NECK-TIE SHIELD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,190, dated May 4, 1880.

Application filed August 5, 1878.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM H. THAYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Neck-Tie Shield, of which the following is a specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a rear view of a neck-tie shield with my improved pin attachment. Fig. 2 shows the pin attachment as applied to the lining of a neck-tie or scarf-head. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a side view and a vertical transverse section on line no a, Fig. 3, of a modified form of the pin attachment as used for scarfs of soft fabric and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pin attachment, showing construction of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention has reference to an improved pin attachment to the shields of neck-ties, scarfs, &c., in which the common pins may be employed directly without removing the head, and a strong, simple, and cheap connection of the same with the shield or,scarf obtained.

Hitherto the pins of neck-tie shields were attached,either by means of metallic fastenings or rivets that are clinched to the shield, or by shoulders that are bent into the pin and secured to holes of the shield, all these devices requiring, however, special machinery and expense for shaping and attaching the. fastening or pins.

My invention is intended to employ the common pins without any change in their shape and attach them directly to the shield; and

the invention consists of a neck-tie shield having a pin attached thereto by a fastening of stiff paper that is pasted to the shield and secured by suitable pressure to one or both sides of the shield or pin.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a neck-tie shield, to which the pin B, that retains the band of the tie or scarf, is attached by a fastening, O, of stiff paper or other suitable material.

The paper fastening or covering 0 is pasted over the pin to the shield and then exposed to In light goods the paper-fastenin gs may be doubled and pasted to both sides of the shield lining or fabric, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, and then pin and fastening exposed to pressure.

In heavy shields the shield may be split at the point where the pin is to be attached by inserting a knife-blade, and then the pin placed in position and secured by gluing the split parts again and pressing them firmly over the pin.

The same mode of fastening may also be applied to scarfneedles that are stitched onto light scarfs or ties by passing the pin through the folded edge of a doubled-up fastening, O, pasting and pressing it together, and punching, finally, the holes for the stitching, as in Figs. 3 and 4.

In place of the pin, a needle with or without holes in the shank may be used.

In either case a strong and reliable pin attachment is obtained that may be manufactured without employing special clinching machinery, and furnished at less cost than the former fastenings.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The neck-tie shield'A, having the shank and head of its pin embeddedtherein and held by stiff pasted paper, as shown and described.
