Description

c. E. FRI EL LEDGER BINDER Nov. 25, 1941.
Filed June 1'7, 1940 QI'WW Charles 1.7. F'rz'el Patented Nov. 25, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LEDGER BINDER Charles E. Friel, Tulsa, Okla.
Application June 17, 1940, Serial No. 341,068
4 Claims.
This invention relates to books and ledgers and more particularly to loose leaf ledgers.
Th primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a loose leaf binder adapted to retain the leaves thereon in flat position when turning the cover thereof to open position.
Another object of this invention resides in the particularly constructed elements connecting the cover of the binder to the back thereof.
With these and other objects in view this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanied drawing and pointed out in the appended claims and, while the disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved-to resort to such changes in construction and arrangement of elements as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Fig. l is a side View of the binder showing the cover thereof closed in full lines and open and partly closed by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the lugs.
Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the hinge-links.
Fig. 6 is a fragmental side view of a modified form of the binder. i
In the present illustration of this invention the numeral 5 designates, in general, a loose leaf binder consisting of a back 6 to which is removably attached as by screws 1 or the like a clampplate 8 having apertured lugs 9 preferably secured thereto at its opposite ends, said clampplate, through th instrumentality of the aforesaid screws, removably retain book leaves or the like L on the back in flat position.
Associated with the back 6 is a cover ID of an area approximately equal to that of the back and having secured thereto adjacent its inner end apertured lugs II which together with the lugs 9 and substantially U-shape links l2 hingedly connect the cover to the clamp-plate so it can be swung to open position without disturbing the flat position of the book leaves, said cover being cut out as at Hi to dispose the links inwardly of the side edges thereof and permit them to freely swing to open position as shown by the dotted line in Fig. l of the drawing.
In the modified form of this invention as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing the binder, aside from comprising a cover constructed as heretofore set forth, utilizes the screw I to secure a similar clamp-plate 8 thereto which in turn is similarly connected to a cover It by links I2 pivotally connected to lugs 9' and l I, said cover is provided with cut-out areas 13 and is substituted for the back 6;
With this invention fully set forth it is manifest that a book leaf binder is provided whereby the cover thereof can be swung to open position without disturbing the flat position of the leaves thereon and, through the simplicity of construction thereof, the same can be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled without the use of tools.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A book leaf binder comprising a back, a clamp-plate, screws removably securing the clamp-plate to the back, aligned apertured lugs secured onthe outer face of the clamp-plate, a cover, aligned apertured lugs secured on the outer face of the cover remote from the first mentioned lugs, and substantially U-shape links pivotally journalled in the lugs and connecting the cover to the clamp-plate.
2. A book leaf binder comprising a back, a clamp-plate of lesser length than the width of the back, elongated screws removably securing the clamp-plate to the back, aligned apertured lugs secured on the outer face and at the ends of the clamp-plate, a cover of lesser length than.
that of the back and having the side edges of its inner end reduced in width and lying on planes inwardly and parallel with the planes occupied by the side edges, aligned apertured lugs secured on the outer face of the cover remote from and in longitudinal alignment with the first mentioned lugs and U-shape links disposed with their arms journalled in the apertured lugs and pivotally connecting the cover to the clampplate, said arms having their free ends burred.
3. A book leaf binder comprising a back, a clamp-plate removably secured to the back over a plurality of ledger sheets, a cover, lugs on the outer faces of the clamp-plate and cover, links engaging the lugs and swingable into engagement with the clamp-plate to retain the cover in inclined position when fully open.
4. A book leaf binder the combination of clamp-plates removably secured to opposite sides of a plurality of ledger sheets, lugs secured on the outer faces of each clamp-plate adjacent their side edges, covers on opposite sides of the ledger sheets, lugs secured on the outer faces of the covers, and links connecting the lugs on the covers to the lugs on the clamp-plates.
