Description

iUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EULIUS B. SHELDON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO E. B. SHELDON & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
ELECTROTYPE-MOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,224, dated June 1, 1880. Application filed January 2, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EULIUS B. SHELDON, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electrotype- Molds, of which the following is a specification.
In the drawings, which I hereby make a part of the specification, Figure l is a view of the body of the mold. Fig. 2 is a view of the body with the cores in position; and Fig. 3 is a view of an inverted core, showing the transverse slots The object of my invention is to produce 1 greater strength and lightness in the backing of electrotype-plates.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the mold, and in combining the newly-constructed mold with either one or more cores having transverse slots, as the above are hereinafter more fully set forth, and the combination claimed.
To enable others to make and use my improved mold, I will describe it and the way-in which it is used.
A, Fig. 1, is the body of the mold, consistingot the bottom plate, the side E, fastened to the bottom plate, and pieces F F, one of which is fastened to the bottom plate and 0 the other to the end of the side E, to allow a slight motion in order to clamp the side G between the end pieces, adjustable side G, and the rod D, having a thumb-nut on one end and a thread on the other, and passing 5 freely through one end piece and screwing into a threaded hole in the other, as shown in the drawings.
The core B is made in the form shown in Fig. 3. Its ends rest on the end pieces, F F,
and it is provided with the transverse slots indicated by the letter 6. The sides of the core have not much draft, the bottom, in which the slots are out, being very little narrower than the top. The edges of the square ends made by the slots in the core are beveled, as shown in Fig. 3, and thus make a solid brace at the junction of the legs with the backingplate.
To use my improved mold, the electrotype plate, its back being tinned, is placed on the bottom plate, and, the cores being arranged as shown in Fig. 2, the melted metal is poured into the space between the cores or into the space between a core and a side.
The spaces between the cores and between 5 5 a core and the sides may be varied by moving the adjustable side, the core or. cores thus making the legs of the backing of any thickness required.
The cross-pieces made. by the transverse slots in the cores give strength to the legs of the backing and allow them to be cast very thin, and thus secure strength and lightness.
The adjustable side is free to move upon the rod being unscrewed.
Having described my improved mold and the manner of using it, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The body A, consisting of the bottom plate, side E, fastened to the bottom plate, end pieces, F F, one of which is fastened to the bottom plate, one end of the other piece being fastened to the end of the side E, adjustable side G, and rod D, clamping the adjustable side between theend pieces, in combination with either one or more adjustable cores provided with the transverse slots 6, substantially as shown and set forth.
EULIUS B. SHELDON.
