Special objects of the invention areto uti-" lize the best features of rotary drilling methods, combined withthe advantages of pressure feed and to efl'ect this with relatively simple, powerful, readily transportable apparatus, constructed so that it maybe handled substantially as a sin le unit. Other special objects 0 the invention are 'to combine the diiferent units of the appara-- tus in acompact, well balanced structure with the several parts located for their most handy and efli'cient control. and operation, to provide full accessibility for careor removal of the different portions of the apparatus, to provide full flexibilit and varlable speed control particularly 0 the rotary table and hoist mechanism, and in general, to provide a machine of this nature which will be practicalin every way for thepurposes intended. The many novel features of construction,- combinations and relations of parts by which the foregoing and other objects are attained will appear as the specification proceeds.
In the drawings forming part of this specification and to which attention is nowinvlted, some of the numerousv possible embodiments of the invention are illustrated and it is to be understood that other structural modifications and changes may be made without departure from the broad spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed. Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine as mounted on parallel beams laid on the transverse beams of a steel derrickfloor.

One of the special features of the invention is the mounting of the various units 'of'the machine, all on a sled like base or frame, made i up of two side sills Lconnected at intervals by crossbraces 2. These sills and cross braces may be I-beams, the cross braces of less depth than the sills (Figure 5), the lower flanges of the sills serving as flat runners and being 5 shownas turned up at the ends at 3 after the manner of 'sled runners.

Interposed in this shafting l are shown, in the order named, a chain uniigures 1 and versal coupling 11, a main clutch 12 controlled by lever 13, a coupling 14, a rotary table clutch 15 controlled by lever 16 and a coupling 17. The rotary clutch being interposed between the two couplings 14, 17 makes it possible to remove this clutch when necessar without disturbing other parts.

The support for the table is shown as a relatively massive flat and substantially s uare base plate 21 secured by bolts 22 on top of the frame at the end opposite the motor or transmission gearing and carrying a dependent sleeve 23 to serve as a long rlgid bearin for the table.

To drive th1s drum at different speeds, a low speed and a high speed clutch are provided driven from the main shaft and connected to the drum by uitable gearing.
The low speed and-high speed clutches are indicated respectively at 44, 45 in Figures 2, 4 and 5, the low speed clutch in Figure 4 being indicated as of the positive jaw type having interengaging driving and driven jaws 46, 47 and t e high speed clutch being shown "as of the frictional type having engaging clutch plates 48. The teeth of the jaw clutc are shown as having inclined faces 49 adapted to ride over each other to positively disengage this cluteh when the high speed friction clutch takes hold.
These clutches are shown mounted on shafts 50 supported at their inner ends in sockets 51 in the sides of the main shaft bearing 52 and rigidly secured at their outer ends by set screws 53 in brackets 54. This construction enables either one of the clutches being dropped by simply withdrawing the shaft 50 which su ports it.

Different forms of gearing may be employed for effecting the drive of the drum from the two different speed clutches. Thus in Figures 1, 2 and 5, the driven members .of the clutchesare shownas carrying surrounding spur gears 74, 7 5' for engagement, the first, with a ring gear 76 carried by a member 77 r0- tatable on the drum shaft and the second engaging a ring gear 78 directly attached to the drum.
In Figure 4 the driven element of the first or low speed clutch is shown as carrying a sprocket pinion 7 9 over which passes a sprocket chain 80 engaging a sprocket gear 81 on the rotatable gearelement 77 and the driven element of the second or high speed clutch is shown as carrying a sprocket pinion 82 over which passes a chain 83 engaging a sprocket gear 84 directly attached to the rim of the drum.

For high speed operation of the drum, such as for repairing the empty block or for lifting out a light line of pipe, the drum may be driven directly from'the cat head shaft by providing a gear on that shaft in-mesh with the gear on the drum and clutch means such as an ordinary jaw clutch operable to couple this extra gear to the cat head shaft, it being understood that when this drive from the cat head shaft is being used, both the lower drum drive clutches will be disengaged.
What is claimed is:
1. Well drilling apparatus comprising line shafting carrying oppositely faced bevel gears, evel gears of different diameters driven at different speeds but in the same direction by said first named gears, different speed clutches operated by the driven bevel gears, hoist mechanism, gearing connecting said clutches with said hoist mechanism and means for arbitrarily controlling the differ-' ent s eed clutches.

In well drilling apparatus, a hoist drum, a drive shaft, bevel pinions arranged in opposed spaced relation on said drive shaft, bevel gears of different sizes engaged with said pinions and driven thereby in the same direction but at different speeds and gearing from said different speed bevel gears 4. 6. In apparatus of the character disclosed, a drive shaft, sections of shafting disposed at right angles thereto, clutches mounted on said sections, gearing for driving said clutches from the drive shaft in the same direction but at different speeds and hoistmechanism operated by said different speed clutches.
7. In apparatus of the character disclosed, a drive shaft, a bearing therefor, supporting shafts at right angles to said drive shaft and supported by the opposite sides of said bear-, ing, clutches on said side shafts, gearing for driving said clutches from the drive shaft at different speeds and hoist mechanism operable from said clutches.
8. In apparatus of the character disclosed, a drive shaft, a main bearing through which the drive shaft extends, supporting seats at opposite sides of said main bearing, supporting brackets in line with said seats, shaft sections rigidly held in said brackets and supported at their inner ends by the seats of the main bearing, gears on said side shafts, hoist mechanism operated by said gears, opposed bevel gears on the drive shaft at opposite sides of the main bearing and bevel gears on the side shafts and in mesh with the bevel gears on the drive shaft.
9. In apparatus of the character disclosed, a drive shaft, a main bearing through which the drive shaft extends, supporting seats at opposite sides of said main bearing, supporting brackets in line with said seats, shaft sections rigidly held in said brackets and supported at their inner ends by the seats of the main bearing, gears on said side shafts, hoist mechanism operated by said gears, opposed bevel gears on the drive shaft at opposite sides of the main bearing, bevel gears on the side shafts and in mesh with the bevel gears on the drive shaft and independently controlled clutches on the side shafts providing couplings between the bevel gears and, hoist drivin gears thereon. In apparatus of the character disclosed, a drive shaft, cross shafts at opposite sides of said drive shaft and angularly related thereto, bevel inions on the. drive shaft faced toward eac other and disposed at opposite sides of the axes of the crossshafts, a hoisting drum over the cross shafts, earsjcarried by the heads of said hoisting rum, bevel gears sup-ported by the, cross shafts each in engagement with one of the bevel pinions on the drive shaft and drive gearin for operating the drum from either of the evel gears on the cross shafts and including independently operableclutches on jaws arrange for the cross shafts, and gears operated by said clutches in mesh with the gears at the heads of the hoistin drum. 1

In com ination, a hoisting drum, a shaft journaled eccentrically in said drum and extending between the heads of said drum, pinions on the ends of said shaft, a drive pinion concentrically related to the drum and in mesh with the pinion on one end of the shaft aforesaid, a ring gear concentrically related to the drum and engaged by the pinion on the opposite end of said shaft, a brake for holding said ring gear and means for driving the drum independently of the gearing described and including a gear surrounding the ring gear but directly connected with the adfiiacent head of the drum.

In combination, a hoisting drum, a shaft journaled eccentrically in said drum and extending between the heads of said drum, pinions on the ends of said-shaft, a drive pinion concentrically related to the drum and'in mesh with the pinion .on one end of the shaft aforesaid, a ring gear concentrically related tothe drum and engaged by the pinion on the opposite end of said shaft, a brake for holding said ring gear, means for driving the drum independently of the gearing described and including a gear surrounding the ring gear but directly connected with the adjacent head of the drum and means for operating the concentric drive pinion, including a gear concentrically related to the opposite head of the drum.

In combination, a hoisting drum, a shaft journaled eccentrically in said drum and extending between the heads of said drum, pinions on the ends of said shaft, a drive pinion concentrically related to the drum and in mesh with the pinion on one end of the shaft aforesaid, a ring gear concentrically related to the drum and engaged by the pinion on the opposite end of said shaft, a brake for holding said ring gear, means -'for driving the drum independently of the gearing described and including a gear surrounding the ring gear but directly connected with the adjacent head of the drum, means for operating the concentric drive pinion, including a gear concentrically related to the opposite head of the drum and a brake for said last mentioned gear.

In hoisting mechanism, a drum, means for driving said drum at one speed and means for effecting the drive of said drum at a different speed, including a ring gear concentrically arranged at one end of the drum, a pinion journaled eccentrically in the drum in mesh with said ring gear, a concentrically arranged gear for operating said eccentrically mounted pinion and means for releasably holding the ring gear against rotation and including a frictional brake for holding the ring gear for short periods and a positive lock for securing the ring gear for longer periods. 1

In hoisting mechanism, a drum, means for driving said drum at one speed and means for eifecting the drive of said drum at a different speed, including a ring gear concentrically arranged at one end of the drum, a pinion journaled eccentrically in the drum in mesh with said ring gear, a concentrically arranged gear for operating said eccentrical- 1y mounted pinion and means for releasably holding the. ring gear against rotation and including a stop sbiftable into holding rela tion with respect to the ring gear'and a brake operative tohold the ring gear when the stop is withdrawn.

In hoist mechanism, a hoistingdrum, gearing for directly rotating the same, gearing for indirectly rotating the drum, including a gear concentrically arranged at one end of the drum, a cat head shaft parallel to the axis of the drum, a gear on said cat head shaft for engagement with said indirect drive gear, means for controlling the drive relation between said indirect drum drive gear and said cat head shaft gear and means for holding the drum against rotation when said 'cat head drive is effective.

In hoist mechanism, a hoisting drum, a hi h speed drive for said drum, a low speed drive for said drum including a concentrically disposed gear at one end of the drum and rotatable independently of the same, a cat head-shaft adjacent said drum, gearing operable at will to drive said cat head shaft from said low speed drum driving gear and means operable at will to hold the drum against rotation or topermit rotation of the same when the cat head shaft is being driven.
30. A hoisting drum having end heads, concentric drive gears at the'outer sides of said end heads, brake rings at the outer sides of said gears, independently operable brake bands for said brake rings, selectively operable gearing in mesh with the gears at the heads of the drum, connections of different speed ratios between said gears and the drum, brake rings on the drum heads at the inner sides of the gears and brake bands operable on said drum head brake rings.

In combination, a hoisting drum having end heads, shafting beneath said hoisting drum substantially parallel with the axis of the drum, bevel gears on said shafting oppositely faced and arranged below the drum in line with the space between said end heads, op'posed bevel pinions on an axis at right angles to the shafting, disposed between said bevel gears and in mesh therewith and drive gearing below the drum extending from said bevel gears to the drum and including gear connections onthe shafting substantially in line with the end heads of the drum.
32. Hoist mechanism comprising in combination a mounting frame, drive means mounted at one end of said frame, a hoisting drum mounted on the frame adjacent said drive means, gearing for operating said drum including drive shafting journalled on the frame and extending from the drive means beneath and beyond the hoisting drum, coup'lings in the portion of said drive shafting extending beyond the drum, a clutch in the drive shafting between said couplings and controlling operation of the shafting extending beyond the hoisting drum, and said couplings enabling said clutch to be dro liOped from the drive shafting without distur ing other parts of the hoist.
