KINITED STATES PATENT Urrrcn.
AUSTIN ADDAMS, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,148, dated April 6, 1880. Application filed July 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern ,Be it known that I, AUSTIN ADDAMS, of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improvementin plows; and it consists in the devices hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim, for attaching the plowshare to the beam.
The object of the invention is to provide an efi'ective means of securing the share to the plow-beam, whereby the pressure on the fastening devices is equalized, and by means of which a transverse bearing is produced in such a manner thatit will not slip no matter how great the pressure.
It is also the object of the invention to prevent the plow being obstructed by stalks or stubble, and this is effected by bowing the arm to which the share is attached, so that the obstructions will pass between the arm and land-side.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of the device constituting the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the piece B.
In the accompanying drawings, A, B, and G represent the three arms or parts composing the attachment.
The arm A is a fiat bar of metal bent into an angular form adjacent to its center, as shown, and provided in its lower end with a slot, at, and in its upper portion with the two apertures 12, which are separated about the distance of the width of a plow-beam, the said upper portion above the angular center of the arm being curved or inclined forward.
The piece B corresponds in size and form with the upper curved portion of the arm A, and is supplied with two apertures,d, corresponding in size and position with the apertures bin the said arm A. The piece B and the curved upper end of the arm A serve to clamp the device to the plow-beam, the arm A being placed on one side of the beam, the piece B on the other, and
.e, and an aperture, f, whereby bolts being passed through the apertures Z) (I, one bolt being immediately above and the other directly below the beam. Thus any pressure against the lower end of the device is borne equally by the two bolts, which, on account of the curvature of the arm A and piece B, afford a transverse bearing for the attachment and are thereby prevented from slipping.
The arm 0 also curves forward, and about its central portion is bowed outward to the left. The lower end of the arm 0 is suitably fashioned to receive the plowshare, while its upper end is furnished with a transverse slot, it is adjustably secured to the lower slotted end of the arm A by bolts g, one of which passes through the transverse slot 6 and the slot at, and permits the arm 0 to be adjusted upon the desired inclination. The lower bolt, 9, passes through the aperture f and slot to, and, besides assisting to resist the pressure against the plow, acts as an axle upon which the arm 0 can move while being adjusted.
By bowing the central portion of the arm 0 outward, as above described, there is a space formed between the land-side of the plowshare and the said arm, through which stalks and stubble may pass when the plow is in motion without obstructing it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The angular arm A, having a curved or inclined upper end, apertures b, and slot to, in combination with the curved or inclined clamping-piece B, having aperturesd, and with the curved arm 0, pivoted to the lower end of the arm A by the bolt g, and provided with a slot, 6, through which and the slot at another bolt, g, passes, whereby the arm 0 may be adjusted, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in plows as above described I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of June, 1879.
