My invention relates to ophthalmic mountings and more particularly to improved means for mounting and holding lenses. One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a mounting frame of the above described character wherein the lens rims are of a sectional construction to permit certain of the sections to be replaced or interchanged with others to accommodate lenses of various sizes or shapes and to permit the lenses to be secured to certain sections in a manner to provide a mounting of the semi-rimless type.
Another object of my invention is to provide a frame of the above described character so constructed and arranged wherein the various sections may be easily connected together or disassembled to permit substitution of other sections whereby a considerable number of mountings of different styles may be assembled from a minimum number of parts thereby eliminating the necessity of carrying a large number of mountings in stock for use in connection with various lenses.
A further object of my invention is to provide a mounting of the above described character which is simple in construction, durable in use, efiicient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a mounting constructed in accordance with my invention.

partly in section, illustrating the means for connecting the upper and lower sections together adjacent the bridge piece.
Figure 4 is a disassembled fragmentary perspective view illustrating the upper and lower sections together adjacent the bridge piece.
Figure 5 is a disassembled fragmentary perspective view illustrating the upper and lower sections together adjacent the temple bar connecting side.
Figures 6, 7 and 8 are fragmentary perspective views of modifications of the means illustrated in Figures 3 and 4.
Figure 9 is a front elevation of a modified form of mounting.
Figure 10 is a front elevation of a'still further modified form of mounting.
In practicing my invention, as illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, I provide a lens frame 5 formed with lens rims 6 each having upper and lower sections l and 8 respectively. The upper sections are connected together with a bridge piece 9 and each are provided with a laterally extending temple bar bearing if? having a bifurcated end for receiving therein the pivoted end of a temple bar (not known) The bridge piece 9 is of a substantially inverted U-shaped construction having depending arms ll formed adjacent the lower ends with laterally extending portions IZ integrally connected to the adjacent ends of the sections 1 and maintaining the arms in spaced relation therewith. The lower ends of the arms are fashioned with subjacent cylindrical-shaped pins l3 arranged within the bores 14 of socket members I5 formed on the ends of laterally extending ears IS, the opposite ends of the ears being integrally connected to the adjacent ends of the sections 8 and forming seats for receiving abutting ends of the sections 1 as clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing. The socket members I5 are provided with set screws I! for engaging the pins l3 whereby to maintain the latter fixed within the bores [4 thereby connecting the ends of the sections 1 and 8 together adjacent the nose piece. Subjacent the bearings ID, the lower sections are formed with laterally extending temple bar auxiliary bearings I8 connected to the bearings l0 by means of screws H). The outer ends of the bearings l8 are recessed and spaced from the bearings IU whereby to permit temple bars having bifurcated ends to be pivoted to the bearings l0 and [8. The ends of the arms ll, adjacent the pins l3, are provided with rearwardly disposed portions each having nose guards ZlJ fixed thereto for engagement with the sides of the nose of the wearer in the usual manner. Obviously, when the parts are assembled in the foregoing manner, lenses arranged within the rims B are retained therein against displacement. However, should it be desirable to provide a frame of a semi-rimless type, the lower sections 8 may be detached from the upper sections 1 by removing the screws l9 and loosening the set screws [1 to permit the lower sections of the rims to be separated. The lenses are provided with frame members 2| each comprising a pair of spaced ears through which extends a screw 22 connecting the side of the lens adjacent the nose therebetween and said members are fashioned adjacent the ears with depending portions 23 for engaging the edges of the lenses and with laterally disposed socket members 24 provided with set screws and receiving the pins of the nose piece 9 in the same manner as heretofore described.
As illustrated in Figure 9 the upper and lower sections 3|! and 3| may be of a shape to accommodate lenses of a contour different from that disclosed in the preferred embodiment.
As illustrated in Figure 7 of the drawing, the socket member 4|) thereof may be formed with a bore 4| of a substantially square configuration to receive a similar shaped pin 42 formed on the lower end of the arm 41 of the nose piece.
In the modified form illustrated in Figure 6 the end of the lower section 50 is formed with a laterally extending portion which is provided with side, front and rear walls 52, 53 and 54 respectively. Said walls extend an appreciable distance above the portion and receive therein the lower end of the arm 55 of the bridge piece 56 and the adjacent end of the upper section 51 seats upon the upper face of the portion 5| and laterally of the walls. The portion 5| between the front and side walls is formed with an upwardly extending opening 58 for accommodating therein a screw 59 threaded into a threaded bore 60 arranged in the lower end of the arm 55 whereby to secure the upper and lower sections together in fixed relation.
In the modified form illustrated in Figure 8, the end of the lower section 10 has formed thereon a housing H provided with a laterally extending square-shaped opening 12 for receiving therein a similar shaped horizontally extending pin 13 provided on the adjacent end 14 of the upper section 15. The lower end of the adjacent arm 16 of the bridge piece 11 seats upon the upper face of the housing H and the pin is maintained within the opening 12 by means of a set screw 18 carried by the housing whereby the upper and lower sections are maintained in fixed relation with respect to each other.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and efiicient form of 1 ophthalmic mounting whereby different styles of frames may be obtained and wherein lenses of various sizes may be accommodated.
It is also obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be distinctly understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in advance forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In an ophthalmic mounting, a frame having a pair of upper lens engaging rim sections, a bridge piece disposed between and rigidly connected to the inner portions of the said rim sections, a pin extending laterally inward from the inner end portion of each of the said rim sections, a pair of lower lens engaging rim sections, a housing mounted at the inner end of each of the said lower rim sections and extending laterally inward to provide a bore shaped to slidably receive the pin of the upper section therein, and means for detachably connecting the outer sides of the said upper and lower rim sections.
2. In an ophthalmic mounting, a frame having a pair of upper lens engaging rim sections, an
approximately U-shaped bridge piece disposed,
between and rigidly connected to the said him sections above the ends of the said sections, a pin of non-circular cross section projecting laterally inward, from the lower projecting end portion of each upper rim section, a pair of lower lens engaging rim sections, each of the said lower sections having an inwardly directed flange formed at its inner end portion, a non-cirgilar housing mounted on each of the said flanges and disposed to provide a bore adapted to receive a pin of an upper rim section therein, and means for detachably connecting the outer sides of the said upper and lower rim sections.
