In order that our invention may be the better understood wewill, now proceed to describe the same with reference to; the; accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an ash tray constructed in accordance with an embodi-' ment of our invention;

Our improved ash tray as herein disclosed comprises a container l of desired dimensions and formed of suitable material. This container l as herein embodied is substantially cylindrical in form with its top portion open at 2. This open top portion is defined by the upstanding walls 3. One of the side walls 3 at its central part carries an exterior socket member 4 herein disclosed as of a wedge type and in which is adapted to be snugly received the bracket 5 carried by and extending beyond an end portion of the long arm 6 of a substantially L-shaped member M. The short arm I of the member M is adjacent to the bracket 5 and this short arm 1 constitutes the upper jaw for a clamp. The top closed end portions [5 provide areas upon which cigars or cigarettes may be readily placed while the opening l6 provides means in which to drop ashes into the container or to drop the stubs therethrough.

Extending transversely of the upper portion of the container l and supported by the side walls thereof are the substantially parallel shafts ll and [8. The mounting for the shaft ll maintains such shaft in a fixed position while the mounting for the shaft l8 constitutes slots l9 so that the shaft l8 may have movement toward or from the shaft I'I.

Mounted upon the shafts l1 and H! are the cylindrical members or drums 20 and 2| respectively. These members or drums 20 and 2| are provided at their opposite ends with the outstanding surrounding flanges 22, the peripheries of which are in contact so that said drums 20 and 2| may be rotated in unison but, of course, in reverse directions. These flanges 22, as herein disclosed, have their peripheries roughened or serrated as at 23 to assure effective driving engagement between the members or drums 20 and 2|.

The member or drum 2| is freely mounted on its shaft l8 and the extremities of the shaft l8 extend outwardly beyond the side walls of the container I. These side walls of the container I adjacent to the shaft I 8 are provided with the outstanding brackets 24. Interposed between these brackets 24 and the extended end portions of the shaft I8 are the expansible springs 25 which serve to constantly urge the drum 2| toward the member or drum 20 to maintain the same in driving engagement one with the other. However, these springs 25 will sufliciently yield to allow the member or drum 2| to move away from the member or drum 2!] to permit the passage therebetween of a stub of a cigar or cigarette but with such stub under certain pressure to assure the extinguishing of any burning part of the stub. The member or drum 20 rotates with its shaft I! and this shaft I! has a portion extending beyond a side of the container l and to which extended portion is fixed an operating wheel 26. This wheel has extending outwardly from its periphery at points spaced circumferentially therearound the nubs or lugs 21 to facilitatethe desired rotation of the wheel 26.

The peripheries of the members or drums 20 and 2| between the flanges 22 thereof are provided with the circumferentially spaced grooves or channels 28.

Depending from the inner ends of the closed top portions 15 and extending downward in convergence toward the members or drums 20 and 2| are the plates 29. These plates 29 have their lower ends terminating closely adjacent to these members or drums 20 and 2| at opposite sides of the bight thereof and between the flanges 22. As illustrated in Figure 4, the walls 3 are provided with the inwardly disposed flanges 30 which extend across the opening 16. These flanges 30 provide additional area upon which a cigar or cigarette may be supported and prefv sidewall adjacent to the opening 3[ while the lower portion of the door 32 carries a swinging latch 34 which tightly engages the bottom wall of the container.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an ash tray constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

We claim:

An ash tray comprising a container having an opening in its top, marginal portions defining such opening providing supporting areas for cigars or cigarettes, drums rotatably mounted within the container in the upper portion thereof, one of said drums being movable toward or from the other, means coacting with said movable drum for normally maintaining the same in driving engagement with the second drum, means exteriorly of the container for rotating the second drum, the bight between the drums being below the opening in the top of the container, the end portions of the drums being provided with outstanding surrounding flanges, the flanges of one drum having direct contact with the flanges of the second drum, the peripheries of the drums between the flanges being free of contact, and plates depending from the top of the container at opposite sides of the bight between the drums and substantially bridging the spaces between the top of the container and the peripheries of the drums, said plates also extending between the flanges of the 'drums.
