My improvement relates to cases which are x used for packing and transporting cartridges for machine-guns, and which are adapted to transfer the contained lcartridges to the re ceiver of the gun directly from the packingcase.

:zo The object of my invention is to provide a case which is simple and cheap ot'con'struetion, and which will transfer the cartridges to the receiver ot' the gun in the most expeditious and simple manner possible, wit-hout having tc V` draw oii'the case after the cartridges are inserted.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate -my invention, Figure l shows a top view of my improved case with the top partly 3o oft', and before it has been pushed entirelyT on after the cartridges have been placed wit-hin it. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a' cross-section through the case after it has been iilled with the cartridges.

A and B are the two sides ct' the body of the case. They join together at the bottom O, where they are secured from being forced apart by a piece ot" paper, cloth, or other material glued to the bottom, and forming al 4o hinge on which the part-s can turn outwardly when not held by the coverD. It is not necessary that this hinge should be sufficiently strong to hold after the cover is removed and the cartridges discharged from the case. The

D is the cover. lt is intended to be made of tin or other sheet metal, and to be bent into the form shown in Fig. 3, with'lips upon -tridges into the receiver of the gun.

G is a separate and detached block, of the same thickness as the middle partition, E, which is placed between the two sides of the body when it is iilled with cartridges, to hold them in place before the cover is put on. 6o

H H are the cartridges placed on the case, as shown in the uncovered porti'ou of Fig. l. They rest against the middle block, G,.and are held in thesemicircuhu recesses in the sides of the body, as shown.

When the case is filled the cover. with its partitioii, is entered at onevend, and slides on in the grooves A', the middle partition. displacing the Vblock Gr, pushing it out before it.

The block Gr is merely a temporary device l ,'for filling, and is not a part of the completed case when ready for transportation.

It isl intended to cover the cases with pa per after they are iilled, which holds the cover on', and also willvform a sufficiently strong 75 connection at the bottom of the ease between the two sides ot' the body. This paper will be ruptured in the act ot puttin g the cai The cover rests upon 'a suitable seat upon the receiver, aud the heads ofthe cartridges enter the grooves as they are usually constructed, while as soon as the cover is 'entirely oli' the sides are detached and ily open or come apart, dropping away from the sides ofthe cartridges, 8 5 and requiring no withdrawal of the case to the rear to detach it.

The use of the removable block G, I consider the preferable method ot' iilling the case with cartridges; but the block first inserted can be of the form of the partitiou E, and after the cartridges are inserted the cover D can be put on as described, but without a partition, and then the tacks 1) inserted to hold the parts D and E together, so that they are removed together, as before described.

What l claim as my invention is- 1. A cartridge-case constructed ot the separable sidesjA and B, and 'bliesliding covei D, provided with the lpartition E,sul)stanriailly as-described. Y
