Description
Dec. l, 15941. M. :ol.,ucc|v CIGARETTE MAKING DEVIQE Filed July 29, 1939 ATTORNEY.
Patented Dec. 16, 1941 UNHTED STATES ATE "i" OFFICE This invention relates to pencil-size cigarette making devices which can be carried removably attached to ones clothing.
One of the objects is to provide a device which mechanically shapes and rolls a cigarette by removably locking the cigarette paper in the device and providing cooperative relatively turnable tubular means for shaping the paper and holding the tobacco therewithin and having means for ejecting the manufactured cigarette.
Other objects are to provide means in such a device for packing or ramming the tobacco into the ends of the formed cigarette; to provide means in such a device for removably clasping the device to a persons clothing; to provide a door entry to the interior for entry of cigarette. paper, tobacco and moistening means to seal. the cigarette paper.
Still another object is to provide such a device with means for permanently or removably mounting same in a cigarette case.
These and other objects are accomplished as explained in the following description and accompanying drawing forming part thereof.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal plan View of the device showing the door open and the forward ram plug removed from the device.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing a piece of cigarette paper inserted in the paper slots of the inner turnable tube.
Fig. 3 is a cross section view taken on line 3 3 f Fig. l, but showing the paper having an end now folded over the slotted arm portion of the inner tube and showing tobacco in the paper and the free end of the paper extending thru the door and outside the device, the paper and inner tube having been moved from the position of Fig. 2, to that of Fig. 3, the inner tube having been turned in the direction of curved arrow of Fig. 3, by means of its end knob.
Fig. 4 is a cross section view taken on line 4--5 of Fig. 1, showing the paper now turned completely around the tobacco after having its free u glue containing end moistened and pressed down on the lower portion of curled paper, the inner tube having been turned in the direction of curved arrow of Fig. 4.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section View of the device showing the right ram rod bearing against one end of the completed cigarette, the cigarette having been partly ejected from the device.
Fig. 6 shows a pencil stub mounted in the lefthand ram.
Fig. Z is a perspective view member I5.
An outer tube I G, has a door hinged thereon at I2 providing a closure for doorway I3. Said door hinge may be spring actuated as by member III tending to normally close the door. At the right end II of tube I0, an inner and slotted tube I4, is turnably mounted being held in position by means of split tube spring member I5 or the like means said spring normally exing against the inner surface of the outer tube. A threaded end I6 is. provided to cooperate with similar threads on inner portion of knob I8. A bushing `I9 slidably mounts rod 2|]y having handle 2| and long ram. 22at opposite ends. Member 2l has threads 3| which cooperate with threads I 'I- to removably lock thev ram rod with the knob when the parts are inoperative. The inner tube has a longitudinal segment Ici thereof removedto provide for passagewayk P for a of split tube spring length of cigarette paper 23V and preferablyv long fine grain cut tobacco T therethrough. (See top of inner tube at Fig. 3.) A longitudinal slot 25 which may be slightly longer than a length of cigarette paper, is provided in the inner tube. There is thus provided on said inner tube a transverse arcuate longitudinal arm 26, having a narrow slot 25 at one of its sides and a substantial space or wide slot, providing a passageway P, at its other side.
The left end I 02 of said tube may receive therein slidably fitting ram 21, removably fastened to member I0 by means of chain 28 or the like. A pencil 29 or the like may be removably and reversably mounted in member 21 so that unpointed end 29| acts as a ram and pointed lead end 292 acts as a pencil (see Fig. 6).
A clasp 3| having sleeve 3| I, similar to a fountain-pen clasp, provides means for clasping the device to the clothing of a person. Said clasp is turnably mounted on the outer tube and may be turned to suitably hold the door II in closed position in the embodiment in which member I| has no spring normally closing said member.
In operation to make a cigarette the arm 26 is registered with the doorway I3 and paper 23 is placed in slot 25 (see Fig. 2). The arm 26 thru the medium of knob I8, is then turned in the direction of curved arrow of Fig. 2, and end 23| of paper is folded down into the inner tube and against the inner side of arm 26. The inner tubes wide slot P is now registered with doorway I3 of outer tube providing passageway for tobacco T therethru which on being pressed into the tube I4 causes paper 23 to take the shape of the inner wall of the tube. The inner tube is then turned in direction of curved arrow of Fig. 4, and the paper is seen to wind itself around the tobacco and to form a lap as seen at top of member 25, Fig. 4. The glue-containing end surface of the paper is moistened and then glued to lower portion of the paper. The cigarette now formed is then tamped at its ends by means of rams 22, 29|. Member 21 is then removed from outer tube and the cigarettefnow completely made, is pushed to the left and out of the device by means of long ram 22 attached to rod 2U.
Parts may be used without others. The disclosure is intended to be illustrative rather than limitative.
