`wlmlisslis l v INVENTRS W ATTORNEY UNITED VSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL J. ANDERSON AND ALPHEUS J. TALBOT, OF CAZENOVIA, N. Y.
COMBINED BABY SWING AND CRADLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,014, dated May 25, 1880,
` Applicationllea March 20,1880. N0 moda.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SAMUEL J. ANDER- SON and A. J. TALBOT, of Gazenovia, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Baby Swings and Cradles; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to. the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my improved swing and cradle used as a swing, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of the same in cradle form.
This invention has relation to improvements in combined baby swings and cradles; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown, described, and set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, the letters A A designate two strong rectangular frames, constituting the ends of the cradle or swing, and B a lazy-tongs assemblage of slats, pivotedl at each end to framesA A and forming the sides of the device. The lazy-tongs are connected together at bottom by `means of the transverse rods C, and the end frames are connected together and to the rods or bars C by means of a flexible band, D.
As shown in Fig. 1, the rod G, near one end of the structure, is provided with a board,.a, upon its up side, whichA constitutes the bottom of the swing when the sides B are folded.
The side bars, b b', of the frames A A are provided with top and bottom offsets, rl d', which are perforated vertically for the reception of the ends of the suspension-cords C', which are passed through offset d, then through offset d', and knotted below the latter, so that they cannot be drawn through. These cords C. permit the device to be suspended from the ceiling of a room or in a doorway, being provided with rings e for this purpose.
'floor of the swing.
The top cross-bar, f, of the frames A A" has perfbrations t' in its ends, through which the cords C pass, and it is adjustable thereon vertically. The frame A has also a brace, y, pivoted to its side bar, b, and removably secured to its bar b by means of a vibrating' hook-latch, k.
When the device is used as a swing the end frames, A A', are pushed toward each other, thus folding the lazy-tongs sides B and bringing the board a over the rods G to form the The top bar, f, of frame A is then raised, the catch la disengaged from brace g, and the latterswnng upon its pivot l out of the way. This leaves one end of the swing open; and the child being placed therein, and the bars fg restored to their former positions, it is within an inclosure from which it cannot fall.
When used as a bed or cradle the frames A A are drawn away from each other as far as the band D will permit. This stretches out the lazy-tongs sides and makes room for a mattress, and the sides will be prevented from folding up by means of brace-hooks or other equivalent-s should the mattress prove insufficient.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the frames A A, lazy-tongs sides B, pivoted thereto, the rods C, connecting said frames, the seat-board a, and suspension-cords C', of the top bar, f, having perforations z' for the passage of the cords, the transverse pivoted bar g, extending across the frame A, and the hook-catch k, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL J. ANDERSON. ALPHEUS J. TALBOT.
