in said bearing openings and having a midlength located, circumferentially extending annular V groove providing reversely faced conical surfaces effecting engagement of the roller with the 'top of the supporting rail at opposite sides of the rail center for centering the roller and supported structure and for holding the same against twisting on supporting rails of different diameters, said side plates having spaced apart portions extending below said roller and supporting rail center having laterally separated horizontally extended transverse notches for receiving garment hanger hooks in spaced relation to maintain garment hangers laterally separated and whereby said carrier may be engaged on or be removed from different supporting rails on springing the flexible side plates apart to release the spindle extensions of the roller and whereby said V grooved roller will hold the carrier against twisting or turning on the rail and the horizontally extended hanger hook notches will hold-the garment-hangers against twisting or turning on the carrier.
