Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. J. ANDERSON AND N. RICHARDSON, OF ERIEV ILLE, NEW YORK.
EXTENSION-CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,635, dated February 17, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, S. J. ANDERSON and NELSON RICHARDSON, of Erieville, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Extension-Chair; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is an end view of our improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of ditto. Fig. 3, is a plan or top view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Our invent-ion consist-s in att-aching a series of jointed levers provided with legs, and also a series of folding seats to a box, and arranged as will be hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby, when necessary, the levers may be extended or drawn out from the box and the seats unfolded and placed upon them, and the box also unfolded so that a long bench is obtained, and when the long bench is not required the whole may be inclosed within the box, which may then serve as a wash-stand table or other piece of furniture.
To enable those skilled in the art t-o fully understand and construct our invention we will proceed to describe it.
A, represents an oblong rectangular box, which is divided longitudinally into two parts (a) (b) connected at one end by a hinge (c). Within the box A a series of crossed jointed levers (CZ) are placed. These levers are constructed and arranged precisely similar to those used for similar purposes. The manner in which they are jointed is clearly shown in red Fig. 3. These levers are provided with legs (e) and the outer ends of the two innermost levers (cl) (d) are connected by a bolt (f) which has a head on its upper end, said bolt tting between the upper surfaces of the two parts (a) A slot is made in the part (a) of the box A, the end opposite to that where the hinge c) is att-ached. This slot is shown by dot-ted lines in Fig. 3.
B represents a series of seats each of which is equal in length to the box A, and nearly or quite equal in width to the part (a) of the box. These seats may be constructed of boards, or they may be constructed of frames having cane, rush, or other suitable bottoms formed in them similar to chair seats. These seats are connected at their ends by hinges (7L) so that they may be folded over each other and rest upon the part (a) of the box A as shown in Figs. l and 2.
The end of the part (b) of the box A opposite to the end where the hinge (c) is attached has a door C, hinged` to it. This door covers the ends of the two parts (b) as shown in Fig. 1.
The top of the box A may be provided with a wash-stand top D, or a simple table top may be placed upon, or any other attachment may be applied to it by which the box may be rendered serviceable when not used as au extension chair.
When the levers (cl) are folded and inclosed by the box A, and the seats B folded upon it the device is very compact occupying but a small space. The device is extended in the following manner. The door C is Opened, and the levers (d) are drawn out from it till the bolt (f) fits in the slot (g), and, if the greatest length of seat is required, the part (b) of the box A is turned around in line with the part The seats B are then unfolded and placed on the levers (rl). The top D is of course removed when the device is extended.
The implement is simple, may be constructed at a moderate cost and there are no parts liable to get out of repair.
Ve do not claim the levers (d) for they have been previously used for similar or lanalogous purposes, and are well known Having thus described O-ur invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The levers (d) and folding seats B, attached to the box A as shown, the box being formed of two parts (a) (o) connected by a hinge (c) and the whole arranged as described for the purpose set forth.
