Definitions
- FIG. 2 represents the device adiusted for use.
- Fig. 3 represents the mode of connection with the fabric.
- the mode of attachment is as follows: The pins being removed from the loops, they are then passed through the inner facing or hem of the pantaloons, the points being forced in and out upwardly until stopped by the coils d from going any farther. When the pins have been passed up their full length their points are brought Within the engaging-loops B, and the whole device is securely locked in position. A small portion below the coils dis thus left beneath the hem of thepantaloons, and prevents any part of the garment from comingin contact with the ground.
- My intention is to use only one of my guards on each leg of a pair of pantaloons; but of course more may be used if necessary.
- a protector for pantaloons-bottoms consisting of a wire frame, forming guards, and pins for connection with interlocking loops, all formed of one continuous piece of wire, substantially as described.

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM A. CAMPBELL, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA,
ASSIGNOB TO HENRY FRANO, OF SAME PLACE.
PANTALOONS-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,031, dated June 22, 1880.
' Application filed April 26,1880. (No model.)
of pantaloons from being worn or soiled by coming in contact with the ground. I attain these objects by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a perspective view of my device unattached. Fig. 2 represents the device adiusted for use. Fig. 3 represents the mode of connection with the fabric.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts on each figure.
A piece of wire or thin metal is first bent downward at both ends, leaving an intermediate straight bar, A, from which it is again at both sides bent downward, and the loops B are formed, projecting inwardly. It is then carried down in straight lines, forming the uprights C, and then again returned upward, as shown at 0. At the upper end of the bend c a complete coil, d, is made, so as to secure sufficient spring for the pins D, which are carried up on lines parallel with the uprights C. These pins D are made of sufficient length to allow their upper ends or points to engage within the retaining-loops B. I thus provide a complete guard, made continuously in one The uprights G are intended to rest against the shoe or boot, and the bends o to extend a little below the edge of the hem of the pantaloons.
The mode of attachment is as follows: The pins being removed from the loops, they are then passed through the inner facing or hem of the pantaloons, the points being forced in and out upwardly until stopped by the coils d from going any farther. When the pins have been passed up their full length their points are brought Within the engaging-loops B, and the whole device is securely locked in position. A small portion below the coils dis thus left beneath the hem of thepantaloons, and prevents any part of the garment from comingin contact with the ground.
My intention is to use only one of my guards on each leg of a pair of pantaloons; but of course more may be used if necessary.
I do not desire to limit myself to the exact form of the bends as shown, as it is obvious the same can be modified without departing from the principle of my invention.
What I claim isl. A guard or protector for the bottom of the legs of panraloons, consisting of two uprights, 0, depending from the cross-bar A, in combination with the pins D, spring-coils d, and engaging-loops B, substantially as described.
2. A protector for pantaloons-bottoms, consisting of a wire frame, forming guards, and pins for connection with interlocking loops, all formed of one continuous piece of wire, substantially as described.
' ABRAHAM A. CAMPBELL.
In presence of- Gno. F. GRAHAM, WALTER KER.
