Description

H. E. GARDNER, JR
BUSHING REMOVER AND REPLACER} Filed March 13, 1923 Patented Aug. 114 i923.
HIE/AH E. GARDNER, 33., 0F CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BUSHING REMOVEB AND REPLACER.
Application filed March 13, 1923. Serial No. 624,765.
To all whom it may comem:
Be it known that I, HIRAM E. GARDNER, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bushing Removers and Replacers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a tool for use in removing and replacing bushings of every description for wristpins, hangers and spring eyes and automobile parts requiring the replacement of worn bushings.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a tool whereby the bushing may be removed or replaced without the necessity of delivering a blow thereon which tends to upset the end receiving the blow, thereby adding materially to the difiiculty of removing or replacing the bushing.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
. While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is a sectional viewillustrative of the invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view of'difierent sized collars, and
Figure 3 is a detail view in perspective of the tool.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The tool comprises a bolt or threaded member 1 having a head 2 at one end and threaded in its length to receive a nut 3, whereby pressure is exerted to remove or replace the bushing. A collar is removably fitted on the bolt or member 1 and engages the head 2 thereof. This collar comprises stepped portions 4 and 5, the part 4 being of larger diameter than the part 5 and adapted to engage the end of the bushing 6, whereas the part enters the bushing and snugly fits the opening thereof to brace and prevent spreading or crushing of the bushing when the pressure is exerted to remove or replace the same. These collars are provided in difierent sizes, as indicated most clearly in Figure 2, whereby to adapt the tool for removing or replacing bushings of different sizes. A spacing sleeve 7 is slipped upon the threaded portion of the member 1 and engages the part 8 from which the bushin is to be removed or placed in position.
jam washer 9 is interposed between the nut 3 and the outer end of the spacing sleeve 7 the head 2 thereof, after which the member W is passed through the bushing with the part 5 of the collar entering the same and the part 4 engaging the end of the bushing. The spacing sleeve 7 is now placed upon the threaded end of the member 1 and engages the part 8 beyond the opening in which the bushing 6 is fitted. The jam washer 9 is next placed in position, after which the nut 3 is' screwed upon the projecting threaded end of the member ,1. As the nut 3 is 0 screwed upon :the member 1, the latter is moved in the opening of the part 8 receiving the bushing 6, the latter beingwithdrawn and entering the spacing sleeve 7.
When replacing the bushing, the tool is ad- 1% justed so as to draw the bushing into the opening of the part adapted to receive the same. In this use of the tool, the spacing sleeve 7 may be dispensed with and the jam washer 9 arranged to engage the part 8 at $1M the end of the opening opposite that in which the bushing is introduced to be drawn into place.
What is claimed is:
1. A tool for removing and replacing m6 bushings, the same comprising a threaded member having a head at one end, a set 001 lar removably fitted upon the threaded member and engaging the head thereof which forms a stop, the reduced part of the no collar being adapted to enter the bushing and the enlarged part to engage the end of the bushing, and a nut threaded upon the member and adapted to exert a pressure to effect an endwise movement of the bushing.
2. A tool for removing and replacing bushings, the same comprising a threaded member having a head at one end, a set collar removably fitted upon the threaded member and engaging the head thereof which forms a stop, the reduced part of the collar being adapted to enter the bushing and the enlarged part to engage the end of the bushing, a jam washer slipped upon the memberand a nut threaded upon the member and adapted to engage the jam Washer. 3. A tool for removing and replacing bushings. the same comprising a threaded member having a head at one end, a set collar removably fitted upon the threaded member and engaging the head thereof which forms a stop, the reduced part of the collar being adapted to enter the bushing and the enlarged part to engage the end of the bushing, a spacing sleeve slipped upon the member, a jam Washer engaging the outer end of the sleeve, and a nut threaded upon the member and adapted to transmit pressure to the spacing sleeve through the jam Washer.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witneses.
