CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed July 30, 1941 I 4 I I 4 I @Ermlfijknez;
INVENTOR.
- Byamymvr Fatented May 26, 1942 i i warren stare s PATENT OFFICE CIGARETTE HOLDER I Herman F. Stebner, Walla Walla, 'Washl' Ashrams my 30, 1941, Serial No, 404,597 f ream, (01.131-190) a This invention relates tocigarette holders, and its general' object .istO provide aholder for a cigarette or. the like, while smoking the same, which notonly facilitates the application and removal of the cigarette with respect thereto, but holds the same against casual removal therefrom, in that the holder includes a stationary jaw and a pivoted jaw, the latter being normally urged and held in closed or clamping relation with the stationary jaw, for cooperation therewith to secure the cigarette within the holder, and the movable jaw has a finger piece or handle associated therewith for releasing the same from the cigarette, to allow removal thereof from the holder.
A further object is to provide a cigarette holder of the character set forth, that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely eflicient in operation, use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of the holder which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approxi mately on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the movable jaw in released or,
open position. 7
Figure 5 is an end view looking toward the front of the holder;
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that my holder includes a cylindrical body I having a mouthpiece 2 formed therewith, the mouthpiece being tapered or gradually reduced in flat formation to its outer end and together with the body, is provided with the usual smoke passage or duct 3.
Formed on the body and extending forwardly therefrom is an elongated lower stationary jaw d of arcuate formation in cross section, and the body is provided with a recess 5 extending longitudinally of the upper portion thereof from its front end and decreasing in depth accordingly, so that the bottom wall of the recess is inclined upwardly from the front end of the bodyto the top thereof, as clearly shown in Figure}; 5 The body is also provided with an arcuate groove about its forward -end and seatedfl within" the grooveis a flat ring-band B-that'is-secured therein by apivot-pin 1 welded or otherwise fixed to and bridging the enlarged upper ends of the band, as best shown in Figure 3.
The upper or movable jaw 8 is of a length coextensive with that of the stationary jaw, and is likewise of arcuate formation in cross section to cooperate with the stationary jaw to'not only provide a bore for receiving a cigarette therein, but to set up a clamping engagement with the cigarette, when the jaw 8 is in its normal position of Figures 1 and 2 and whenin said position, the longitudinal flat inner faces of the jaws are disposed in face to face engagement, while the inner end of the movable jaw is engaged with the front end of the body.
The jaw 8 is connected to the body for free swinging movement into and out of clamping relation with respect to the jaw 4, and for that purpose, I provide a relatively'narrow strip 9 riveted or otherwise secured to and extending longitudinally of the upper portion of the jaw 8 throughout its length, as well as a considerable distance rearwardly therefrom. The rear portion 10 of the strip is bent at an upward inclination to provide a finger piece or h'andle overlying the recess 5. Formed on the strip at the juncture of the rear or handle portion ill, with the remaining portion of the strip, is a pair of spaced parallel ears ll countersunk in the forward end of the recess 5 and mounted for movement on the pivot pin 1. In order to urge and hold the jaw 8 in normally closed or clamping position, I provide a leaf spring 12 having one end secured to the outer end of the rear portion or handle [0 of the strip 9, while the remaining portion of the spring is free and mounted in the recess 5 for sliding movement, as will be apparent upon inspection of Figure 4.
Formed midway its ends to the outer end of the strip 9 for disposal flush with the outer ends of the jaws, is a flat arcuate member l3 shaped to follow'the curvature of the jawsand of a length to extend below the juncture of the movable jaw with the stationary jaw, to bear against the opposite sides of the latter to hold themovable jaw flush with the stationary jaw, when the movable jaw is in closed position, as best shown in Figure 5.
the drawing, it is believed that the operation of my holder will be obvious, but it might be mentioned that when it is desired to apply a cigarette thereto, the movable j aw 8 is disposed to its stationary jaw formed on the body and extending forwardly therefrom, said body having an annular groove about the same at the juncture open position of Figure 4 against theaction of its spring l2, through the medium of'the rear portion or handle I 0. A cigarette is theninserted within the channel provided by the stationary jaw and the movable jaw is then released, to allow the same to close and set up a clamping engagement against the cigarette. It will be further obvious that a partially consumed or butt portion of a cigarette, regardless of the length thereof can be readily removed from my holder, when the movable jaw is in open position.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages'and novel features of the invention willbe readily apparent.
It is to be understood that, changes maybe wardly relative to the movable jaw, aleat spring 7 having one end fixed to the handle and its remaining portion free, said spring having its free i; portion mounted in the recess for sliding movemade in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
- WhatIclaim is: j 1
A cigarette holder comprising a body, a mouthpiece formedon the body and together with the latter. having a smoke passage therethrough, a
,ment and to'urge and hold the movable jaw to and in clamping position, and an arcuate memher-secured to the strip to embrace the movable jaw and to bear against the opposite sides of the stationary jaw to hold the movable jaw when in clamping position flush with the stationary jaw.
HERMAN r'. STEBNER.
