WARD ROBE-BEDSTEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,310, datedl April 6, 1880.

Application filed September 10, 1879.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY S. HALE, o Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

rPhe main object of my invention is to provide for the ready application to or removal from each other of the different parts of the bed, and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional view of the bed as it appears when folded up; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line l 2 Fig. 3, a view of partof Fig. l, showing the method of detaching the movable from the fixed portion of the bed; Fig. et, a view showing the method of detaching the footboard, and Figs. 5 and 6 diagrams illustrating one of the features of my invention.

A is the iixed or upright portion of the bed, comprising the side rails et a, the back I), and front d, and B is the movable portion of the bed, comprising the side rails e, bottom-f, and end rail, g.

The pivot-rod 'i extends from one of the side rails a to the other, and is adapted to a socket, h, formed on the bottom f of the movable portion of the bed.

D is the foot-board, having opposite side pieces, E, from each of which project inwardly two pins, m and n, the former being adapted to segmental slots m and the latter to straight slots n', formed in the side rails e of the bed, bot-h sets of slots being open at the outer ends.

rPhe pins n are retained in position at the inner ends of the slots n' by means of hooked catches s, hung to the side rails e, the pins, when in position, serving as pivots on which the foot-board swings.

In each of the side rails e is a` recess, to which is adapted a bar, J, one end of the latter being connected to t-he pin m on the adjacent side piece of the foot-board, and the other end to a iixed pin, t, on one of the side rails a the effect of this rod being to insure the maintenance of the foot-board D in a vertical position at all times.

When the bar J is in place thev socket h is confined closely to the rod fi, and the portion B of the bed cannot be detached from the portion A 5 but if the ends of the bars J are detached from the pins t the portion B of the bed may be moved longitudinally until the rod t' is clear of the socket h, when said portion B is free to be detached from the portion A by an upward movement. (See Fig. 3.)

The foot-board can be detached by simply raising the hooked catches s so as to free the pins n, thereby leaving the foot-board free to bc moved longitudinally, as in Fig. 4. This may be done wit-hout detaching the bars J from the pins m, although it is more convenient to detach the bars prior to the removal of the foot-board.

It will be observed that the upper ends of the side rails co of the fixed portion of the bed are curved, and that the side pieces, E,

adapted to said curved portions, the edges of the said recessed portions of the side pieces, E, abutting against the edges of the curved portions of the side rails a when the bed is folded up, as shown in Figs 5 and 6. By this means I am enabled to dispense with brackets on the side rails, the side pieces, E, fitting closely to the side rails e of the bed, andthe latter fitting closely to the side rails a, thereby doing away with the objectionable spaces which must always exist when the side pieces, E, lap over the side rails a. or lit between the latter and the side rails c.

The construction shown also imparts a neater and more attractive finish to the bed, and considerably lightens and reduces the cost of the side pieces, E, and side rails e.

Instead of hooked catches s, spring-plates having openings to which the pins n are adapted may be substituted therefor, the plates being sprungout so as to release the pins when itis desired to remove the foot-board.

I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the side rails e of the bed, havin g open-ended slot-s a' and catches s, with the foot-board having pins n, as specified.

2. The combination of the side rails e, having slots m and n and catches s, the foot-board D, having pins m and n, and the bars J as described.
