SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,351, dated May 11, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERBERT ENos DEN- NETT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vials, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation Fig. 2, avertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a plan view of the bottom; Fig. 4, a vertical transverse section of the bottom; and Fig. 5, a sectional view, showing an alternate form of constructin g the throat.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

My invention is designed more especially for the use of dentists in holding the compound or liquid known as nabol'i, employed to prevent pain in excavating teeth for filling and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, by which a more eflective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.

In the drawings, A represents the body, B the bottom, and m the stopple, of the vial.

The bottom is preferably composed of glass or similar material, being provided with an annular groove around its periphery for receiving and holding a rubber ring or packing, D, and is fitted to move or slide in the body A, forming a liquid-tight follower or piston.

In place of the ordinary neck there is a cupshaped receptacle, 0, connecting with the body A by means ofthe small vertical opening or throat (I.

contents of the vial to flow slowly through the throat (I and into the cup until it contains the desired quantity, the air in the cup meantime escaping at the top from under the finger as the liquid flows in at the bottom.

The opening or throat d is preferably about one-sixteenth of an inch in diameter, the object of making it so narrow being to prevent the spunk or other absorbent used in removing the liquid contents of the cup and conveying it to the tooth from falling into the body of the vial when accidentally dropped from the tweezers or conveyor in which it is held. It also prevents the spilling of the contents of the vial to any great eXtentif the same is overturned unintentionally.

The lower end of the body A is open and made slightly flaring, as shown at a a, to enable the bottom B to be more readily inserted, and also to broaden the base and cause the vial to stand more firmly.

Where it is desirable that the vial shall not be used a second time after the contents are once exhausted, the opening or throat d is inclined, as shown in Fig. 5, thus preventing the insertion of a wire or other instrument to push down the bottom and permit the refilling of the vial.

Instead of the rubber packing-ring D, any other suitable packing may be employed; or a cork may be used instead of the bottom B and ring D, if preferred.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim isl. The improved vial described, consisting of the body A, adjustable bottom B, cup 0, and throat d, combined and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
