ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 11 1941 Walter J. McNabb, Stckton,: Calif., assignor of one-half to William'R. Cochrane Application April 20, 1940, Serial'No. 330,703
7 Claims.
7 This invention relates generally to an improvement in nursery furniture, and particularly the invention is directed to an improved crib or babybed. l
In cribs of the type now commonly in use, the mattress frameand consequently the mattress, etc.-is immovable vertically and by reason of this fact and the depth of the crib, a person attending a child must pick up the child from the crib and place the child on a higher table or the like, in order to conveniently change the childs clothing or' otherwise administer thereto.
In order to avoid the'nec'essity of so transferring the child, I propose, as the principal object of this invention, to construct a crib so that the bed or mattress frame is adjustable from a normal lowered position upward to a substantially raised position whereby when so raised, a person can easily and conveniently attend to the child without removing the child from its. crib. Another object of the invention is to provide a crib, as above, wherein the vertical movementwill fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar .characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
Figure l is a front elevation of the improved crib.
Figure 2 is a cross-section on line 2.2 of Fig.1, the mattress frame being shown in .a fully lowered position.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation .on line 33 of Fig. 2, with the mattress frame lifted somewhat. 1
Figure 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal section on line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the foot pedal, shown in connection with its holding ratchet.
Referring now more particularlyto the characters of reference on the drawings, the improved crib includes, as usual, cover posts I which form the legs of the crib; such posts being connected by side panels 2 and end panels 3 which extend from a plane somewhat belowthe bed level to the upper ends of said legs.
A mattress frame is disposed in the crib and is normally disposed at bed level; such mattress frame comprising a rigid border frame 4 of ree carried by frame 4 and forms the mattress sup- I thenceextend into enlarged vertical grooves or port. Whenin lowered or normal position, frame 4 rests on blocks or cross cleats 6 fixed on the end panels 3 adjacent, but above the lower edges thereof.
At the ends and adjacent the corners, the frame 4V is provided with rigid .ears I which project through vertical slots 8 in the corner posts I, and
pockets 9 in said posts; said slots and grooves being of sufficient length to allow of movement of the mattress from its lowered or normal position upward to a position adjacent the top of the .crib.
The raising and lowering of the mattress frame is accomplished in the following manner:
Aflexible cable I0 is connected at one end to each of the ears 1 within the corresponding groove 9, the cable extending upward over a pulley l I in the upper end of said groove, and thence downward and about .a pulley l2 in the lower end of said groove. From the corresponding pulley I2 each cable passes through an opening l3 in the corner post, and then extends longitudinally of the crib to substantially the middle thereof; the two opposed cables adjacent one side of the crib being secured in opposed winding relation o'na drum. l4 fixed on a horizontal transverse shaft !5, while the two opposed cables adjacent the other side of the crib, are secured in opposed winding relation on. another drum l6 likewise fixed on said shaft l5.
It will thus be seen that upon rotation of shaft IS in one direction, cables It] will wind onto drums l4 and I6, causing the mattress frame to move upward relative to the remainder of the crib, while unwinding of the cables. from'the drum permits the mattress frame to lower of its own weight.
"To manually rotate shaft 15, I provide a transverse lever ll disposed below shaft 15 and pivoted at one end on one side 2 of the crib; such lever extending from said pivot across the crib and projecting below the lower edge of the other side 2', a foot pedal l8 being mounted on the projecting' end of said lever. This lever is normally raised and another flexible cable I!) is fixed at one end on the lever at a point remote from its pivot, and extends upward and winds about, and is fixed at its other end on, a third drum 26 on shaft IS. The cable I9 is so wound on drum 20 that upon depression of pedal l8 and downward swinging movement of lever ll, cable H), as it runs off drum 20, rotates the latter in a direction to cause cables ID to wind onto drums l4 and I6 and to raise the mattress frame.
Adjacent pedal l8, lever I! rides in a vertical slot 2| in a suitably mounted arcuate guide plate elements;
22; the portion' of the plate along one side of slot 2| being formed as a ratchet 23 having downwardly facing teeth, the lever being adapted for holding engagement with any one of said teeth. A leaf spring 24 is fixed on, lever IT and rides against plate 22 on the opposite side of the slot from ratchet 23; such spring urging lever l1 laterally into engagement with said ratchf et. mattress frameis raised to the desired position,
and when lever I! is latched with. ratchet 23'; the mattress frame remains so raised. To low'er said frame, the pedal is shifted laterally inter-directionto release lever I! from the ratchet, and they frame returns to a normal lowered position of its own weight, and at a speed controlled by foot pressure on the pedal. a
From the foregoi'ng'description it will be readlily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of l the inven ti'o'n'as set forth'here'in'. o I
While this specification sets forth in detail the Thus, as a person depresses pedal l8, the
present'and preferred construction of the device, still in practiceisuch deviations from such detail maybe resorted to as do not form a departure 3 y from the spirit. of, the invention, as defined by the j appended claims;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and Letters Patent. is: v
