SAMUEL REED, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES ISHAM, OF SAME PLACE.
REVERSIBLE SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,559, dated June 8, 1880,
Application filed N ovembcr 8, 1879. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL REED, of Gincinnati, county ofI-Iamilton, and State ofOhio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Slates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detailed view taken through one of the straps.
The nature of my invention relates to a new and improved reversible slate, hinged in such a manner that the two members may be folded from back to back, presenting at all times an even and neat appearance.
It pertains more particularly to the method of fastening the straps or hinging the members of the two slates; and it consists, mainly, in piercing the sides of the frames by narrow slots to receive snugly the above-named straps, which are held in position by nails or pins driven through from the edge of the slate.
The general objects of reversible slates are so well known as to require no detailed explanation.
The special advantages of the reversible slate herein shown are that the action of the same when being folded is noiseless and easy; that the frames of the two slates do not get out of line with relation to each other that the fastening herein represented does not materially weaken the frames, and that it is strong, durable, and cheap; and, further, that the hinge and fastenin gs present no hard surfaces or angles to mar the desk, but in every way fill the many requirements of a good reversible slate.
In construction my invention is as follows:
A and A are the two slates, hinged together by means of the four flexible straps to, b, c,
such manner as to receive the ends of the four straps mentioned.
As will be observed by the drawings, strap a passes through and is fastened to frame of slate A by one end. The other end passes through the frame of the other slate from the opposite side. The same construction is followed in strap 0, while those marked 1) (I are attached and work in a reverse manner.
The operation of my invention becomes obvious from an examination of the description and drawings. As one slate is turned on the other each strap is flexed at aconstantly-moving point, presenting the feature of rolling a strap around a cylinder.
By means of the straps c b, as shown in the drawings, the two form one complete hinge for one end of the slates, while ed at the other end act in a similar capacity.
I am aware that flexible straps have been used to form reversible slates by crossing the same, as above described; but the method of fastening the straps has been defective.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a reversible slate, the combination of the slates A A, slots a, and straps c b c (1, when constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
