Specification of Letters Patent.

T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, VVILLmM KLEIN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an improvement in Transferflfickets for Use on Street-Railways, of which the fole lowing is a specification.
My ticket is particularly designed and adapted for use in transferring passengers from one line of cars tcintersecting lines, and for this purpose the ticket is composed of a body or main portion, transfer and retransfer portions, having the peculiarities hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawing represents my transfer, which is a composite ticket.
A: indicates the body or main portion; B: the transfer; and C: the retransfer portions. llhese are connected with each other. ln practice the several parts A, B, C, are joined along lines e which are weakened by perforations, or otherwise in a well known manner. The part A is ruled in columns and spaces, the columns being placed parallel and longitudinally of the part A, the narrow columns being placed on each side of the broad central space or column, the smaller spaces being placed parallel to the top and bottom of the part A. In the central space or column is a dial marked with the cardinal points of the compass, to wit: North South East and West and arrows are placed in the center of the dial and point to these words as shown. rlhis dial is also surrounded by a circle within which are placed the names of certain points of a city lying in the direction of the points of the compass, opposite which they have been placed as shown. rlhese are in this instance, Greenpoint, Fulton st., East New York, East river. Also within said central space is a symbol or numeral designating the particular group or class to which the ticket belongs. The transfer and retransfer portions are similarly marked, in this instance the symbol is C2060. ln the said central space is also this legend, This transfers to cars in directions (not opposite those) punched only. ln the columns to the right and left of the said central space are placed the names of the lines to which the line on which the transfer was issued transfers, as shown in the column on the right. ln the smaller spaces at lower right and left hand corners of the body A of the ticket are arranged numerals indi eating the hours of the day-above which are the time symbols A. M. and l). hl., the numerals l-Q-WG-Sw-l() with the time symbol l. M. being inscribed in the right hand corner, and the numerals 3-5--7-9-11--12 with the time symbol A. M. in the left hand corner. In addition to the designating numeral or symbol on the transfer and retransfer, is a dial similar in essentials to that inscribed on the body A of the ticket. Each also bears the legend, Not good if detached. .ln addition to these to distinguish the transfer from the retransfer, one star is placed on the transfer and two sta-rs on the retransfer portions. ln practice also, on 'the main portion A, the following rule or legend will be inscribed: This transfer is issued for the convenience of the passenger to make one continuous journey with one of the lines intersecting with the issuing, or with one of those intersecting with the subsequent issuing lines in directions (not opposite those) punched only, the ticket will be void if not so used.
rlhe purpose o f my ticket is to enable any street railway company to carry a passenger by transfer from any one point of its lines to any other point of any other line embraced in a system, and prevent a passenger from crossing over from any one line of cars operating for instance, east or west by means of a transfer on an intersecting line operating north or south to another line operating east or west and taking a car in a reverse direction to that by which he came and ride back to his starting point for one fare. To illustrate its use, suppose a passenger take a west bound car, and after paying his fare he wishes to transfer to an intersecting line going north or south, he then receives the transfer ticket, substantially as shown in the drawing, punched west. It will be understood that the transfers of my ticket are always punched to indicate the direction in which the car was making its trip when fare was paid. We will then suppose that the passenger after receiving the transfer punched west, crosses over on a north bound car and desires to be retransferred, the conductor on the north bound car will take up the transfer portion and without further punching return the balance of the transfer to the passenger for use as a retransfer on the line operating east or west.
rfhe transfer, however, having been punched to indicate that the passenger paid his fare on a car making its trip West bound, it will be impossible for him to use it on a car making its east bound trip, and is thus prevented from making a connecting link between the line to which he has retransferred and a round trip for one single fare. it will thus be seen that by this means a passenger may be transferred as often as the rules of a company permit, by increasing the number of retransfer portions, but at no time Will it be possible for a passenger to make a round trip for one single fare.
rihere is ordinarily or practically no punching to be done While making` trips, rihe conductor may punch his pack before starting' out in the morning, t'. e., punch them south and north or east and West, according to the general direction in Which he is to make his trips that day, so there is no more punching to be done on the ticket by any other conductor Who receives it-a saving of considerable time. If a conductor receives a. transfer ticket, and a passenger asks for a second transfer, he simplytakes off the transfer portion and returns the main portion which he can use on any intersecting` line to'ivhich the lines named on the ticket transfer. if the passenger uses the ticket as a transfer only, the conductor turns in the entire ticket.
lVhat claim is:
rlhe improved street-railway transfer ticket comprising a main section having a central dial marked with the cardinal points of the compass, the names of stations or destinations being inscribed exterior to the dial and each opposite one of the points of the compass, and transfer and retransfer sections, the transfer being distinguished by a single symbol and bearing Words indicating three directions and the re-transfer distinguished by tivo symbols and bearing Words indicating tivo directions, ail the sections of the ticket being integral and having transverse lines of division indicated thereon, as described.
ln testimony whereof i have signed my name to the specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
