9` Claims.
This invention relates in general to dry shaving devices of the type which do not necessitate the use of shaving preparations of any kind, and more particularly to improvements in the head portion thereof.
A principal object of the invention is the pro- Vision in a dry shaver of an improved form of cutter head which enables a much closer shave to be obtained than has been possible heretofore, while eliminating any possibility of injury to the skin.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a cutter head for dry Shavers which is so constructed as to make possible the use of a skin contacting shear plate therein of not over .002 of an inch in thickness.
A further important object of the invention is the provision of a cutter head for dry Shavers which is very simple in construction and extremely cheap and easy to manufacture.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.

Referring more particularly to the drawing,
reference numeral II indicates in general a cutter head for a dry shaving implement embodying the features of the instant invention which comprises a main body portion I2 (Figs. 2 and 3), an inner cutter I3, an outer shear plate I4 and a metal cover member I5.
The body portion I2 may be die-cast or otherwise formed in any suitable manner, and is provided with opposed flange portions I6 extending longitudinally on Opposite sides thereof. The bottom portion of each of the flanges I6 is hori- Zontally disposed, and the outer surfaces Il of these flanges slope inwardly and upwardly toward each other, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper end of the body I2 is provided with a semi-circular channel I8 extending the full length thereof. A centrally disposed, vertical aperture I9 (Figs. 2 and 3) extends through the body I2 for a purpose to be later more fully described. On either side of this central aperture I9 the body I2 is preferably provided with a pair of vertically disposed apertures 2| (Fig. 2) which are filled with oil absorbent material 22.
The inner cutter I3 is in the shape of a hollow cylinder which is longitudinally slidably disposed in the aperture I8 in the upper end of the body I2. The lower portion of the cutter I3 is provided with ay centrally Vdisposed aperture 23 within which the upper end of a suitable actuating member (not shown) is adapted to be disposed. This actuating member extends upwardly through the central aperture I9 in the body I2, and is adapted to be reciprocated in any suitable manner for the purpose ofmoving the inner cutter I3 back and forth relative to the body I2. The upper portion of the cutter I3 is milled or cut away in any suitable manner to provide a plurality of transversely disposed, longitudinally spaced teeth or blades 24. When the cutter I3 is mounted in its assembled position of the drawing, the outer surfaces of the blades 24 form substantial continuations of the outer sloping surfaces I1 of the flange portions I6 of the body I2.
The outer shear plate I4 is made from very thin sheet metal stock, preferably not over .002 of an inch in thickness. Because of its extreme thinness, the shear plate I4 is very resilient, and, as shown in Fig. 5, it is normally in the shape of a flat rectangular sheet. The central portion of the shear plate I4 is perforated in any suitable manner to provide a plurality of small hairreceiving apertures 25. These apertures are spaced as close together as will be consistent with the desired object of maintaining suflicient strength in the shear plate so that it will retain its natural resiliency. For the same reason, the apertures 25 are made as small as possible, while being' large enough to readily permit the projection of individual hairs therethrough.
In its assembled form, the shear plate Il! is disposed in its position of the drawing, wherein the marginal edge portions thereof are in surface engagement with the outer sloping surfaces I'I of the head I2, and the central perforated portion thereof is in resilient engagement with the curved outer surfaces of the blades 2e of the inner cutter I3. The cover member I5 is provided for the purpose of retaining the shear plate I 'i' in this position. In order to accomplish this purpose, the cover member I5 is stamped or otherwise formed directly upon the side and bottom -surfaces of the body I2 so as to conform exactly to the outer .contour thereof. By so forming the cover member I5, the upper end portions thereof are longitudinally disposed adjacent the upper ends of the sloping surfaces I'I of the body I2, and function to clamp the marginal edge portions of the shear plate I4 in their proper assembled positions of Fig. 3. The cover member I5 thus eliminates the necessity of securing the shear plate I4 to the body I2 by any other means, such as screws or the like extending therethrough. The longitudinal edges of the cover I5 are chamfered or ground off to provide sloping surfaces 26 which form smooth continuations of the curved surface of the central perforated portion of the shear 'plate I4.
Since the cover member I5 extends across the bottom of the body I2, it is provided with a lcentrally disposed aperture 2l which lcoincides with the aperture I9, in order to give access to the reciprocating actuating member for the inner cutter I3. The cover member I5 is also provided with astute-ble oil hole 28 communicating with each of the apertures ZLI in the body I2. Lubricating oil may thus :be introduced through the apertures to the oil absorbent material 22 which will thus constitute a suitable source of supply of lubricating cil for the reciprocating cutter I3.
In order to insure against longitudinal shifting of theshear yplate I4 relative to the body I2, and to provide a cutter-head -of pleasing appearance, an end plate 29 (Fig. 4) is rigidly secured by screws 3I, or in any other suitable manner, to each end of the body I2. The end plates 29 are so shaped that their outer edges are disposed in substantially flush relationship to the outer surfaces of theA cover member I5 and of the central or |perforated portion of the shear plate I4. Each of the end plates 29'is provided with an aperture 32 for the purpose of giving access to the interior ofthe inner cutterl I3. As will be seen in Fig. 2, the spacing between adjacent blades 24 of the cutter I3, is more than sufficient to span at least two longitudinally adjacent hair-receiving `apertures 25 in the shear plate I4.. With this arrangement, and since the inner cutter I3 is moved in its reciprocationin each direction a distance of at least that between the outer edges of adjacent blades 24, any` hairs which are projected through the apertures 25 in the shear plate I4 will be, certain to -be severed by one of the blades 24.
From the above description, it will be readily appreciated that the instant cutter head I I is of extremely simplified construction. Since the outer shear plate I4 is of a maximum thickness of .002 of an inch, the hairs projecting through the apertures 25 will be cut directly adjacent the skin, so that an extremely close shave may be obtained. The apertures 25 function to readily admit any and all hairs presented to the outer surface of the shear plate I4,.while the construction of the latter insures against any possible injury of the skin. It will also be appreciated that the extreme thinness of the shear plate I4, which permits it to be retained in its curved formation of Fig. 3, will insure close but resilient contact between the bla-des 24 of the cutter I3 and the inner surface of the shear plate I4. This curved or rounded shape of the central perforated portion of the shear plate I4 assures perfect cutting of the hair within a wide range of angular positions in which the cutter head I I may be disposed relative to the surface of the skin. Consequently,
it is not necessary to maintain the cutter head in any one particular angular position relative to the skin surface in order to obtain the best results. Since all cut hairs will fall into the interior of the hollow cutter I3, and since the end plates 29 are provided with the apertures 32, it will be readily understood that the instant cutter head is completely self-cleaning.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely =a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A cutter head for dry shaving devices, comprising a main body, a cutter mounted for reciprocation on said body, a separate perforated shear plate, a separate. metallic cover member having end portions extending longitudinally of said cutter for retaining the longitudinal edge portions of said shear plate in contact with said body to maintain the central portion of said shear plate in cutting relation with said cutter, and end plates mounted on said body for retaining said shear plate against longitudinal movement relative thereto.
2. A cutter head for a dry shaving implement, comprising a main body, a cutter mounted for reciprocation on the outer end portion of said body and having substantially transversely disposed blades spaced longitudinally thereof with transversely curved outer cutting portions, a separate and normally flat, resilient shear plate having a plurality of perforations formed therein, and a separate cover member engaging said body and having longitudinally extending end portions for retaining said shear plate in a curved position in cutting relation with the blades of said cutter.
3. A cutter head for dry shaving devices, comprising a body having longitudinal flanges on opposed sides with sloping outer surfaces converging toward the top thereof, an inner cutter mounted on said body between said sloping surfaces, an -outer shear plate, and a cover member substantially surrounding said body having upper ends adapted to clamp the longitudinal edge portions of said shear plate against said sloping surfaces.
4. A cutter head for dry shaving devices, cornprising a body havingr longitudinal flanges on opposed sides with sloping outer surfaces converging toward the top thereof, an inner cutter mounted for longitudinal reciprocation on said body and having curved blades forming a substantial continuation of said surfaces, a thin exible shear plate, and a cover member substantially surrounding said body and having upper ends for clamping the longitudinal edge portions of said shear plate against said sloping surfaces to maintain the central portion of the shear plate curved similarly to said blades and in cutting relation therewith.
5. A cutter head for dry shaver devices, comprising a main body portion, an extremely thin outer shear plate perforated to provide a plurality of circular, hair receiving holes, an inner cutter mounted for reciprocation on the outer end portion of said body adjacent the rear face of said shear plate and having a plurality of blades spaced longitudinally apart for a distance greater than the distance between adjacent ones of said holes, and a cover member engaging said body and said shear plate, said cover member having end portions for retaining said shear plate in a curved position in cutting relation with the blades of said cutter.
6. A cutter head for dry shaver devices, comprising a main body portion having sloping outer surfaces converging toward the top thereof, an extremely thin outer shear plate perforated to provide a plurality of circular hair receiving holes', an inner cutter mounted for reciprocation on the outer end portion of said body adjacent the rear face of said shear plate and having a plurality of curved blades spaced longitudinally apart for a distance greater than the distance between adjacent ones of said holes, and a cover member substantially surrounding said body and having upper ends for clamping the longitudinal edge portions of said shear plate against said sloping surface to maintain the central portion of the shear plate curved similarly to said blades and in cutting relation therewith.
7. A cutter head for dry shaving devices, comprising a body having longitudinal flanges on opposed sides with sloping outer surfaces converging toward the top thereof, an inner cutter mounted for longitudinal reciprocation on the outer end portion of said body and having curved blades forming a substantial continuation of said surfaces, an extremely thin flexible outer shear plate perforated to provide a plurality of circular, hair receiving holes, and a cover member substantially surrounding said body and 'having upper ends for clamping the longitudinal edge portions of said shear plate against said sloping surfaces to maintain the central portion of the shear plate curved similarly to said blades and in cutting relation therewith.
8. A cutter head for dry shaving devices, comprising a body having sloping outer surfaces converging toward the top thereof, a cutter mounted for longitudinal reciprocation on said body between said sloping surfaces, an outer :shear plate having a plurality of perforations in the central portion thereof, a cover member mounted on said body and having upper ends adapted to clamp the longitudinal marginal edge portions of said shear plate against said sloping surfaces, and end plates mounted on said body for retaining said shear plate against longitudinal movement relative thereto.
9. A cutter head for dry shaving devices, comprising a body having sloping outer surfaces converging toward the top thereof, a cutter mounted for longitudinal reciprocation on said body between said sloping surfaces and having curved blades forming a substantial continuation of said surfaces, a thin exible shear plate having a plurality of perforations in the central portion thereof, and a cover member mounted on said body and having upper ends for clamping the marginal longitudinal edge portions of said shear plate against said sloping surfaces to maintain the central portion of the shear plate curved similarly to said blades and in cutting relation therewith.
