Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
DEXTER HENSHAW', OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLOTHES-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,804, dated February 1, 1859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEXTER HENSHAW, of Fitchburg, in the county of lorcester, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes- Frames for Drying and Airing Clothes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The Figure l in the drawing represents the frame open and ready for use.
a, a, a, fo, are four arms each of which is attached by a screw b to one of the sides of the block c-the screw b is not turned down close so as to hold the arm tight to the block but is left so loose that the arm may be moved to be at any desired angle with the side of the block and with the other arms. When the frame is in use the arms stand as represented in the drawing at an angle of about forty live degrees to each other.
d, d, (Z, Z is a cord or cords, on which the clothes are to be placed, running around the arms through the staples e, e, e, e placed in the arms at different distances from the block c.
f f are two braces which are attached at each end to opposite arms to hold them firm and steady when the frame is open. Each brace has a hinge in the middle as represented in Fig. 2 so that the brace may be doubled together when the frame is folded up.
The proper length of the arms for common use is about six and a half feet, and they should be about one inch and a half Wide and one inch thick and the block` should be about four inches long by two inches square.
The advantages of this frame are its cheapness and lightness and the compact ness with which it may be folded up and placed away when not in use.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the four arms and the block with the cords screws and braces as above described and for the purposes aforesaid.
