MANUEL JOS CUADROS, OF LIEGE, BELGIUM.
METALLIC CARTRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,336, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed August 2l, 1890. Serial No. 362,653. (No model.) Patented in Belgium'May 28, 1890,1To. 90,717.
To a/.ZZ whom. it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MANUEL JOS CUAD- ROS, military attach, a citizen of the Republic of Ieru, residing at present at Liege, Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic-Rim Cartridges and in the Means of Packeting the Same, (for which Letters Patent of Belgium, dated May 2S, 1890, No. 90,717, were issued with my knowledge and consent to Mr. Joseph Pennersg) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Metallic-rim cartridges as at present used only allow of packets of irregular shape to be made, and these packets can generally be introduced only from one side into the magazines of firearms.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel construction of the cartridge-rim, whereby the cartridges can be so packed that their rims rest against each other in a rectilinear path, with the cylindrical portions of the metallic shells in superficial contactwith each other throughout their length in such manner that the cartridges can be conveniently introduced from either side into the magazine of a repeating lire-arm.
To accomplish this object my invention involves the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cartridge embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, looking at the base end of the cartridge. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of acartridge constructed according` to my invention and having parallel grooves for receiving` the extractor of a fire-arm. Fig. i is an end view of the saine, looking at the base end of the cartridge. Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the cartridges packed in a holder. Fig. G is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a series of the cartridges cemented or glued together at their rims, and Fig. S is a bottom plan view ofthe same.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the cylindrical metallic shell of the cartridge, and 2 the rim at its base, which is cut away at opposite sides to form two parallel flat edges or faces 3, whereby a series of cartridges can be so arranged that the rims rest against each other in a rectilinear path and the cylindrical portions of the metallic shells are in superficial contact throughout their length, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7. The rim of the cartridge shown in Fig. 3 is likewise cut away on two opposite sides. Moreover, atthe cut-away portions opposite parallel grooves et l are formed in the base of the cartridge-shell directly above and parallel to the opposite fiat edges or faces 3 3 of the rim 2, which grooves are intended to be seized by the extractor of the fire-arm.
The two cartridges shown in Fig. 1 and 3 can be packeted, as in Fig. 5, into a holder in such a manner that the fiattened portions of the rims come in contact with each other. The packets so formed are rectangular, or nearly so, the cartridges being parallel to cach other.
As a further improvement upon the foregoing, the holders can be suppressed by uniting the so-prepared cartridges by means of any suitable glue, cement, or solder. The glue, cement, solder, or other suitable substance is applied either (at 5) at the adjacent iiattened portions 3 of the rims only, or also at one or more points of the cylindrical portions of the cartridge-shells.
The cartridges when paeketed together, either when united in a holder, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, or when united by a cement or like substance, as in Figs. 7 and S, are rectangular, or nearly so, in shape, and can be introduced from either side into the magazine of a repeating lire-arm.
Having now particularly described and ascertained thenature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is I. A metallic cartridge-shell having its rim provided with opposite parallel ilat edges or faces 3, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A metallic cartridgeshell having the parallel opposite grooves t and a rim 2, formed with opposite parallel flat edges or faces 3, directly below the parallel grooves, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of August, 1890.
MANUEL J OSE CUADROS.
