UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT SCHLUMBERGER, OF MEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
GALVAN I C BATTE RY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,448, dated May 11, 1880.
' Application filed December 22, 1879.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT SCHLUMBER- GER, of Medford, in the county f Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Batteries, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in reservoirs for electric batteries which are provided with upper reservoirs containing the operating liquid in a very concentrated or crystallized form, and with a communicating pipe through which said concentrated liquid is conducted into the battery-cup below.
The object of my invention is a more constant and uniform supply to the battery-cup than has heretofore been secured. This object I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, Which shows my improved battery in vertical central section. b
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the drawing.
A represents the battery cup; B, a zinc cathode; C, a copper anode; D, the supposed upper surface or limit of the lower concentrated liquid; E, the top surface of the lighter and refuse liquids; F and G, the conducting wires, all of which are constructed and arran ged in the ordinary manner, and require no further description.
Over the battery-cup A a suitable stand or frame, K, is placed, whereby a reservoir, H, is held suspended over the battery-cup. The said reservoir is closed up by a stopper, h, of suitable material, and into this stopper two pipes, I and J, are inserted. The reservoir is h'lled with the crystals of sulphate of copper and with liquid sulphate of copper. It is then closed by the stopper, inverted, and placed upon the frame K. The pipe I thus connects the lower parts of the reservoir and batterycup, and the pipe J the higher parts. The pipe J must be high enough to be entirely clear of the crystals in the reservoir.
During the operation of the battery the refuse liquid which is formed around the zinc cathode is gradually crowded to the center of the battery-cup by the operating liquid or sulphate of copper, and being lighter than the said operating liquid, it ascends through the pipe J and accumulates above the crystals in the reservoir. At the same time the operating liquid in the battery-cup is continually deprived of its basis, (oxide of copper,) which descends to the bottom of the battery-cup; but in the sa-me degree as this takes place the crystals in the reservoir become dissolved by the weakened portions of the operating liquid and continually recruit the -liquid below, descending through the pipe I into the range of the copper anode.
By adjusting the pipe I at a higher or lower elevation the upward current may be accelerated or retarded, and the battery made more or less powerful. A similar adjustment of the pipe J will be accompanied by the same results.
By a judicious adjustment of both pipes I and J the surfacev D may be kept at the most advantageous elevation for the uniform operation of the battery.
It will be seen that by means of the pipes I and-J the two liquids moving in opposite di-A rections are separated, and thus are prevented from interfering with each other by means of mutual friction, or by forming an intermediate bar between the reservoir and battery-cup, as has been observed in batteries with only one supply or communication pipe; and while in the batteries of old construction the ascending liquid must pass through the crystals, thereby periodically insulating the same and cutting off the supply of the battery, in my construction the pipe J conducts the said liquid above the level of the crystals and prevents all interference with the uniform supply of the battery.
I do not claim the combination of abattery,
reservoir, and communicating pipe, broadly, for reasons above indicated; but
What l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of an electric battery, a reservoir containing a supply of operating liquid, and two communicating pipes for separating the ascending and descending liquids, substantially as set forth.
2. In an electric battery with reservoir, the pipes I and J, constructed and operated as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this 14th day of December, 1879.
ROBERT SCHLUMBERGER.
In presence of- R. BOEKLEN, R. H. THOMPSON.
