1 Claim.
This invention relates lto improvements vin steam 4or electric powered hoists or cargo Winches particularly adapted for use 'on shipboardfand is a substitute for application SerialNo. l252,370., filed January 23,. 1939, which 'became :abandoned May 15, 1940. The principal object ofthe invention is to provide a hoist of this character 'in which two or more drums are used, one `for hoisting or lowering the cargo boom 'and the other for the cargo fall, also the provision of safe 'and ecient means for hoisting or lowering the cargo boom and for maintaining it in any of its adjusted positions.
In hoists now common 'aboard ship only one drum, namely the cargo fall drum, is employed and it must serve the double purpose of first positioning the boom to any desired position and then to raise or Alower the cargo vby means of the usual hoisting cable. In order to .use the single drum for 'hoisting Yor lowering, or votherwise posi tioning the cargo boom, it is necessary to rst remove the cargo cable from the drum and then attach to the drum, or gypsy, the cable that controls or operates the cargo boom. After the boom is positioned the cable is removed from the drum or gypsy and then secured to a mast or other point of anchorage by any suitable means. This old method is unsafe and consumes considerable amount of time on the part of the workmen.
With my new and improved type of multi-drum hoist I overcome the foregoing objectionable and dangerous features by providing a secondary or supplemental drum adapted to be selectively operated independent of the main drum, and also providing means for locking the secondary drum to maintain the cargo boom in any operative position. I also provide means for securely lockingthe secondary drum to prevent its reverse rotation in a boom-lowering direction.
These and other objects will appear as myinvention is more fully hereinafter described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mast, a cargo boom swingably mounted to the mast, and my new and improved hoist in operative connection with said mast and boom.
Figure 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the hoist.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view of a safety means in the form of a pawl and ratchet associated with the secondary drum.
Referringv 'now more particularly to the drawing:
Reference 'numeral I indicates the -base jof the hoist to which are mounted two companion steam engines 2 'and 3, supplied with steam from any convenient source Aof supply and controlled by V4a throttle valve 4, by means of la throttle larm -5. The connecting rod 6 -of v'the engine 2 connects as at "I with 'a crank 8 secured to one `end Aof ya drive shaft 9. To the opposite end.- of the drive shaft vis 'secured a crank 'IIl which is operatively connected with 'theconnectingrod ^I`I l'of the vengine 3. Thus. -asthe engines are oper-ated 'the shaft-'9 will be'caused torotate. Slidably'mounteid upon the shaft 9, but engaged for 'rotation therewith by meanso'f a'key or a square lon 'the shaft I2,'are driving gears I3 and I'd. The gears lare spaced apart and 'united with each other for rotation as a unit 'by means `of Aa sleeve I-5, 'also slidable 'on the shaft '9, but rotatable therewith by means -o'f vthe key 'I2 `-ora square on the shaft. Any suitable form of yoke I6 embraces the collar I5, and is adapted to slide or shift the same laterally on the shaft 9 by any suitable form of handle I1 extending upwardly from the yoke.
Mounted upon the base I, in suitable bearings I8 and I9, is a main drum 2l), provided at one of its ends with a gear 2I which meshes with the driving gear I4. The gear I4 is slidable transversely with respect to the gear 2|. Also mounted upon the base in suitable bearings, 22, is a secondary drum 23, provided at one of its engagement with the driving gear I3. The opends with a driven gear 24, adapted for selective posite end of the drum 23 is formed with a braking surface or brake drum 25, embraced by a brake band 26, which is operable by a hand wheel or any other suitable leverage means 2l whereby the brake band may be applied to or released from the brake drum. On the outside of the brake drum is a ratchet wheel 28 adapted for engagement with a pawl 29, which may be secured to any fixed member of the machine. In
, Figure 3 I have illustrated the pawl as being carried by an arm 30, secured to the bearing 22.
Operation suitable type of hook or other cargo engaging means 31. l
One end of`a topping lift 38 is secured as at 39 or near the outermost end of the boom 33. The topping lift extends over a sheave 40 at or near the top of a mast 4I and extends down along the mast and through a clamping means 42. The end of the topping lift below the clamping means passes through a lead block 42A and is permanently secured on the secondary drum 23.
When it becomesl necessary` to 4raise the cargo boom into an operative position as shown in dotted lines, the clutch lever I1 is placed in such av A position that pinion I3 engages gear 24 and at I the same time disengages pinion I4, which is a part of the sleeve I5, from the driven 1gear 2| of the main drum 2D. The clamping gear`42 is then released, engines 2 and` 3 are set in. motion,
under control of the engines 2 and 3. In the event of steam not being available, the boom may be lowered under control of the brake 25. In the absence of the brake 25, the drum 23 under the pulling load of the cable would, of course, freely rotate with a resultant abrupt dropping of the boom. But by applying the brake to the drum at the same time the boom reaches its operative position, the drum is prevented from reverse rotation upon release of the Apawl 29 While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themrevolving the topping lift drum.23 andfallowing the cargo drum to remain free. Such rotation,
of course, causes the cable 38 to wind around the drum with a resultant lifting of the boom 33. When the boom has reached its operative or loading position, the pawl 29 having engaged with one of the teeth of the ratchet wheel' 28, prevents ja reverse rotation'of the drum 23, or the unwinding of the cable therefrom. Following this, the brake handle'Z'I is actuated to apply the brake 26 to the drum to further prevent any accidental reverse rotation of the drum. The clamping device 42. is secured, andthe clutch lever is then shifted to disengage the topping lift drum gear I3, from gear 24 and to engage gear I4 with gear 2I on the main drum 20. The winch is then prepared to handle cargo in the usual way. After the loading operation is finished and the main drum 20 ceases to operate and it becomes desirable to lower the boom 33into an idle position, the topping lift drum is again engaged by shifting the clutch lever I 1, as described above, the pawl 29 and the clamping device 42 are manually disengaged, the brake 25 is slacked 01T and the boom 33 is lowered to rest selves' to others skilled in the art without departingfrom the spirit and scope of the invention.V v Having thus described the invention, what 'Y I claim as-:new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
In a hoisting apparatus, including a mast, a cargo boom swin-gably mounted with respect thereto, a topping lift cable for actuating v"said boom, and a winch fall associated with said boom; a main drum having one end of said winch fall attached thereto, a secondary drum in spaced parallel relation to said main drum and having one end of said topping lift connected thereto, a driven gear xed to one end of said main drum and a driven gear fixed to the opposite end of said secondary drum, a drive shaft between said drums and parallel thereto, a unitary driving gear meansfor both of said drums, said unitary gear meansbeing longitudinally slidably mounted on said shaft and rotatable therewith, means for selectively moving said gear means out of engagement with one of said gears and into engagement with the other and vice-versa to separately actuate said drums, and means for rotating said shaft.
