It is another objector the inventionto provide a safetyjguard for use with chipping hammers and the likewhich will deflect the chips or other foreignparticles downwardly, away from the work, immediately after they leave the sur face thereof, thereby eliminating the dangerof the chips piling upand obscuring the work.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the preferred embodiment of the safety guard ofmmy" invention as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, comprises a longitudinally extending inherently resilientfframe member 2 which is preferably made of spring steel oi-l any other suitable resilient sheet metal. The inner end 3 of the frame 2 is securely attached to a pliableannular member, preferably a short length of rubber hose l,by-mearis of therivet Sex in any other suitable manner. The pliable member or rubber hose 4 should have an interior diameter slightly less than the shank 6 of the working tool I with which it is tobe used asit is adapted to flt tightly therearound: Also, it is preferable that the innerend 3 of the frame 2 be disposed within the annular memberor length of rubber hose betweenfthe; same and the shank 6 of the working tooljso astoyaid in supporting the same. i There is arranged "toward the outer end of the frame 2, a relativelywide deflecting portion 8 of such width as to properly deflect the chips, or the particular substantially centrallyfthereof, a longitudinally extending opening Iii through which the workin the deflecting portion 9 of the frame 2. The wire mesh may be welded or otherwise suitably attached to the frame with the mesh of the wire being small enough to prevent the chips and other pieces of foreign particles from passing therethrough. A one-fourth inch wire mesh has been found to be satisfactory for most purposes as it permits a clear vision therethrough of the end of the working tool and the workpiece and, at the same time, properly deflects the chips so as to protect the operator. A guard of such construction is preferable for use when extremely small chips are thrown off by the working tool.
In Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing, there is' shown another modification of the safety guard of the present invention. In this construction, the frame member is made preferably of a piece of inherently resilient wire I 5 properly bent upon itself, and formed into the shape as shown in Figure 6, or in any other suitable shape. The inner ends l6 of the wire are securely attached as before to an annular pliable member preferably a length of rubber hosing Il. The ends l6 of the wire preferably extend within the length of rubber hosing between the same and the shank 6 of the working tool 1, as in the preferred embodiment, and the ends are preferably bent upwardly as at [8 so as to be disposed in holes l9 arranged through the wall of the rubber hose so as to prevent displacement of the frame.
The outer free end of the wire is bent backwardly upon itself so as to provide a relatively wide loop portion 20. There is arranged over the loop portion 20 preferably a wire mesh 2| so as to provide a deflecting shield portion on the end of the frame. The outer free end of the loop portion 20 is preferably bent outwardly and downwardly as at 22 which is adapted to rest upon the surface of the workpiece during the chipping operation.
In operation, the pliable annular member or I rubber hose 4 is slipped over the endof the working tool or chipping chisel with which the guard is to be used and properly positioned on the shank thereof so that the end of the working tool or chisel and the workpiece can be properly viewed through the opening in the same. In starting the working tool or chisel, it is usually positioned at a small angle with the vertical and in this position, the extreme outer free end of the shield, namely, the portion l3 as shown in the embodiment of Figures 1 through 4 of the drawing, and the portion 22 of.-the embodiment as shown in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing, ex-
tends a slight distance beyond the end of the cutting tool and point of cutting and will bear upon the surface of the workpiece. As the cutting operation progresses, the working tool of course is lowered and approaches the horizontal and the outer free end of the deflecting shield or guardis still maintained in contact with the surface of the workpiece due to the inherently resilient characteristics of the frame. That is,
the guard. is always maintained in its proper position over the point of cutting no matter at what angle the cutting tool is positioned, due to the resiliency of the frame. Thus, it will be seen that the chips or other foreign particles of metal strike the guard which obstructs the path with sufficient resistance to neutralize their outward force, and deflects them downwardly and outwardly, thus eliminating the same from bein deflected toward the body of the operator or towards other workmen in'the immediate vicinity of the cutting or chipping operation.
While I have shown and described an embodiment of my invention and several modifications thereof, it will be understood that these embodiments are merely for the purpose of illustration and description, and that various other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A safety guard for the use of workmen operating pneumatic chipping hammers and the like comprising a longitudinally extending inherently resilient deflecting shield member adapted to be positioned over the working tool of the hammer, a pliable annular member to which the inner end of said shield is securely attached, said annular member. adapted to fit tightly around the shank of the working tool, and an outwardly and downwardly extending portion arranged on the outer free end of said shield which is adapted to rest upon the workpiece during the working of the tool and to be held thereagainst by the resilient action of said shield member, said outwardly and downwardly extending portion being constructed and arranged sothat the same will rest upon the workpiece at a point beyond the working edge of the tool when the tool is substantially parallel to the surface of the workpiece and at all times when the tool is in use.
2. A safety guard for the use of workmen operating pneumatic chipping hammers and the like comprising a longitudinally extending inherently resilient deflecting shield member, said shield having an opening arranged therethrough in the top thereof adjacent its outer end so as to enable the workman to view the end of the working tool and the workpiece therethrough, a pliable annular rubber member to which the inner end of said shield is securely attached. said annular rubber member adapted to fit tightly around the shank of the working tool, and an outwardly and downwardly extending portion arranged on the outer free end of said shield member which is adapted to rest upon the workpiece during the working of the tool and to be held thereagainst by the resilient action of said shield member, said outwardly and downwardly extending portion being constructed and arranged so that the same will rest upon the workpiece at a point beyond the working edge of the tool when the tool is substantially parallel to the surface of the workpiece and at all times when the tool is in use.
3.
