C. S. WHIPPLE.
Sash-Lock.
No. 229,022. Patented June' 22', 1880.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. WHIPPLE, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO GODDARD MANUFACTURING COMPANY.
SASH-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,022, dated June 22, 1880. Application filed May 20, 1878.
full description.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient fastener for windows which will pensing with the shoulder c and sloth.
secure the window both when closed and when open a short distance for ventilation.
It consists, essentially, of a rocking arm pivoted at its center perpendicularly within one of the bars of the upper sash, and having at each end a lug to project over the meetingrail of the lower sash as the arm vibrates, together with subsidiary devices. Itis fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, as follows:
Figures 1, 2, and 3 show the different parts separate from each other. Fig. 4is a reduced side View of the parts as connected; and Fig. 5 shows the invention applied to a window.
Fig. 1 is a side View of the vibrating arm A, having lugs to a, a hole at Z) for a pivot, and a shoulder, c, on its inner side, with inclined surfaces d. There are also on the upper side of the upper lug, a, two recesses or notches, c c.
Fig. 2 is a front view of a slotted plate, B, to which all the parts are to be attached, having four slots,f,f, g, and h, and screw-holes k. In the rear of the plate, at right angles thereto, project two flanges, (shown as l in Fig. 4,) one each side of the central slot, h. These flanges have holes at m for the passage of the pivot which is to support the rocking arm. The slots 9 and h have beveled edges.
Fig. 3 is a front view of a small plate having a slot, n, and a small shoulder, 0, on its surface.
When the parts are put together the arm A is pivoted in the rear of the plate B by means of a pivot passing through the holes 912 and I). Then the shoulder 0 will project through the slot h to the surface of the plate, and the lugs a a will pass through the slots f f as the arm vibrates.
The shoulder 0 and slot h are not necessary to the operation of the invention.
The arm may be vibrated by means of the fingers placed upon the lugs a a, thus dis- There may be still other ways of operating the arm. The one shown is merely a convenient one.
The plate C, with the notches e e, composes a device to lock the arm in certain positions. The plate C is placed behind the plate B, the shoulder o passing through the slot g, and the slot 01. being the same size as the slot f, and so arranged that when the shonlderois at the upper end of the slot 9 the slots 11. andf are in a line.
Small lugs 19, attached to the plate B, and projecting around behind the plate C, confine it in its place, and form guides for it to move 1n.
I11 Fig. 5, D is the lower sash, and E the side bar of the upper sash, with the device mortised therein, so that the plate B is flush with the surface of the sash. By vibrating the arm A its lugs to a are alternately projected through the slots f and f over the meeting-rail of the lower sash. When the lower lug, a, so projects the window is locked shut by the upper end, 7, of the plate C dropping in front of the lug a. If the plate C be raised by means of its shoulder 0 the arm may be vibrated by pressing upon the inclines d. When the part 1 falls into the recess 6 both lugs, to
and a, will be withdrawn and the window may be freely opened. When it falls into 6 the lug a will project over the meeting-rail of the lower sash, and the window may be opened a short distance, but not far enough to allow of the shoulder 0 being easily reached from the outside to release the arm.
The device may be operated with one hand by placing the forefinger on the shoulder o and the thumb 011 the inclines cl. The beveled edges of the slots 9 and I1. facilitate operation.
To protect the sash a piece of metal may be placed thereon at the point where the lugs of the arm will strike the meetin grail of the lower sash.
I claim as my invention- The plate C, having slot a and shoulder 0, in combination with the plate 13, having slots f, f, and g, and flanges l, and the arm A, having lugs a, a. and one or more notches, c, substantially as described.
