G THE RECEIVING AND DISCHARGI'NG POINTS'OF LIGHTNING- CON-DUC'FORS- specification forining part of Letters Pa 'rent No. 2.284, dama October 9,1841.
To all whom it may co'ncern Be it known that I, WILLIAMA. OncUcrT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, electriciamhave.
invcnted a new and useful improvement in the connection of lightning-conductor's applied'to buildings for their protectiom'and the application of the dischnrging and receiving points thereto andI do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being to the'vaccompanying form my specification, setting forth. the'principles of vmy improvement,'by which it may be distinguished from other inventions' of a. like uthereof nsl claim, and for which I solicit an ex-V clusive privilege to be secured'to me for fourteen years by Letters Patent.
i My improvement consists in the method'of connecting the'rods', by means of a nut or. hollow cylinder made of composition or other suit'- ble metal, with the discharging and receiving point cast on the same, projecting at right anserted by means of` a screw upon the end of each rod, turned into said nut orhollow cylinder in which the thread of ajscrew is cut. Figure 1 represents two rocls of a' lightning-- conductor connected'in the m'ann'er proposed. A is the hollow cylinder; 'of metal, Withthe thread of a screw'cut therein,'-into| which vthe iron or copper rods B B are screwed. `y-C is the dischar'ging an' reeeiving point, of composition or other suitable'metal.
Fig. 2 represents a-horizontal section of 'the` nut A, exhibiting simply the modeof connection' of theyrods B B,'without showing-the points O.
The utilit consists in its forming the best combination of the most important requisites "of' lightning- 'conductors-vi z.`, a perfect, close, and strong connection of the different rods thepresenty of m-y'above-claimed invention.. w
'- ing a great number of discharging and receiving points made of some metal little' liable' to 'oxidation; and, lastly, economy.
This method's Superior to the usual oneof angles to the ro,d,rand passingvthis, .point through an eye turned on theendofthe nzxlt' rod, and securing both to the side of the .buildcloser, stron ger, and not liableto be brokli .by the removal of the staple, and,`al'sinth `i7fiby making' the nut and pointofa metaln'dt 'i to oxidation, while the rods are [made of, a cheaper metal, (like iron, liab le tooxfidatrong most of the advantages' of the u'seotrodshot Iiable to oxidation are securedwiththefheap.. ness ot iron rods'." 'lt is superior'to the'iode' of fiattening and lapp'ing the ends ofthe rods and screwing one end of the 'dischargingtand receiving pointthrough th'e'two, in that'the connection'is much Closer and Stronger, since --in that mode the rods willbecomedis'connected entirelyin case the point should break, which, from the nature. of the case, it is liable to, or' should become a little uuscrewed. 4 i By adopt'ing my mode the point is much less easily broken, and, if broken, the ro'ds will remain as strongly connected as before. What I claim as myinvention'isj' The method before describedof connecting 'the 'rods of ligh'tning-conductors, by means of lanut or'hollow cylinder, with the recei-ving and discharg-ing point cast thereon, as before 'de'scrihed but I expressly disclaim the invenvtion of connecting rods of metal Iby'aa nut or" hollow cylinder. o z: In testimony thattheabovo is a truefdescription of V:my said inven tion I have hereunto set my hand.
