Description

Patented Nov. 11, 1941 GARMENT James Lenaghan and Julian F. Goodenow, Kansas City, Mo., asslgnors to Goodenow Textiles Company, Kansas City, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Application January 14, 1939, Serial No. 250,987
1 Claim.
ment in such a manner as to equalize the strains thereon normally incident to wearing the garment or putting it on and taking it off; to provide a garment the several parts of which wear uniformly; to provide a garment which is comfortable to the wearer; and to provide an imy proved reinforcement together with an improved arrangement therefor relative to the garment which it reinforces.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, we have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a garment ernbodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section through the garment illustrated in Fig. l on the line 2-2 thereof.
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail plan views of the respective parts of the reinforcement in disassembled relation to the garment Aand to each other.
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail fragmentary plan views of the blanks from which parts of the front and leg panels are formed, the reinforcements for the garment being shown applied thereto prior to forming the garment.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary front elevational view of the finished garment reinforced in accordance with the present invention, one of the legs of the garment being folded to better illustrate the relation of the various parts of the garment.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
I designates a garment embodying the features of the present invention which preferably includes a waist band 2 from which depend leg members 3 and 4 and a seat member 5. The side edges of the leg members are preferably joined to each other by stitching or the like as indicated at E, to the side edges of the seat member, by stitching or the like as indicated at 1, Fig. 2, and to the lower edge of the seat member by the stitching 8, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The inner front edges of the leg members are preferably arranged to overlap each other to form inner and outer ily members 9 and I0 respectively, which may be removably secured to each other in a suitable manner as indicated by the fastening devices II.
It has been found that noticeable signs of wear in a garment of this character first appear in the crotch and lower fly portions of the garment and it has therefore been found desirable to reinforce those portions of the garment which first show signs of wear in order to provide a garment which wears uniformly.
To this end, the crotch and y portions of the garment are reinforced by a patch or the like I2, the parts of which are indicated at I3 and I4 in Figs. 3 and 4. l
As a matter of practice, the patch parts I3 and I4 are preferably applied to the garment forming blanks prior to the actual formation of the garment. For example, the patch part I3 is appiled to the leg blank I5, Fig. 5, in such a manner that the inner edge I6 of the lower section I1 thereof is substantially coincident with the inner edge I8 of the blank I5 between the points I9 and 20 thereof. The inner edge 2| of the upper section 22 of the patch part I3 is so arranged as to be set back `from the inner edge 23 of the blank I5, the blank I5 and patch part I3 being notched, as shown `at 24 to admit of folding the inner edge of the blank substantially along the edge 2I of the patch part throughout the length of the blank above the notch 24 after which it may be sewed in a suitable manner to finish that portion of the garment.
The patch part I4 is of substantially similar i character, except that a notch is preferably not provided between the inner edge 25 of the upper section 26 and the edge 21 of the lower section 28 of the patch part. The edge 25 of the patch part I4 is, however, preferably arranged to be secured to the blank 29 forming the leg member 4 of the garment along the inner edge 30 thereof after folding the hidden edge 3 IA of the blank inwardly to nish that portion of the garment, the edge 3l of the blank 29 corresponding to the opposite edge 23 of the blank I5.
The top edges 21 and 32 of the lower sections 28 and I1 of the respective patch parts are preferably arranged in coincident relation with the edges 33 and 34 of the blanks I5 and 29 respectively, which edges 21--32-33-34 are arranged to be joined as shown at 35, Fig. 7, by stitching or the like 6, the lower inner edges I8 and 36 of the blanks I5 and 29 being turned inwardly and rearwardly relative to each other in such a manner as to place the edges IG and 31 in a position adjacent the bottom edge of the seat member 5 where they may be joined to the seat member as by stitching shown at 38 in Fig. 7. The outer edges 39-4-4I and 42-43-44 of the respective patch parts may-be appropriately designed to enhance the appearance of the garment and to eiiiciently cooperate with the particularly described inner edges of the patch parts in conjunction with the stitching and leg and seat forming blanks to reinforce the garment in the crotch portion thereof.
As a matter of practice, peripheral tabs 45, 46, 41, and 48 may be provided on each of the patch parts, the inside edges of which, contiguous to the patch parts per se, dene the outer edges of the patch parts when the same are secured to the garment in the manner indicated in Figs. 1 and 7, the tabs preferably being turned under while the stitching is being performed in order to secure the patch parts and provide a finished appearance for the garment.
When the inner edges of the leg blanks are joined, as above described, the ly members 9 and i0 may be overlapped in relation to each other and secured in overlapped relation by stitching or the like 49, Fig. 7.
With the arrangementv described, the patch parts i3 and I4 reinforce the garment in the crotch portion thereof and appear to form a point 50 at which strains on the garment center as a result of either pulling the garment on or off or merely wearing the garment. The point v 5@ of the garment is reinforced not only by the patch parts, which are joined thereto, but also by the stitching connecting the patch parts to the various parts of the garment.
The reinforcement for the garment is so arranged as to form a neat appearing adjunct to the garment and has been found not to bulge or otherwise tend to cause discomfort to the wearer. The reinforcement has also been found to equalize the strains placed upon the garment.
and to prevent shifting of parts of the garment in relation to each other and the garment maintains its fit thus enhancing the comfort of the wearer.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a garment of the character described, a blank having an inner edge provided with a notch, a reinforcement for the blank comprising a patch having a lower section, the inner edge of which is attached to and is coincident with the inner edge of said blank below the notch, said patch having an upper section provided with an inner edge attached to and spaced inwardly from the inner edge of the lower section and from the inner edge of the blank a distance equal to a predetermined fold of the blank and dening a fold line on which the blank is folded to furnish a fly member, a second blank having an inner edge provided with a notch, and a second reinforcement for the second blank comprising a patch having a lower section, the inner edge of whichis attached to and is coincident with the inner edge of said blank below said notch, said second patch having an upper section provided with an inner edge attached to and spaced inwardly from the inner edge of the lower section and from the inner edge of said second blank above the notch a distance equal to a predetermined fold of the blank and deiining a fold line on which said second blank is folded to furnish a ily member for the garment cooperating with the first named y member.
