Description
J. FREITAS EYE SHIELD Oct. 28, 1941.
Filed June 28, 1941 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 28, 1941 UNITED, STATES PATENT, OFFICE a EYE SHIELD June Freitas, Hollywood, Calif.
Application June 28, 1941, Serial No. 400,263
6 Claims.
This invention relates to a cosmetic shield, which is constructed to prevent cosmetics in the form of paints or powders from coming into contact with portions of the skin other than those to which it is desired to apply them.
Speaking more specifically, the invention in one of its preferred forms, pertains to a shield made of sheet material cut into the proper shape to be supported in a position wherein it fits under the lines of eyelashes of the user so that paint may be applied to the eye lashes without disfiguring the eye lid and adjacent part of .the face below the lashes.
Among the objects of the invention are: To provide a simplified skin shield capable of being manufactured at a minimum cost; to provide a shield that will be peculiarly well contoured to fit under the eye lashes and close to the side of the nose of the user; and to provide a shield which, in addition to its other merits is so contoured as to be reversible, thus qualifying a single shield, made according to the invention, tobe used to protect the eye lashes first of one eye and then of the other while applying the cosmetic .or coloring, and to do this in such a manner that both the upper and lower lashes of each eye may be satisfactorily painted.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates what is at present deemed to be a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a view looking at one of the faces of the device illustrating it in full lines positioned for use during application of paint to the lashes of one of the eyes, and in dotted lines positioned for use upon the other eye.
Fig. 2 is a side edge view thereof, positioned for use, as in Fig. 1, on line 22 of Fig. 1. The brush and the profile of the face are included in the view.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the shield I0 is made of a suitable sheet material of atleast a semi-rigid character, for example of Celluloid. Said shield is shaped somewhat as an hour glass, but among other particulars, differs therefrom in not being so narrow in its mid-length portion,
hence may be defined, as to its general shape, as of a stocky hour glass form. Said shield is symmetrically shaped, having a concave upper edge II and an identically shaped, though reversely positioned lower edge I 2. Said shield has its left (as viewed in the solid line portion of Fig. 1) edge formed as a compound or slightly S-shaped curve having a convex upper portion l4 and a concave lower portion IS. The opposite side edge of the shield is correspondingly shaped, having its lower part Ma convex and its upper part I5a concave. The various opposite edges of the shield are identically shaped but are reversely directed in relation to each other.
As to its general outline the shield may be said to be shaped as a rhombus having rounded corners and possessing a sufiicient degree of obliquity to be noticeable; each end edge of the shield being concave between its rounded corner portions and each side edge thereof being defined by a compound or slightly S-shaped curvature. Each of the upper rounded corner portions 25 and 26 of the shield and of the corresponding lower corner portions 25a and Mia-blends in a streamline fashion with the adjoining curved portions of the shield. The corner portions 25 and 25a, which aline with the longer diagonal dimension of the shield, are shown as being somewhat more eyes, and with its long concave edge [5 adjacent to the nose 22. A facial paint brush 23 or other cosmetic applicator may now be stroked downwardly across the eyelashes, doing which will paint only the lashes, the shield keeping the paint off from the skin immediately below them. I
After the lashes of one eye have been painted the opposite end portion of the shield will be applied to the other eye in a similar manner to protect the skin therebelow while its lashes are being treated.
The diagonally opposite corner portions 25, 25a of the shield are rounded, and also its diagonally oppositecorners 26, 26a, this being done to contribute to the comfort of the user.
The device may be used to shield the skin and eye below the eyebrow during eyebrow painting, by disposing one of the convex portions M, Ma, just below the eyebrow; or to protect the skin above the eyebrow by placing one of the concave edge portions l5 or [5a superjacent to the eyebrow.
I claim:
1. In an article of the kind described, a shield of sheet material having the general shape of a stocky hour glass, having identically shaped, reversely directed concave end edges.
2. The subject matter of claim 1 and, said shield having concave long edge portions.
3*. In'an article of the kind described, a shield of sheet material having the general shape of a stocky hour glass, having identically shaped, reversely directed concave end edges, said shield having concave long edge portions and each of its corner portions being rounded.
4. A shield of the kind described which, as to its general outline is shaped as a rhombus having rounded corners, each end edge of said shield being concave between the adjacent rounded corners and each side edge thereof being defined by a compound or slightly S-shaped curvature.
5. A shield of the kind described which, as to its general outline is shaped as a rhombus having rounded corners, each end edge of said shield being concave between the adjacent rounded corners and each side edge thereof being defined by a compound or slightly S-shaped curvature, said curvatures at opposite side edges of the shield being reversed as to the positions of their concave and convex portions.
6. The subject matter of claim 5 and each rounded corner portion of the shield blending in a streamline fashion with the adjoining curved portions of the shield.
JUNE FREI'IAS.
