Application January 28, 1941, Serial No. 376,371
1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in carriers and more particularly to a carrier especially adapted for heavy duty use.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus which can be used both as a hand carrier and truck.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a carrier which can be readily applied to the structure to be carried and just as easily removed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary side elevational view showing the carrier applied to a refrigerator,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the carrier applied to a refrigerator and showing the wheels in lowered position,
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the carrier fragmentarily showing a refrigerator held therein,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detailed sectional View taken substantially en a line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detailed sectional view taken substantially on a line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the carrier is made up of a pair of structure gripping units generally referred to by'reference characters A and B. These units are of identical construction and a description of one will suice for both.
The unit A consists of an elongated base member 5 having a pair of uprights 6, 6, secured by their lower ends thereto. These uprights 6 are secured by bolts 'I to the base member 5 and are connected adjacent their upper and lower ends by spreader rods or tie rods 8. The uprights 5 connect to the base 5 at one side portion thereof so as to afford a top surface upon which the structure to be carried can set.
Handles 9, 9, are provided for the uprights 6 and each handle is pivotally connected to a bracket I projecting from an upper portion of the corresponding upright 6. Breakable brace members I i are provided between the intermediate portion of the handles 9 and the uprights 6.
Each of the uprights E has a bell-crank I 2 pivotally mounted adjacent its lower end. An arcuate-shaped link I 3 has its lower end pivotally secured as at I4 to the outstanding portion of the corresponding bell-crank I2 while its upper portion is pivotally connected as at I5 to an intermediate portion of a corresponding leg of a U-shaped treadle I6. As can be seen in Figures 1 and 3, the free ends of the leg portions of the treadle I5 are pivotally secured as at I'I to the uprights 6. As can be seen in Figures 1 and 3, an axle I8 extends between the heel portions of the bell-cranks I2 and has the rollers or wheels IQ mounted thereon.
Loops 2U are provided adjacent the upper and lower ends of each upright B and from these extend strap sections 2|. Corresponding upper and lower strap sections 2l of the units A and B are buckled together as at 22 along the sides of a structure 23 that is to be moved.
Obviously, the structure 23 can be moved with the carrier in the position shown in Figure 1, that is, with the wheels I9 in elevated position, or by pulling outwardly on the treadle I5 and substantially standing on the treadle, the carrier and the structure 23 can be lifted so that the wheels I5 assume the support of the entire structure, to the end that the carrier can be wheeled with its load.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A carrier of the class described comprising a horizontally arranged cross bar, a pair of spaced uprights having their lower ends connected to the outer face of the cross bar, means for connecting the uprights together in spaced relation, a pair of bellcranks having one end pivotally connected to the inner edges of the uprights adjacent the lower ends thereof, a rod extending between the bellcranks and having its ends connected with the heels of the bellcranks, rollers carried by the rod, said bellcranks extending outwardly from the uprights, a pair of arcuate links pivotally connected to the other ends of the bellcranks, a treadle member of inverted U-shape having the terminals of its limbs pivotally connected to the inner edges of intermediate portions of the uprights and means for pivotally connecting the upper ends of the links with the intermediate portions of the limbs of the treadle member, whereby upward movement of the treadle member will cause the links to lift the bellcranks to raise the rollers off a surface on which the carrier rests and downward movement of the treadle member will swing the bellcranks downwardly to place the rollers against the surface and lift the carrier with its lower end above the surface.
