FOG-HORN.

have invented new and useful Improvements on Fog-Horns, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to devise means to permit the use of fog-horns operated by steamv onsailing-vessels, which have heretofore been deprived of this valuable signalinginstrument, owing to the lack of means for generating the necessary steam to operate the fog-horn;- and to that end the invention consists, first, in the combination, witha fog-horn, of a portable steam generator or boiler adapted to be heated either by the fire of the galley range or stove or by fire in a separate small stove or furnace; secondly, in the combination, with said fog-horn and steam-generator, of a feed-water tank, as fully described hereinafter, and shown by the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the invention by a vertical elevation, partly in section, of the apparatus.

to adapt said vessel to be set into one of the holes of a galley range or stove or other like heating apparatus, and in which vessel the steam required for operating the fog-horn is generated. It is provided with a manometer, a, a safety-valve, a, and a try-cock, 00', which latter may be employed to draw off hot water for culinary or other purposes when the generator A is not employed to operate the fog-horn.
B is a feed-water tank of any desired capacity, connected with the generator A by a pipe, I), provided with a stop-cock, b, located at or near the upper end of the feed-tank, and by a pipe, I), having a stop-cock, b, located at or near the lower end of said feed-tank, which is further provided with a feed-funnel, 0, connected with the top of the tank B by means of a short pipe, 0, having a stop-cock, c.
In practice I employ a feed-tank of sufficient capacity to feed the boiler or generator with the necessary water for operating the fog-horn for one hour.
When the boiler is to be fed the stop-cock c, as well as the stop-cock b, is opened, and the necessary quantity of water is allowed to flow into the generator A, and the stop-cock b is then closed and the feed-tank B replenished with water. It the generator is to be supplied with water after steam has been generated the stop-cock c is closed, and those b 0' opened. Steam rushing into the tank B will force the water through pipe 1) into the generator.
D is a steam-pipe leading to thefog-horn E. It is provided with a three-way cock, at, so that the steam from the generator may be conducted either to the fog-horn or to the blow-off or waste pipe d, with which connects the pipe d, having a stop-cook, d, which latter pipe may be employed to conduct the steam into the various cooking-vessels of the range, to be employed for culinary purposes or for other purposes when not employed to operate the fog-horn.
E is the fog-born, constructed in the usual way, the soundproducing device being somewhat similar to those in wind or tongue or reed instruments, and consisting of astron g metallic spring fitting accurately over a slit of a width equal to the spring 0, the sound being produced by the action of the steam upon said tongue when rushing through the slit.
Those conversantwith the art of constructing wind-instruments are aware that any variation in the direction of the air will considerably modify the pitch of the sound emitted by the usual sound-producing devices. By applying the resonantdiaphragm above these sound producing devices to change the direction of the steam rushing through the slit the sound is greatly increased in pitch, while the concave shape adopted will increase-the volume of the sound.
In practice I prefer to construct the soundduct of the fog-horn on the principle of the ordinary speaking-trumpets, having found by experience that better results can be obtained, considering the amount of power obtainable from so small a generator, than when the foghorn is constructed in the usual way; and to still further increase this power I employ what Imay term a sound-catcher, which is a vibrating inverted cup-shaped spring, F, applied immediately above the reed or other primary sound-producing device to catch, as
it were, the sound and steam or produce a secondary increased volume of sound, that is then emitted by the horn. It will, however, be understood that I do not limit myself to any particular size of generator or to any particular construction of fog-horn, as these may be varied according to the furnace or galley upon which they are employed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In conjunction with a galley stove or range of a sailing-Vessel, a portable steamoperated fog-horn, combined with a steamtight boiler having a steam-feeder, and a threeway blow-off cock interposed between said boiler and fog-horn, substantially as described, for the purposes specified.
