N. PETERS. PHOTO-LH HDGRAPN E UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. ESTES, OF HARRISON, ARKANSAS, AND VILLIAlVI H. BUCKLEY,
OF SPRINGFIELD7 MISSOURI. i
PERMUTATloN-PADLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,619, dated June 8, 1880.
' Application fnea February 14,1880.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, JOHN WV. ESTES, of Harrison, county of Boone, State of Arkansas, and WILLIAM H. BUCKLEY, of Springfield, in the county of Green and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Padlocks; and we do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specifica tion, and in which- Figure lis a front elevation of our improved permutation-padlock. Fig. 2 is a view with the face-plate of the case or lock removed, exposing the internal mechanism. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken transversely through the lock. Fig. 4 is a reversed view of the faceplate detached from the lock-case. Fig. 5 is a detailed view ofthe bolt, and Fig. 6 is a view of the several tumblers in side elevation.
Corresponding parts in the several gures are denoted by like letters.
Y This invention relates to certain improvements in permutation or combination p adlocks; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A refers to the lock case or shell, with one side (the face-plate A) cast or made separate therefrom, which plate or side is formed with a stud or projection, a, to fit into a socket or notch, ct', in the lower part of the case, and with a right-angled plate or extension, a2, perforated and fitting down upon the upper end of the case A. The haspstaple passes through the perforation of the arranged in such close proximity to the top of the lock-case to economize in space, is reduced, as seen in Fig. 2, by which a tongue, b', is formed thereon, for the lower end of one of the arms of the hasp-staple C to rest'on. This end of the bolt is also provided with a lip or projection, b2, which, when the tongue b of the bolt is pressed down by the lower end of arm of staple, catches into a notch, c', in said arm of staple, locking the latter in place when the other end of bolt has been elevated into contact with that arm ofthe staple resting upon said end of the bolt. A spring, d, bearing against the upper end of the lockcase and attached to the bolt,`holds the latter in the slots in its tumblers when the bolt is unlocked. The bolt B is curved or bent into a hook shape, as shown at b3, its beak entering the peripherical slots of its tumblers, as clearly represented in Fig.
D D DZ D? are the tumblers or disks` having each a peripherical slot, el l2 -d d, and adjusted each upon a step or shoulder of a stepped conical shaft or spindle, e, cast with 1 or otherwise attached to the case A. This shaft is tubular, and receives asupplemental shaft or stem, j', o'f the disk or tumbler D. The same tumbler is provided with a pin, g, passing through slots in the other tumblers. These slots (designated by the letters lt h/ h2) are segmental in form, and no two of the same length, by which it will be observed that, as the tumbler D is turned by manipulating the dial on the face-plate of the lock, each ofthe slotted tumblers will be moved separately a limited distance independently of the others, and thus permit the confusing or moving of their peripherical slots out of line with each other when the hooked end of the bolt is elevated out of said slots, which result is produced by pressing downwardly upon the baspstaple, which will cause the locking of the bolt and staple.
Upon the face-plate of the lock is a stationary ring or circle, E, with a series of numbers, or figures, or letters, or characters, which ring or circle is raised from the surface of the plate, to provide an annular recess for the reception of the dial plate or disk F, also provided with a circle of iigures or numbers, Src.
IOO
The dial-plate Fis supplied with the keyhole or socket t' upon its external surface, and upon its rear side with la hub, t", having an angular socket or barrel and a circumferential groove in its exterior surface.
j is a plate detachably or removably adjusted to the same side efface-plate, and having prongs or armsjj, the inner or opposite edges of which enter the circumferential groove ot' the hub i', to hold .the latter in position, so as to permit otits being rotated. The hub il' receives an angular stud, 7c, projecting from the tumbler D, and forms the connection between the dial-plate and tumblers.
By causing both ends of the detachable hasp to impinge upon the bolt in the manner described, when t-he lock is locked, itis impossible to pick this by forcing the bolt, inasmuch as it (the bolt) is supported at both ends by the hasp staples or tenons, which eiiectually prevent the bolt from bein g turned upon its pivot except by the regular process ol` unlocking.
Having thus fully described our invention7 we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States-` l. In a permutation-padlock7 the combination, with the inelosing-case, of the pivoted bolt having one end provided with a tongue and lip or catch and the other end formed into a hook7 the detachable notched hasp-staple with both ends resting upon the bolt when locked, and the peripherically slotted tumblers, substantially as and Ji'or the purpose set forth.
2. In a permutationpadlock, the combination, with the pivoted bolt and its loekin g m echi anism, ofthe detachable hasp-staple7 both of whose ends rest upon the bolt, and are thus secured in a locked position, substantially as set forth.
3. In a permutation pad or other lock, the combination, with the i'nclosing-case having a notch or socket in one end, and in its top end one or more apertures, ot' the front or face plate having a projection at its lower or one end and a right-angled perforated plate at' its upper end, and the detachable haspstaple, substantially as andfor the purpose specified. Y 'Y 4. The combination of the inclosing-case7 with its face-plate provided with a dial-plate and registering circle or ring, a series of tumblers havin gsegmental slots of unequal length, and also peripherical slots, and one tumbler provided with a pin enterinthe said segmental slots of the other tumblers, a pivoted bolt having one end provided with a tongue and lip and the other end with a hook and a detachable hasp-staple, whose ends penetrate the lock-case and rest upon the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aiiixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
