3 Claims.
This invention relates primarily to brushes of the fountain type, and particularly to those having a brush head and a handle projecting therefrom, the handle having a liquid storage chamber therein with a discharge passage therefrom to the principal 4portieri of the head, together with means interiorly of the handle operable by relative rotation of parts of the handle to open and close said passage.
The primary object of the invention is the provision in a brush of this character of simple, eflicient and improved means for controlling the discharge of liquid from the handle to the bristie portion of the brush, whereby to enhance the practicability and commercial value of such brushes.
A further object of the invention is the provision in combination with the valve feature of simple and efficient vent means for the liquid storage chamber which is automatically opened and closed by opening and closing movements, respectively, of the valve means.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description, and from the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a brush embodying the invention, with parts in central longitudinal section and with the valve in closed position; Fig. 2 is a similar View of the opposite side of th-e brush to that shown in Fig. 1, with the valve in open position; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; Fig, 4 is an enlarged central longitudinal section of the sleeve member, and Figs. and 6 are enlarged forward end and side views, respectively, of the valve member.
Referring to the drawing, I designates a brush head having bristles 2 projecting from its back 3, and 4 a handle projecting from one side edge of the back.
The handle 4 includes an inner discharge end part 5 forming a part of or IiXedly connected to the back 3, 6 a sleeve threaded on a rear end stud portion 'I of the part 5, and v8 a barrel or storage chamber part detachably connected to the rear end of the sleeve 6. This connection is preferably effected by internally reducing the rear end of the sleeve to form an internal rearwardly facing annular seat 9 therein, and reducing the inner end of the barrel 8 to adapt it to have threaded telescopic engagementl within the sleeve.
The discharge end part 5 has a cylindrical bore I0 axially therein which opens at its rear end into the interior of the sleeve 6 and has its forn ward end portion tapered to cause a gradual forward reduction of its diameter, with a lateral discharge orice II in the forward end of such taper. This orice is at the under or bristle side of the back 3 and in position for the discharge therefrom to enter the bristle portion of the brush.
A needle type of valve I5 is disposed in the bore I0 and has a cylindrical portion fitting the cylindrical portion of the bore and a tapered forward end portion complemental to th-e bore taper and adapted to closely seat therein. The rear end of the valve projects beyond the handle part 5, l, and is provided at such end with a radial ange IS adapted to seat on the shoulder or seat 9 in the sleeve E. The inner end of the barrel 8, when in assembled position within the sleeve (i, engages the flange I6 and holds it to its seat in the sleeve, so that the valve I5 will have fixed engagement with the sleeve and barrel to turn therewith relative to the handle part 5.
The valve I5 has a passage IT axialiy therethrough which opens at its rear end into the adjacent end of the chamber I 8 in the barrel 8 and has its forward end forming a side discharge orifice I9 in the tapered end portion of the valve. The orifice I9 may be turned by a turning of the valve in its seat into or out of register with the discharge orifice I I. It is apparent that when the valve orifice I9 is in register with the dise charge orifice II, liquid may be discharged to the bristle portion of the brush from the handle chamber I8 through the valve passage I'I, and that when the valve is turned so that said orices are out of register, a discharge of liquid from the handle chamber is prevented.
A turning of the valve into and out of liquid discharging position is eifected by a turning of the handle parts 6 and `8 relative to the part 5, and such turning may be limited preferably to substantially half a revolution of the discharge orifice I9 by the provision of a pin 20 on one or the other of the parts 5, vI5, working in and engaging the ends of a slot 2l in the other of said parts.
It is found preferable in practice to impart a slight longitudinal movement to the valve I5 in its seat during its turning from closed to open position, and vice versa. This is accomplished by providing a threaded engagement between the handle parts 5 and 6, so that during ay relative unscrewing movement of such parts to move the valve orifice I9 into register with the discharge orice Il, the valve will be given a slight rearward movement to free its tight seating engagement with the taper of the bore I0, and during a reverse relative movement of the handle parts 5 and 6 the valve will be closely seated in its bore and at the same time the orifice I9 will be moved out of register with the discharge orice Il.
For the purpose of venting the chamber I3 the sleeve 6 is provided with a pin-hole 25 in position for its inner end to be closed by the stud portion 'I of the part 5 when the valve l5 is seated and to be uncovered by said stud portion and open to the space between it and the Valve flange I6 when the sleeve 6 and barrel I8 have been turned rearward to unseat the valve and move its orifice I9 into register with the discharge orice H of the brush part 5. A pinhole 26 is also provided through the valve flange IG so as to open the space between it and the end of the stud part 'l to the inner end portion of the chamber I8. It is thus apparent that when the handle parts 6, 8 have been turned on the part 5 to unseat the valve l5 and permit a discharge of liquid from the handle, the vent from the interior of the barrel to the atmosphere is open and when the handle parts have been relatively turned to effect a seating of the valve and closing of the discharge opening said vent is closed.
We wish it understood that our invention is i not limited to any specic construction, arrangement or form of the parts as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
1. In a dispensing container of the class described, a body including a discharge end part, a rear end storage chamber part and a sleeve attached to the inner end of said rear end part for movements therewith and having rotatably threaded connection with the inner end of said discharge part, said discharge end part having a bore therein with a forwardly reducing taper at its forward end and with a side discharge orifice, a needle type valve fixedly attached at its rear end to said rear end part by said sleeve part and projecting forwardly into said bore and having its forward end tapered and fitting the bore taper, said valve having a discharge passage lengthwise therethrough forwardly from its rear end to near the forward end of its taper the rear end of said passage being in communication with the chamber in said rear end part and the forward end of said passage having a side discharge orifice for registering with said rst discharge orice when the sleeve and rear end part have been turned to one position relative to the discharge end part and being closed to said first orifice when said sleeve and rear end part have been turned to another position relative to the discharge end part.
2. In a dispensing container of the class described, a body including a forward discharge end part and a rear end part with a storage chamber therein, said forward end part having a bore therein with a forwardly reduced taper at its forward end and with a side discharge orifice from its forward end, said forward and rear end parts being threadedly connected together at their inner ends to permit a limited turning of one relative to the other, a needle type valve iixedly attached at its rear end to the inner end of said rear end part and projecting forwardly therefrom into said bore and having its forward end tapered and fitting the bore taper, said valve having a discharge passage lengthwise therethrough in communication at its rear end with the chamber in said rear end part and having a side discharge orifice at its forward end which is closed by the wall of said bore when said parts are in one `position of their relative turning movements and to register with the discharge orifice in the forward end part when said parts are in another position of their relative turning movements.
3. A dispensing container of the class described comprising a forward discharge end part, a sleeve rotatably threaded on the rear end of said discharge part, and a storage barrel telescoping with and fixed at its forward end to the rear end of said sleeve, said discharge end part having a bore therethrough forwardly from the interior of said barrel with a side discharge oriiice at its forward end, the forward end of said bore being forwardly tapered, a needle type of valve mounted in said bore and having its rear end flanged and gripped between said sleeve and the inner end of said barrel to turn therewith, said valve having a passage therethrough with its rear end in communication with the barrel chamber and with its forward end in register with said discharge orifice when the valve is in one position of its turning movement with the barrel and sleeve relative to said forward end part and is out of register therewith and closed by the wall of said bore when in another position of such turning movement, said flange having a vent passage in communication with the barrel chamber and said sleeve having a vent opening therein which is closed at its inner end by said forward end part when the sleeve is turned to valve closing position and is open to
