Description

J. FINSTERER.
Commode.
No. 226,296. Patented April 6, 1880.
INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
MPEI'ERS, FHOI"I)-LITNOGRAPNEFI WASHINGTOM D. Q
UNITED STATES PATENT UFFIQEQ JOHN FIN STEREB, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMM ODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 226,296, dated April 6, 1880.
7 Application filed October 22, 1879.
manner that when the lid is opened these 1 arms rise with it and are secured automatically, so that the person that sits on the commode may rest comfortably and not be in danger of breaking the lid.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section, showing the lid open. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section, showing the lid closed. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the pendant and the ear.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the body of the commode, to which the lid or cover B and the seat E are hinged. The seat has a circular opening, which is closed by the lid D. The bowl 0 is supported by a frame or board, F, as in the ordinary commodes. To the under side of the lid B the arm G is attached, to which the pendant H, provided with a straight spring, K, on its rear side, is pivoted at I. The lower end of the pendant H is furnished with a recess, P, and projection 0, corresponding to the lug M on the ear N. This ear N is attached to about the middle of the upper inner edge of the side of the commode.
Between the seat E and the side of the commode there is a slot, R, wide enough to admit the pendant H. When the lid is closed the arm and pendant are in the position shown in Fig. 2; but the joint I is so located that it passes through the space between the lugs M and M when the lid is raised and guides the pendant into this space also. As the lid is 'raised farther the pendant glides upward in this space until the recess P is opposite to the lug M, when the spring K, which presses against the lug M, forces the pendant forward, so that it catches on the lug and is automatically locked in the position shown in Fig. 1. The projection 0 will prevent the arm from being raised too high, and the lug and spring will keep it locked.
To close the lid the pendant is pushed in the direction of the arrow, whereby the action of the spring is overcome, thus releasing the pendant and permitting the arm and pendant to again be in the position shown in Fig. 2.
A pocket to contain the paper is attached to the under side of the lid, thus avoiding the use of drawers.
This commode is very simple in construction, is more convenient than those now in use, affords the person rest, and securely holds the lid, so that a person can rest his back against the same without any liability of breaking or damaging the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A commode having self-locking arms attached to the lid, which hold the lid when it is open, in the manner described.
2. The combination of the commode A, the lid B, the arm G, the pendant'H, the spring K, and the ear N, as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the pendant H, provided with the spring K, of the lugs M and M, and of the recess P, as and for the purpose set forth.
- JOHN FINSTERER.
