Application October 16, 1940, Serial No. 361,455 l 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches.
An object of the invention is to provide a wrench which will be simple in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench which will operate equally as well on square nuts as on hexagon nuts.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench which may be operated in a ratchet wrench-like manner.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a\wrench which will be comparatively light in weight, strong and durable, reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
Still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study, of the following specication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying the invention.
i Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the invention.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view with parts broken away and shown in 'cross section.
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 5 designates a handle, constructed of any suitable metallic material, one end portion of which is fashioned to form a head 6 which is of greater thickness than the handle 5.
The vhead 6 is notched to provide a rigid jaw 1 the working face of which is opposite an arm 8 which is of reduced thickness. Arcuate shoulders 9 and I0 are formed at the base of the arm 8. The outer end portion of the arm 8 is curved, as shown at Il in Figure 3 of the drawing and has an opening I3 extending transversely therethrough. 'I'he face I3 of the head B intermediate the jaw 1 and arm 8 is at a right angle to the face of the jaw 1 for a distance and is then directed at an angle to provide a notch I4 one side of which is formed by a pivoted jaw I5.
The pivoted jaw I5 is constructed to conform with shape of the jaw 1 in order that a nut may be positioned between the jaws I5 and 1 and be turned by the same. Jaw I 5 on its side opposite its working face is gouged out to provide cheek plates I6 and I 1 which have tapered openings I8 and I9 therein. The cheek plates I6 and I1 are joined along one side edge and at one end of the pivoted jaw l5 by the web portion 20 which 55 lwise direction to turn the nut 23.
provides the Working face of the pivoted jaw I5. This web portion 20 on its surface opposite the working face 20 conforms with the configuration of the inside of the arm 8 and curves around the end thereof to provide an abutment 2| which limits the outward swing of the pivoted jaw I5 by contacting the outer surface of the arm 8, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
A pin 22 extends through the openings I2, IB and I9 and serves as a pintal for the jaw I5. The end portions of the pin 22 are swaged in the tapered openings I8 and I9 and the ends of the pin are flush with the outside surfaces of the cheek plates I6 and I1 to provide a smooth finish.
When the wrench is used to turn a nut the jaws 1 and I5 are placed about the square nut 23 as shown in Figure 1. in this position the handle 5 is swung in a clock- If a new grip on the nut is desired the handle 5 is swung in a counterclockwise direction at which time the arm 8 swings on the pin, 22 and causes the jaw 1 to swingclear of the nut, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. With the jaw 1 disengaged from the nut the jaw I5 is then slid around the nut, by manipulating the handle 6, to engage a new face on the nut 23 or 24. 'I'hen the handle 6 is again swung in a clockwise direction to further turn the nut. The wrench may be reversed to turn a left hand threaded nut.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any changes may be made in the structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A wrench including a handle, a fixed jaw at one end of said handle, said jaw having an inner gripping face and an outer gripping face each face being in a plane substantially at right angles to the other, a second inner gripping face on said xed jaw being in a plane substantially at an angle to said first-named inner gripping face `and said outer gripping face, a reduced portion on said handle to provide a fixed arm opposed to said fixed jaw, said fixed arm having an opening therethrough and further having its outer end surface in an arc substantially concentric with the opening, one side edge of said arm terminating in spaced relation to said second inner gripping jaw, a swingable jaw having an opening therethrough, a pin extending through said After placing the jaws gripping face on said web in a plane substantial- 1y at an angle to both the outer and iirst-named inner faces on said swingable jaw and intersecting said first-named second inner face on said xed jaw to provide a notch midway between said xed and swingable jaws.
