STREET-RAILWAY TRANSFER-TICKET.
Specification of ietters Patent. PatentedMay 21, 1912,
Application filed August 22, 1911. Serial No. 645,338.
transfer ticket set forth and described in.
United States Letters Patent No. 995,917, granted me under date of June 2 0, 1911'. In said Letters Patent the time limit for the use of an issued transfer from a main line railway to all of the transfer points of the branchlines thereof is designated on the conductor punching the transfer on the commencement of the cars run to denote the starting time thereof. However, no pro vision is made therein for designating the time limit for or the use of the transfer at re-transfer stations, in fact, at present, for re-transferring it is required that a separate transfer'ticket be given the passenger. It is this issuing of re-t-ransfer tickets which the present invention obviates, and by so doing providing a transfer'ticket not only good for the transfer stations of all branch lines connecting with the main line issuing the same, but equally so at all re-transfer points of the branch connecting lines, and by means of which the time limits for the use of the issued transfer ticket at all transfer points to branch lines and all re-transfer points of the said branch lines is indicated directly on the transfer-ticket by the conductor of the main line punching the transfer to note the time of the cars departure at the commencement of its run, and by so doing providing a transfer ticket which shall serve as a common transfer for all the transfer points of the car line issuing the same andfor use at all re-transfer points of the branch lines for which the issued ticket is a valid transfer.
By the hereinafter described transfer ticket it is only required that a single transfer be issued to a passenger as a valid transfer for any of the branch lines of the car line from which the transfer is issued and for a continuation of the ride on any of the re-transfer lines of the branch car lines for which the transfer was originally issued,
thereby providing against the necessity of the street railway company being required to maintain and issuere-transfer tickets to passengers, inasmuch as a single issued transfer ticket identifies the time limit for the use thereof by a 'passenger as a valid transfer-at all of the transfer points to branch lines and at all re-transfer points of the said branch lines.
To comprehend the invention reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of a transfer ticket designed for one of the main lines of a street railway. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the said transfer ticket.
The expression main line as hereinafter used, is employed merely to designate the car line originally issuing the transfer ticket, while the expression branch lines designates the cross lines td'which passengers are entitled to transfer from the main car line, the re-transfer lines being those to which the passenger is entitled to ride without extra charge for a continuance of the journey from the branch car lines.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 thereof, there is designated a transfer of a Hayes street line, which is one of the main lines of the street railway system. On the face of the ticket is a column A, containing the printed street names of all transfer points or branch lines for which a'transfer is issued from the Hayes street car line, and at each side of the said column a plurality of columns 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are arranged, and within these said columns, in progressive order, are printed numerals indicative of minutes, which appear respectively opposite the successive names of the transfer points, and designate the time limit in minutes after the issuance for which the transfer is good on presentation at any given transfer point. In the left hand columns 1, 2 and 3, the minute numeral indications are from 3 to 40; 13 to 50; and 23 to 570 respectively, while in the right hand columns 4, 5 and 6, the minute numeral indications are from 33 to 51; 0 to 10; 43 to 57; 1 to 20; 53 to 58; and 2 to 30 respectively. The minute indications of naught in column 3, and naught to 10 in column 4, and 1 to 20 in column 5 and 2 to 30 in column 6, are printed in red ink; the remaining numerals in each of the said columns being printed in black ink. At the head of the columns 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6, the word Minutes is 5 when punched by the conductor designate the minute time of the cars departure at the commencement of its run.
On the face and at the upper end of the ticket in black ink the numerals 12 and 1 to 11 are printed, reading from left to right and immediately beneath the same the numerals 1 to 12 in red ink. indicate respectively for acceptance the hour time limits within which the transfer must be presented and on the ticket the conventional abbreviations A. M. for antemeridian and P. M. for post-meridian are printed. At the bottom portion of the ticket is provided a space in which the months and days of the months are printed, although any Well known arrangement for designating the date as to the issuing of the transfer may be employed.
So far the described transfer ticket and its manner of use is the same as that fully set forth and described in the before mentioned Letters Patent No. 995,917, granted unto me on the 20th day of June, 1911, and further detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.
The back portion of the transfer ticket is divided intoa series of spaces 7, 8 and 9, in the present case, a space being provided for each branch line of the main line from which re-transfers are made,-these being in the illustrated ticket the Kearny, Larkin, and Fillmore street car lines, and in said spaces is printed the names of all lines to which re-transferring is granted. For an understanding as'to the working of the transfer ticket it will only be necessary to follow out the re-transferring from one line, and for this purpose the Kearny street car line will be taken as an example. Within the space 7 is printed the street name of each re-transfer line on which a person transferring from the Hayes street or main car line to the Kearny street or branch car line is entitled to re-transfer privileges for a continuation of the ride, and at the left hand side of said street column a series of parallel columns 10, 11 and 12 are arranged and at the right hand side a similar series of columns 13, l t and 15. and in said columns are printed numerals indicative of minutes as to the time limits within which the ticket must be presented for re-transfer privilege before and after a given hour. O ereach series of the said columns the word minutes is printed, and attho head of the ticket, in black ink, the numerals 12, 1 to 11 are printed, reading from right to'left, and below the said row of numerals. in red ink, the numerals 1 to 12 are printed. reading from right to left, the said arrangement. of
These numerals spect to the front of the ticket as to register with similar indications appearing thereon. The time limit indications and the arrangement of transfer points on the back of the ticket the same as the arrangement on the front of the ticket, with the exception that the transfer points on the back of the ticket designate the street lines to which re-transferring is permissible and the time limit for presentation at such re-transfer points.
The working of the invention will be readily understood by the following eX- ample, the transfer being issued by the conductor having charge of a car on the Hayes street line, which connects with all associated branch or transfer lines enumerated on the face of the ticket. We will assume the car to have commenced its run, at, say, ten minutes after eleven oclock, p. 1n. The conductor punches the numeral eleven of the hour indications at the head of the ticket, also the numeral 12 immediately below. likewise the post-meridian abbreviations P. M., and punches the minute column 2, thus designating that the car left for the commencement of its run at ten minutes after eleven oclock p. m., and that the same is good on any of the branch lines specified on the face thereof if presented within the time limit noted by the minute indications appearing in the punched column 2. A mere glance at the transfer ticket received by a passenger desiring transfer to the Kearny street car line. conveys the information that the ticket must he presented to the conductor of the Kearny street car by fifteen minutes after eleven oclock. At the same time the spaces punched by the Hayes street conductor designates on the rear face of the ticket the exact. time for presentation of the transfer ticket for the acceptance thereof on any of the associated car lines to which retransferring is allowed from the Kearny street car line, as, for instance, it must be presented for acceptance to the conductor of the Sacramento street car line not later than twenty-three minutes after eleven oclock p. m. On presentation to the Kearny street car line, the conductor determines at once if presented within time. If the passenger wishes re-transfer privileges from the Kearny street line, he retains the transfor and delivers the same to the conductor of the car line on IQ-tItIHSfPIlIDg' for a continuation of the journey; Thus on the original punching of the transfer is noted thereon the time for presentation at each of the transfer points to all branch lines of the main carline issuing the transfer, and,
likewise, the time limits for the use of the issued transfer ticket at each of the retransfer points for a continuation of the journey on associate car "lines of the branch car line. e i
The described transfer ticketis simple, ef-
- fective for the described purpose, easily understood by the traveling public, and is a common transfer ticket for all branch lines of the main line and for all associated lines ofthe branch car lines.
The arrangement ofthe time limits and the hour and minute departure indications for the car as illustrated are preferred, but any arrangement of time limits or other designations may be employed, the only requirement being thatvon the departing time of the car being noted on the transfer ticket the time limits for the use of the ticket as a valid transfer at each and every transfer point for branch car lines and re-transfer lines of the branch car lines shall appear automatically.
The minute numerals designate the minutes a er the'succeeding hour of the punched hour within which the transfer is valid for use at certain transfer points, and the hour numerals printed in 'red ink indicate the hour succeeding the punched hour indication as to the time of the cars departure. In the example given, the punched numeral '11 designates the hour time of departure, which taken in conjunction with the black printed numerals appearing in the punched minute column indicates that the transfer is valid for acceptance within certain minutes after eleven oclock. The punched numeral 12, printed in red, designates the succeeding hour of the cars departure, .and in case any of the numerals 'in the punched column of minutes are printed in red ink indicates that the trans- .fer is good and valid at such transfer points 1 within given minutes afterthe hour of twelve oclock.'
Havingthus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters'Patent is 1. A .street railway transfer comprising a body provided on one face with a plurality .of names thereon indicating in sequence the transfer points along the route of the car fprinted in red ink from which the same is issued, and on the reverse face provided with a plurality of names thereon indicating in sequence the re-transfer points along the route of a vbranch line for which the transfer is issued,
said body being also provided on each face thereof with a plurality of registering hour indications for punching to denote the hour of departure of the car, and said body on each face thereof being provided with a plurality of registering numerical indications adjacent the names of the several transfer and re-transfer points, the numerical indications opposite any such points indicating when punched in conjunction with the punched hour indication the time limit for theuse of the issued transfer at all transfer points to a branch line and for re-transferring therefrom 'to associated car lines.
2. A street railway, transfer comprisin a body provided on one face with a plurality of names thereon indicating in sequence the transfer points along the route of the car, and on the reverse face thereof with a plurality of names indicating in sequence the re-transfer points along the route of a branch line for which the transfer is issued, said body being also provided on each face thereof with a plurality of registering hour indications thereon for punching to denote the hour of departure of the car at the com-' mencement of its run, and said body being provided on each face thereof with a plurality of registering numerical indications ad'acent the names of the several transfer points, the numerical indications opposite any of such transfer points indicating when punched in conjunction with the punched hour indication the time of departure of the car, each indication adjacent the subsequent transfer points noted on each. face of the N; A.
