VIN CENT R. PAOLUCCI %J%W, 4004a ATTORNEYS V. R. PAOLUCCI April 19, 1966 MEN'S GARMENT 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Aug. 26, 1963 INVENTOR.
VINCE NT R. PAOLUCCI k/0% A WJ,
ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,246,341 MENS GARMENT Vincent R. Paolucci, 1391 Ranchland Drive, Cleveland, ()hio Filed Aug. 26, 1963, Ser. No. 304,432 1 Claim. (Cl. 2224) This invention relates to mens garments, and more particularly mens underpants.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved mens garment, of the character mentioned, having as an integral part an improved form of suspensory that is built into the garment in a manner efiiciently to accomplish the purposes of a suspensory and afford a maximum of comfort to the wearer.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an improved garment of the kind referred to that is simple in construction and therefore economical to manufacture and may be sold at a moderate price.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from a reading of the following detailed description of one embodiment of the invention in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front elevation of a garment embodying this invention;
FIG. 2 is a view in section taken along the lines 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the garment of FIG. 1 as seen from above and looking downward into the garment toward the front;
FIG. 4 is a view of half of the garment according to this invention before the members are sewn together; and
FIG. 5 is a view illustrating how the front members are folded and sewn to the back member.
Referring to the drawings, there is depicted therein as one illustrative embodiment of this invention a pair of mens boxer-type shorts composed of front members and 11, leg members 12 and 13, a back member 14 and an elastic belt 15 folded and sewn together as hereinafter described. The front members 10 and 11 have pleated portions 17 and 18, respectively, which cooperate with the back member 14 to define the suspensory according to this invention. The front members have portions 20 and 21 which lie below the pleated portions and form part of the short legs 22 and 23, respectively. Each of the pleated portions of the front members 10 and 11 form an outside fold at 26 in the front of the garment and a fold 27 on the inside of the garment and then continue on in a downwardly direction to form the inside portions of legs 22 and 23. These pleats are sewn closed along the leg seams 30, 31, and have their other ends open and are sewn to the bottom edge of the seat member 14 as will hereinafter more clearly appear. The pleats drape or taper from the side leg seams downwardly toward the crotch of the garment and form the bottom or lower part of the suspensory. The pleated portions, referred to, cooperate with the bottom or seat portion of the back member 14 to complete the suspensory part of the gar in overlapped relationship and sewn at the tops and hottoms to provide the customary fly-opening.
Referring particularly to FIG. 4, one-half of the elastic belt which is sewn on the inside of the top of the garment is shown in the upper portion of the view. The other portion shows one of the front members, one of the leg members, and a half of the seat member 14 before the members are sewn together. The members not shown in FIG. 4 are duplicates of those shown. In assembling the members to form the garment the edges 40 of leg members 12 and 13, which edges are preferably cut with the grain of the material, are sewn to the edges 41, 42 and 43 of the front members forming the front leg seams 30 and 31. Before the front members 10 and 11 are sewn to the leg members 12 and 13, they are folded so as to place the intermediate panels 46 and 47 underneath the lower parts of the upper panels 50 and 51 and above the upper part of lower panels 20 and 21, respectively, thus forming even edges which are then sewn to the leg members. It will be noted that in the embodiment shown the panels 46 and 47 are located at an angle of approximately to 75 with the leg seams 30 and 31.
Thereafter the edges 55 of the leg members, which members are pentagonal in shape, are sewn to the opposite side edges 56 of the back member 14 to form the seams 60 and 61 and the lower edges 62 of the back member and two edges 63 of the leg members, which edges are contiguous, are sewn to the two contiguous edges 64 and 65 of the front members including the open inner edges of the pleats in the leg members, to form the U-shaped crotch inseam, that is, the seam 66 in the crotch of the garment. Subsequently, the elastic belt 15, which is of a length suitable to conform to the desired waist measurement, is stretched to the inside of the upper part of the garment and sewn thereto by a plurality of rows of stitching. The two leg openings are formed by the edges 70, 71 and 72, 73 of the front leg members 10, 12 and 11, 13, respectively.
A garment constructed as shown and described provides a suspensory which is divided into two sections, one on each side of the front, each section having a substantially triangular lower surface and having a section which tapers upwardly toward the leg portion. The suspensory is formed in the front members substantially in front of the wearer, which is a definite improvement over the prior art types of garments in which the suspensory was formed substantially between the legs of the wearer.
The illustrations show the various seams and the manner in which the material is cut and sewn together to form the construction described. It will be understood, however, that the garment may be made of any suitable material and that various parts of the garment may be otherwise cut and sewn together to produce substantially the same construction and result-s without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a mans garment: an elastic waistband adapted to support the garment to the waist of the wearer; two duplicate more or less V-shaped first members comprising more or less rectangularly-shaped upper panel portions, having their upper edges connected to said waist band and their adjoining edges sewn together to provide a fly-opening, intermediate panel portions folded inwardly and upwardly behind the lower parts of said upper panel portions, and downwardly extending lower panel portions forming parts of the legs of the garment; two duplicate more or less pentagonal second members having their upper edges sewn to said waist band and generally vertically edges sewn along a generally vertical seam to the general vertical edges of said first members remote from said flyopening with the adjacent edges of said folded panel portions of said first members sewn into said generally vertical seams; and a more or less generally rectangular-shaped combination back and seat member having its upper edge sewn to said waist band and its two opposite edges adjacent thereto sewn to the generally vertical edges of the .two second members opposite to the edges sewn to said first member and its lower edge, that is, the edge opposite said top edge together with the edges of said second members continuous therewith sewn to the adjacent edges of the said first member below said fly-opening.
