Be it known that I, CHARLES M. B. SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county ofl Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Transfer-Tickets, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in transfer tickets particularly for use in connection with street railways and more particularly in what are termed time limit transfer tickets for use by street railways, traction companies etc. for transferring passengers from a car of one line to a car of another line at a given transfer point and the object thereof is to provide a transfer ticket to enable the railroad company to make the transfer as quickly as possible and keep absolute check on the conductors and passengers and by this check to be able to ascertain without question whether the transfers have been correctly issued by the conductors and' whether used by the passengers according to conditions under which they are issued or whether these conditions have been abused.
A further object of the invention is to provide a transfer ticket in a manner as hereinafter set forth whereby it can be utilized for transferring a passenger at the initial point of transfer as well as one or more subsequent points of transfer and by such arrangement provides what may be termed a duplex transfer ticket so that a single ticket can be utilized to transfer a passenger from one to two or more lines.
A further object of the invention is to provide a transfer ticket for use in connection with street railways or for other purposes wherein it is thought applicable with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth to prevent the use of a ticket issued for antemeridian being used post-meridian.
A further object of the invention, is to provide a transfer ticket for use in connection with street railways or for other purposes wherein it is found applicable with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth which when issued for use ante-meridian will be so mutilated as to prevent the antemeridian ticket being used post-meridian.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a transfer ticket which shall be comparatively simple in its construction, conveniently issued by the conductor, affording its utilization for transfer of a passenger Specication of Letters Patent.

l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel arrangement of` a transfer ticket hereinafter more specifically describedl and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a front elevation of a transfer ticket in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Referring to the drawings in detail l denotes the body portion of the ticket having at each end a coupon as at 2, 3. The front face of the body portion l is provided with means as at 4- to constitute an hour time limit. Said means consists of the numbers l to l2 and said body portion l is furthermore provided with means as at 5, 6 constituting a duplex fraction of an hour time limit. By way of example the fractions are indicated as l0, 20, 40. Each duplex fraction of an hour time limit is arranged at one end of the hour time limit. The fraction of the hour time limit V5 surrounds a pair of cardinal points 7, 8, as shown the letters N and S indicating north and south. The fraction of the hour time limit 6 surrounds a pair of cardinal points 9, l0, as shown the letters E and W indicating east and west. The outer face of the body portion 1 is also provided with means as at 11 to indicate theday upon which the transfer is issued and furthermore provided with the conductors number, as at 12, the name of the line as at 13, an inscription as at 14 designating that the hour punched in the time limit t is ante-meridian and further has an identifying number as at l5. The cardinal point 7 as well as the fraction of the hour indications which surround said cardinal point are upon a red background, the cardinal point 8 upon a green background, the cardinal point 9 has a background similar to that of the body portion and the cardinal point l0 upon a `yellow background.
The outer face of the coupon 2 is provided with an identifying number 16 which corresponds to the number 15 and is furthermore provided with means to constitute an hour time limit as at 17 said means consisting of the numbers 1 to 12, said numbers being upon a red background, the coupon 2 being what is termed the North coupon. Above the time limit 17 is a conventional means as at 18 to indicate ante-meridian, as shown the letters A. M. and below said time limit 17 is an inscription as at 19 to indicate to the passenger that the hour punched is antemeridian and further indicates to the passenger in what direction the coupon is to be used. Below the inscription 19 is means to indicate a cardinal point as at 20, said means consisting of the word North arranged upon a red background.
rIhe outer face of the coupon 3 is provided with an identifying number as at 21 which corresponds to the number 15 and is furthermore provided with means to constitute an hour time limit as at 22, said means consisting of the numbers 1 to 12, said numbers being upon a green background, the coupon 3 being what is termed the south coupon. Above the time limit 22 is a conventional means as at 23 to indicate ante-meridian, as shown the letters A. M., and below said time limit 22 is an inscription as at 24 to indicate to the passenger that the hour punched is ante-meridian and further indicates to the passenger in what direction the coupon is to used. Below the inscription 24 is means to indicate a cardinal point as at 25, said means consisting of the word South arranged upon a green background.
The rear face of the body portion 1 is provided with means to constitute an hour time limit as at 2G, said means consisting of the figures 1 to 12 and so disposed with respect to the time limit 4 that when it is punched the time limit 4 will not be mutilated and the same arrangement is had with respect to the mutilation of the time limit 4 as the time limit 26 will not be mutilated. The rear face of the body portion 1 is furthermore provided with duplicate fraction of the hom1 time limits as at 27, 28, one arranged at each end of the time limit 26. The fractions of the hour are indicated by way of example as 10, 20, 40. The duplex time limit 27 surrounds means to indicate a pair of cardinal points as at 29, 30, said means being the letters E and 'W which indicate east and west. The fraction of the hour time limit 28 surrounds means to indicate a pair of cardinal points as at 31, 32, said means consisting of the letters N and S which indicate north and south. Above the time limits 26, 27 and 28 is an inscription as at 33 which constitutes a warning to the passenger. Above the inscription 33 is means to indicate the name of the line of the railway as at 34. The rear face of the body portion 1 is furthermore provided with the conductors number as at 35 and an inscription as at 36 to indicate that the hour punched is post-meridian and further indicates in which direction the body portion is to be used.
The rear face of the coupon 2 is provided with means to constitute an hour time limit as at 37, said means consisting of figures 1 to 12. Above the time limit 37 is an inscription as at 38 to indicate that the hour punched in the time limit 37 is post-meridian and said inscription further indicates in which direction the passenger is to travel. Above the inscription 38 is means to indicate one of the cardinal points as at 39, said means consisting of the word North. Above the word North is arranged the conductors number as at 40 and a conventional means to indicate post-meridian as at 41. By way of example the said means are the letters P. M.
The rear face of the coupon 3 is provided with means to constitute an hour time limit as at 42, said means consisting of the figures 1 to 12. Above the time limit 42 is an inscription as at 43 to indicate that the hour punched in the time limit 42 is post-meridian and said inscription further indicates in which direction the passenger is to travel. Above the inscription 43, as at 44, is means to indicate one of the cardinal points, said means consisting of the word South. Above the word South is arranged the conductors number as at 45 and a conventional means to indicate post-meridian as at 46. By way of example the said means are the letters P. M.
The time limit 37 is so disposed with respect to the time limit 17 that when one is punched the other will not be mutilated and the same arrangement is had in connection with the time limit 42 with respect to the time limit 17, and further in connection with the time limits 27, 28, with respect to the time limits 5 and 6.
In addition to the disposition of the hourly time limit indicating means on the obverse and reverse faces of each coupon, cardinal point indicating means or the words North and South are in like manner in reverse position on the obverse and re verse faces of each coupon, and by thus disposing the hourly time limit and cardinal point indicating means confusion in mutilating either means to indicate north usage in one instance and south usage in another instance will not ensue with material advantages in avoiding mistakes on the part cardinal point indicating means diering i the auditor of any company in kind on their obverse faces as well as on their reverse faces.,
The front face of the body portion l is provided with conventional means as at 47 to indicate antemeridian and the rear face of the body portion is provided with-conventional means as at 48 to indicate postmeridian. The conventional means indicating ante-meridian are the letters A. -M. and that indicating post-meridian are the letters P. M.
The manner in which the ticket is used is as follows By way of example, however, it will be stated that the transfer is provided with two coupons, but this number can be increased or diminished if desired. It will be assumed that a passenger traveling north at 9.40 a. m. after paying fare will ask for a transfer ticket. The pasenger need not say to what line he desires to be transferred. On the application by the passenger for a transfer ticket the conductor will punch the igure l0 of the coupon 2, the cardinal point North as well as the ligure l() in the body portion of the ticket upon the outer face of same in time limit, also. identifying number 2 in South coupon, to indicate to that this coupon cannot be claimed by conductors as a cash fare in their favor. When the car reaches the transfer point at which the passenger is to transfer, the passenger leaves the car and boards the car on the line to which he is transferred, the conductor on this latter line takes up the ticket from the passenger and sees at a glance that the South coupon is not mutilitated in the time limit and that the rest of the ticket is properly punched. The conductor detaches the South coupon and registers the same as a fare received. It will be assumed that the car is traveling east and the conductor returning the ticket back to the passenger punches the fraction of the hour 10 which is arranged above the cardinal point E, and then hands the ticket which now consists of the body portion l and coupon Qback to the passenger. The transfer ticket having been marked North and East with time limit, the passenger cannot use the ticket to travel back in the direction which he came on the line by which the ticket was issued. Arriving at the second point of transfer, say for instance, the passenger desires to transfer to a car going north again, the conductor upon the car when the ticket is handed to him notes that the ticket has been punched at the means to indicate the cardinal points east and north and also notices that the coupon 2 is attached to the body of the ticket. The conductor detaches the coupon 2 and registers it as a fare, but before returning the body portion to the passenger he punches the fractional portion of the hour 20 or 40 as the case may be at 1 the side of the means to indicate the cardinal point North on the body of the ticket. Arriving at the third point of transfer, the passenger may now travel in a western direction if he chooses to or he may be also permitted to go in almost any direction indicated by any point of the compass over some other line of the company if it is pro vided for by the rules of the company. In this connection it will be stated that at the third point of transfer the body portion of the ticket is taken up by the conductor for passage.
It is of importance that the points of the compass, especially on coupons, be printed in colors as presented to avoid mistakes on the part of the conductor in either punching tickets or detaching coupons. It does not matter whether directions and time limits combined in the body portion when punched show an exact space on either face of the ticket as the ticket is valid only having the hours from l to l2 punched after the A. M. is passed. The only thing the conductor does is he turns over as many tickets as he thinks he will use and punches in the same manner as on the front face or anteme ridian.
The main line in some cities may run from east to west, then as a matter of course the coupons have to be designated North and South for branch or cross town lines connecting the main lines.
Conductors receiving a complete transfer ticket with all coupons attached and passengers declining to re-transfer, the conductor cannot turn in suoli a ticket to the company and claim credit for three fares in his favor instead of only one. The conductor after finishing each trip has to place the received tickets into a sealed envelop with the time marked thereon. The auditor of the company the following day looking over the time marked on each envelop and the number of trips will see by the serial number which is the same on each part of the ticket with time limit and directions marked as well as the conductors number on each of the three parts of the ticket that this conductor has made an incorrect report and will be called upon to make good two cash fares rightly belonging to the company. A conductor not having the same number corre spending to the ticket cannot issue tickets belonging to some one else, as such action on his part will be readily discovered.
What I claim is l. A transfer ticket comprising a body portion and a coupon, said body portion and coupon having their Aobverse and reverse faces provided with hourly time limit indicating means and conventional means to indicate a cardinal point, the two cardinal points indicated one upon each of the two faces of the coupon being identical, the
hourly time limit means and cardinal point indicating means being out of registration on the two faces of the coupon, one of said cardinal point indicating means on the body being similar to the said means on the coupon, and another cardinal point indicating means on the body differing from the cardinal point indicating means on the coupon, the body portion of the ticket also having ante-meridian and post-meridian indicating means thereon, and means on each face of the transfer indicating how the latter must be punched in order to be good.

A transfer ticket comprising a body portion and two separable coupons, one coupon being connected to each end thereof, said body portion and coupons each bearing on obverse and reverse sides thereof hourly time limit means and conventional indications to constitute an ante-meridian and a post-meridian transfer ticket respectively, the said hourly time limit means being in different positions on the two faces of the body portion and coupons.

A transfer ticket comprising a body portion and two coupons, the coupons being individually and separably connected to opposite ends of the body portion, said body portion and coupons each bearing on obverse and reverse faces hourly time limit means and conventional indications to constitute ante-meridian and post-meridian transfer means respectively, the obverse and reverse faces of the coupons and of the body portion of the ticket also having cardinal point indicating means on said faces of each, the cardinal point indicating means of one coupon on one face thereof differing from that on the same face of the other coupon and the cardinal point indicating means on each face of the body portion of the ticket being the same as the two differing cardinal genoss point indicating means on the correspond` ing faces of the coupons, the body portion of theticket also carrying cardinal point indicating means differing from the cardinal point indicating means on the coupons, the cardinal point indications and the hourly time limit means on the two faces of each coupon and on the body being in different positions.

A transfer ticket comprising a body portion and two coupons, the latter being separably connected one to each of the opposite ends of the body portion, said body portion and coupons each bearing on obverse and reverse sides thereof hourly time limit means and conventional indications to constitute ante-meridian and )ost-meridian transfer means, the obverse anfl reverse faces of the coupons and of the body portion of the ticket also having cardinal point indicating means on the said faces of each, the said hourly time indicating limit means and the cardinal point indicating means being in different positions on the two faces of each coupon, and the body portion of the ticket having the ante-meridian and post-meridian indicating means in different positions on the two faces thereof and the cardinal point indicating means in the same position on the two faces so that in punching anyone of the cardinal point indicating means on either face of the body portion an identical cardinal point indicating means will be likewise punched on the opposite face.
