BRIDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,012, dated May 25, 1880.

Be it known that I, JOHN W. AIKEN, of Tennessee, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridles, of which the following is a specification.

Figure 1 is aperspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, and a cross-section of the cheekpiece. section, of the cheek-piece. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the inner side of the rosette and pulley. Fig. 5 is a side view of the rosette and pulley.

The object of this invention is to lessen the amount of stock and labor requiredin making hridles, and at the same time furnish bridles that are neat in appearance, strong, and durable.

A represents the crown-piece, B the browband, and O the throat-latch, of a bridle. D is the cheek-piece, which is made of metal, hard rubber, or other suitable material. and in tubular form. Upon the upper end of the cheek-piece D is formed a lug, E, having holes formed in it, by means of which the cheek-piece D is secured to the end of the crown-piece A by rivets or other suitable means.

When blinders are to be used the cheekpiece D has a longitudinal slot, F, formed in its forward side to receive the edge of the blinder G, and a lip or flange, H, formed upon it at the inner side of the slot F. The lip or flange H has holes formed in it to receive the rivets, by which it is secured to the blinder; or the blinder G may be secured to the cheek piece D in any convenient manner.

Fig. 3 is a front elevation, partly in I is the cheek-rein, the forward end of which is buckled into or otherwise secured to the ring of the bit J. The forward part of the checkrein [is made round, and passes through the tubular cheek-piece D, and is made enough smaller than the cavity of the said cheek-piece to play freely within it. The check-rein I passes over a pulley, K, pivoted to the rosette L, which rosette has two perforated lugs, M, formed upon it, by means of which it is secured to the crown-piece A and the browband B.

Upon the checkreiu I are placed slides N, of rubber or other suitable material, to pre vent the check-rein I, when released from the water-hook, from sliding down through the cheek-pieces D so far as to allow the bit J to escape from the horses mouth.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a bridle, the tubular cheelrpiece D, made with a slot, F, and a flange, H, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby a blinder, G, can be secured to the said cheekpiece, as set forth. 2. In a bridle, the pulley K, pivoted to a rosette, L, the said rosette having lugs M formed upon it, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the pulley can be secured to the crown-piece and the brow-band to serve as a support and guide to the cheek-rein I, as set forth.
