Description

(No Model.) G. W. PUT NAM.-
Gar-Coupling.
No. 228,675. Patented June 8,1880.
Witness es: Inventor:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. PUTN AM, OF GLENS FALLS, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT C. BLAOKALL AND CHARLES D. HAMMOND, OF ALBANY, N. Y.; ONE-THIRD TO EACH.
GAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,675, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed March 25, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PUINAM, of Glens Falls, in the county of Warren, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jar-Couplings; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full,c1ear, and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consistsin the construction and arrangement of a car-coup ling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, 1 will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved carcoupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view with the cap and coupling-pin removed.
A represents the draw-head, provided with the mouth B and interior chamber, 0. In the top of the draw-head is an opening for the insertion of the hook or coupling-pin D, which is formed with a curved arm, F. This arm eX- tends into the bottom of the draw-head, and is there pivoted by a pin or bolt, a, below the 0 link.
The hook D is formed with a shoulder, I), at the front, and its rear is rounded and serves as a pin for coupling in an ordinary link. The front of the hook is inclined back from the 3 5 shoulder to the cap G, the opening of the draw-head being made to correspond. The cap G is sufficiently large to cover the opening in the top of the draw-head, and it forms a square shoulder, d, against a shoulder, e, in the. head, so that all strain is taken ofi' from 40 the arm F and the bolt a, the bolt-hole being made large enough to allow the hook to slide into place and draw on the head.
In a recess at one side of the draw-head is pivoted a lever, I, which has a shoulder, i, 5 that comes under the edge of the cap, for the purpose of uncoupling; or it can be uncoupled by means of a cord tied to a staple, 71,, on the cap.
In operation for coupling, the link strikes 0 the hook, when the same will slide back as far as the elongated hole 00 in the arm F will permit, and then it rises up, allowing the link to pass, and falls back into place.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The pivoted lever I, having shoulder i, in combination with the draw-head A and hook D, with cap G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the draw-head A, having opening in the top, the coupling-pin D, formed, with the cap G and curved arm F, in one piece, and having the end of said arm pivoted in the bottom of the draw-head below the line of the link, and the shouldered lever I, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of March, 1880.
