[This invention relates to apparatus forcovering. cores,'and more particularly to apparatus for applyingmetal tape spirally'to continuous cores, such as electric cables or the like.
Objects of the invention are to provide, in'an apparatus of the aforementioned type; a simple;
the said brake mechanism being constructed and arranged sojthat its braking action diminishes as the diameter of the tape supply roll decreases.

The serving head illustrated in the drawing comprisesa rotary flier Ill consisting of a circular plate H having 'a concentric tubular hub l2 on one side thereof upon which a tape supply holder 14 is rotatably mounted. On its opposite side, thecircular plate is provided with two diametrically opposed earsor lugs l5---l5, by means of which it is attached by a yoke IE to a tubular driving-shaft 'journalled in a suitable supporting' frame or standard I8, a portion of which is shown-in Fig.1 i J l "Thtape'supply holder comprises a circular plate having a concentric tubular hub 2|, which is rotatable-on the hub l2 of the flier. -A retaining-collar 23 is attached to the end of the hub l2 to prevent axial displacement of the tape supply holder. This holder is adapted to hold a pad or roll25 of metal tape 26. The roll of tape is placed'upon the hub 2| of the holder and its tubular core'is clamped against the plate 23 of the holder by means of a cylindrical retaining nut 28-threaded on' the hub. The retaining nut has 1' an: outwardly extending circumferential fiange'29, to which a series of radial arms 30, 30 are welded; which serve to holdthe tape supply roll against the plate 20 as the tape is withdrawn from the roll.-' It is obvious, of course, that any other suitable means may be provided for holding the roll of tape on the tape supply holder.
Within the hub I2 of the flier l6, there is secured a tube 3!, to which two diametrically op posed parallel rods 32-32 are attached. These rods support a sizing die holder 33, which is equipped with a sizing die 34. One of the rods also supports a tape guiding member 35, by means of which the tape is applied to a core or cable 31 at the desired angle as the cable is advanced through the rotating flier in the direction indicated by the arrow 38 inFig; l. The tapeis guided from the supply roll to the-guide by two flanged rollers 39 and 4B.
Secured to or formed integral with the tape supply roll holder [4 is a concentric brake drum 42, which is frictionally engaged by a brake shoe 43, asbest shown in Fig. 2. The brake shoeis pivotallycarried by an arm 44-keyed to a tubular shaft 45 (Fig. l) which is rotatably journalled in a bearing 45 fixed to-the' flier I5 near its periphery. A shaft 48 is rotatably journalled interme-- diate its ends in the tubular shaft 45, and an arm '5flis attached' at one end to one end 'of the. shaft; 48 and-carrie a roller 5|- at its opposite end." This roller is adapted'to-ride on the periphery'otthe roll of tape; as best shown in Fig. 2.. The roller is pressed against the tape roll and'the brake slgroe-is pressed against the brakeldrum by atorsionfsprin g52 (Fig.2) which is adjustable:

45. Ratchet disk 56 is thus pressed into interlocking engagement with ratchet disk 53, and since the latter is keyed to inner shaft 48, this shaft and roller carrying arm 56 are constrained to rotate with ratchet disk 56.
One end of torsion spring 52 'is attached to ratchet disk 56 and its opposite end is attached to flange 59 of tubular shaft 45. The spring .is tensioned so-that it presses brake shoe 43 against brake drum 42 and also presses the roller 5| against the periphery of the tape supply roll. The braking pressure exerted by the spring may be adjusted by simply turning ratchet disk 5t" relative to ratchet disk 53.
In the operation of the apparatus, the serving head is rotated around the advancing cable in the direction indicated by the arrow 60 in Fig. 2. The tape is thus drawn from the supply roll and spirally wrapped around the cable. At the beginning of the rotation of the serving head, theinitial braking pressure exerted by the spring pressed brake shoe 43 on the brake drum 42 is suflicient to overcome the inertia of the tape supply roll and cause it to start rotating with the flyer I9. Due to the action of centrifugal force on the brake shoe, the braking pressure exerted by the brake shoe on the brake drum decreases as the speed of; rotation of the serving head: increases. As the diameter of the tape supply roll decreases, the roller carrying arm 50 moves toward the axis of the serving head, as illustrated in broken line in Fig. 2. or reduces the tension of the torsion spring 52,
thereby reducing the braking-pressure exertedbyi the brake shoe on the brake drum. Thus, the
braking pressure decreases as the tape upply roll decreases in size, and since, as. pointed-out above; the braking pressure also decreases as the speed of rotation of the taping head increases, the tapeis, applied to cable at a uniform tension. at all times;
