NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
PATRICK A. SMITH, OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
HARNESS-PAD MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 229,017, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed February 25, 1880:
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK A. SMITH, of Stur'gis, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Pad Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to harness -pad machines in which forming plates and bars operate in conjunction with a forming trough or cavity; and the object of my improvements is, first, to provide an adjustable trough or former; second, to afford a simple and rapid means of forming and stuffing the pad therein. 1 attainthese objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the entire machine. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal top View of the machine.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A B are solid metal pieces, each consisting of a bed-piece and flange, curved at the junction thereof and forming a slightly obtuse angle. The bed-pieces are level transversely and curved longitudinally, and the flanges are straight longitudinally, except from a a to a a, Fig. 3, where they describe reverse curves, to impart the desired shape to the pad.
The parts A B are furnished with holes through their entire width to receive screws b I), which connect parts A and B, making a former to receive the leather of which the pad is made and give it the desired shape. 0 e are extensions of parts A B, furnished with slots at d and having the ends sloped OH.
0 is a metallic plate, formed to correspond with the bottom of the trough formed by pieces A and B, having a lip or hook, f, turned up midway at one extremity, and the other end narrowed and extended to serve as a handle, 9.
D is a rectangular metallic bar, constructed so as to extend around and inside the trough, with its two outer ends turned down and reaching out to fit into slots d d. E is a key for keeping the ends of bar D apart and in position. F is a strip of metal used to enlarge trough when necessary.
To make a pad, the pieces A B are connected by screws 1) b, formingasuitable former of a depth equal to the thickness to be given to the pad. The plate 0 is placed in a suitable piece of soaked leather and pressed down to bottom of the trough or cavity. The bar D is then inserted in the front end, resting on the plate 0, and pushed through the trough until a slot, h, cut midway in the cross-piece of the bar D, embraces the lip 0r hook f, turned up on the forward extremity of the plate 0. At the same time the ends of the bar slide up the sloped ends of the pieces A and B and drop into the slots 01 d, thus pressing the leather against the bottom and sides of the trough and giving it the desired shape. The key E is then placed between the bent ends of the bar D, retaining it in position until the leather is bent over and tacked down on the bed-piece. The key E is now taken away and the bar D and the plate 0 are withdrawn, the screws b b are loosened and the pad taken out and reinserted in an inverted position in the trough sufficiently back of its former position therein for the curve of the bed-pieces to keep the pad at the proper angle, and is there secured by tightening. the screws b b.
The pad or receptacle is now stuffed through its open end or ends, after which the end or ends are closed up with racks, and the pad is complete.
To construct pads of different sizes the machine can be adjusted by loosening the screws 1) b and placing thereon and between the bedpieces of A and B the strip of metal F, of suitable width, level with the inner bottom of trough, and, of course, using shaping-plate O and bar D, of suitable dimensions.
I am aware that prior to my invention harness pad machines have been made with troughs or cavities in conjunction with adjustable bars. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in a harness-pad machine, of an adjustable trough constructed of 95 the metallic pieces A B, the screws b b, and the metallic strip F, with the forming-plate O and the bar D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a harness-pad machine, the combination, with the adjustable trough constructed as above and having extensions or arms 6 e, furnished with slots d d, of the forming-plate 0, having a lip or hook, f, and handle or extension g, the bar D, having a slot, h, and bent ends, and the key E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
