UMTED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
FREDERICK O. NIMS, OF PAINESVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIG-HT TO CHESTER G. NASH, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
RAILROAD-TICKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,213, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed October 4, 1879.
To all 'whom t may concern: f
Beit known that I FREDERICK C. NIMs, of Painesville, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Combination Railroad Coupon-Ticket; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawing, which represents a face view of my improved ticket.
Io rIhe object of my invention is to furnish a coupon-ticket which may be used for the transportation of' one or more passengers from any station on the line ofthe railroad issuing the ticket to any one of a series of stations on the line of the railroad named in the final or contract coupon, with return, if required, such passage to be of any desired class; and to this end the invention consists in a railroad coupon-ticket provided with a combination of zo stations or destinations, and of classes, with check-slips attached, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the drawing, A represents the usual form of coupon-tickets for railroads, and B represents an exposed part adjoining each coupon oi' the ticket, provided with any desired number of names of stations on the line of the railroad named in the contract-coupon.
O represents an exposed part on the opposite side ot' the coupon-ticket A, adjoining each coupon thereof, provided with any number of classes, the same indicating the character of the transportation, the several arrangements of stations and classes to be alike and on line 3 5 with eachother.
The arrangement of names of stations and classes on either side or exposed part of each coupon, as indicated above, should be progressive, the station first named or nearest 4o each coupon proper to be nearest that to which the through rate from starting-point is lowest, or that in distance by rail to the initial point on the railroad named in final or contract coupon at which the passenger is delivered to that 4 5 road, and the class designated nearest to each coupon proper to be the one lowestin denomination or value of the ones named, the stations following to be arranged progressively as to through rates from starting-point or dis- 5o tance by rail, and the classes progressively as to denomination or value until the station and class shown most remote from each coupon proper shall be, respectively, ot the highest through rate from starting-point, or at the greatest distance by rail from the initial point' 55 on final railroad named, and of the highest denomination and value, sufficient space being allowed between the names of stations and between the names of classes to permit of separation with facility.
In connection with the arrangements of stations described, and apart from the outer line of saine by space suflicient for separation, is arranged a check-slip, D, of equal length with the ticket. rIhis slip'is provided opposite each 65 coupon with the name or initials of the railroad over which such coupon reads. On it is also provided the name or initials of the railroad issuing the ticket, the form, number, or des-- ignation of the ticket, and a list of the sta- 7o tions corresponding with the arrangement of stations adjoining each coupon. It may further contain instructions to ticket-agents, and
. a blank inclosed space for ticket and station numbers, to correspond with those affixed to coupons proper.
In connection with the arrangements of classes described, and apart from the outer line of same by space sufficient for separation, is arranged a check-slip, E, similar to that 8o last above described in all respects, except it shows, instead of the list of stations, a list of the classes corresponding with the arrangement of classes adjoining each coupon.
The agent or ticket-seller, in uttering the ticket, havin g m ade two line-separations,which shall leave at one edge and opposite each coupon, including contract-coupon and stub, the name ofthe station to which the ticket is to be used, and at the opposite and corresponding 9o edge the class or character of the transportation, may be required to forward to the proper officer of the company issuing the ticket, for checking purposes, the two check-slips described, with so much ofthe station and class arrangements as may remain attached after the separations, as aforesaid. As the ticket passes over the various railroads of its route t-he coupon detached by each will, with its share of the combination claimed, furnish all 10o needful information.
No claim to novelty is made on the ticket proper which may be in common use by the railways of the United States except protection for the references necessary to render my invention ei'eetive.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A railroad coupon-ticket each coupon of' Which is provided at one side with a list of stations of the terminal road ofthe route, said lists of stations heilig so arranged that a part of each can be readily eut away, so as to leave upon each coupon 'an indication of the station which is the point of destination, while the cut-away portion serves as a record of the point to which the ticket Was sold, substan tially as specified.
2. A railroad. coupon-ticket each coupon of which is provided at one side with a list of stations of the terminal road of the route, and
