8 Claims; (Cl. HL2-20) Thisinvention relates to fabric guides for sewing machinesand more particularlyto uncurling guides for hosiery vseaming sewing machines.A
The primary object` of the present invention is theprovision ofT an improved latching device` for-locking-the uncurling guide in operative or retracted-position... l A
Another object of .this invention is to provide a latcliing Vdevice comprising two latches each having its own control-leverl whereby the respective; latches :may be alternately shifted into inoperative positions.
With the above and other objects in View, as
will hereinafter appear, the rinvention comprises the devicesr combinations, and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawing Aof a preferred embodiment' of-the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained-thereby will be readily understood by those-skilled in the art.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the upper portion of the machinefrarnefshowing-l the uncurling device in its operative position (full lines) andin its inoperative position (dottedA lines) Fig; 2 is a disassembled perspective viewi showing thel-va-riouselements of the uncurling guide iatching deviceN and the meanspfor releasing the same.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of .the ,uncurling guide .latching device with the control-arms partiallybrcken away to show the` relative positions of :the-latches-when the guide is in operative position..r
Fig-4 is a view-similar to Fig. V3, showing the relativepositionsv of the latches: when the guide is ininoperative position.
Inatheembodiment of the invention selected for. illustration my improved uncurling guide is shown asfapplied to a so-called cup-feed sewing..machine.having.a standard li and an overhanging bracket 2 from which depends theun.-
my .copending application Serial No. 296,031, filed` September. 22, ,1939,:of which .this application is a division:`v-
The uncurlingguide illustrated-includes a central guiding plate 4 terminating at its upper end in a supporting head-portion 5f Disposed on opposite sides ofthe guiding rplate adjacent itslower end are uncurlers 6 yieldinglypressed bytheusual spring I against the faces of the guiding plate. Tfhevmounting` for the uncurling guide is identical withV thatshown and described in my copending application Serial No. 303,947,
iiledNovember 13, 1939.-
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the. supporting head4 5 of the central guiding plated is formed with a bearing aperture 8 through which projects a cylindrical bossv 9 formed upon a stationary locking disk I9. The lockingdisk is supported sothat its boss 9 is rigidly4 fastened face to face-to a verticalplate I I by a bolt I2, with the head 5 of the central-guiding plate 4 interposed between .thefverticalplate Il and the locking diskv iii... To permit the central guiding plate ll totur-n freely uponthe boss 9, 'the width of said bossis slightly in excess of thethi-ckness of the central guiding plate.
To positively. hold. the uncurling guide in set positionsthelocking disk.- Il] is formed with two stop-notches` I3 and I4. d, Cooperating with these stop-notches are twolpivotalflatches l5 and It` biased toward each otherbya coil-spring I'I connectecl by shouldered screws I8- and i9 to the freeends of the latches.. aperturcd-as at 2li. and -2I to receive a fulcrumstud ZZfthreaded intoan ear 23-formed on the i head 5 ofthe centralguidingzplate A.' Latch I5 has secured to it by screwsl and 2liy a control.-
f lever ZElhaVing at-its free Yend an odset fingerpiece l2&3.4 Latch I6 has similarly secured to it byjscrews I9 vand 21,V a control-lever 28 having at itszfree. end an offsetnger-piece 29.` The two control-levers 25 and 28 cross each other, .the control-lever 28 being bent as at 30 to provide clearance for 4the control-'lever 25, rwhereby independent movement of one control-lever will not interferewith the other control-lever.
Referring `now to Fig. `.1, it willbeunderstood that the uncurling, guideis shown `in full. lines in its normaloperative position. In such positionthelatch I5 is disposed inA the'notchV i3 in the lockingr disk Il), A.see Fig. 3, while thelatch I8 rides on the peripheryl of the locking disk, the'latch yI5 being held inthe notch I3 by the coil-spring I1. Whenit is'desired to `shiftthe uncurling guide, out of operative position "andi into the position shown `indotted lines ,in Fig. l,
pressurais .manuall-yaapplied fin an.. upward direca tionrupon the dinger-:piece :2 6;;iof1the control-lever;
The two latches are 25, which lever in response to this pressure moves in a counterclockwise direction and the initial with and enters theV notch I4 in the locking disk.
During this turning of the guide the latches I5 and I6 ride upon the periphery of the locking disk I I?, the coil-spring I1 being sufficiently strong so that pressure on the control-lever 25 in a Y counterclockwise direction will not tend'to lift the latch I5 oi the periphery of the locking disk I0, but will effect a substantial rigid connection between the control-lever 25 and the guide.
When it is desired to return the uncurling guide vto operative position, such asfshown in full lines in'` Fig. l, pressure is manually applied in a downward direction upon the finger-piece 29 ofv the control-lever 28, which lever inV response tol this pressure-moves in a clockwise direction, thereby rst moving the latch I6' out of thej notch I4 and, secondly, turning the guide about the boss 9 until the latch I5 registers with and 'Ihe- 301' moving the guide when operated in one direcenters the notch I3 in the locking disk IB.-
two control- levers 25 and 28 are designed for` independent Yoperation and when it is desired to move the guide into inoperative position con-M trol-lever 25 is operated, and when it is desired to return the guide to operative position controllever 28 is operated.
From the above description, it will be apparent that an uncurling guide has been provided having means`v including two latches, each having its own control-lever for positively locking the guide in or out of operative position. In the embodiment chosen for illustration, the control levers 25 and 28 are each formed of sheet-metal and each is removably secured to its respective latch by means of screws. Obviously the control-levers may be formed integral with the latches without departing from the invention. In Figi, it will be seen that the free ends of the control-levers, when the guide is in operative position, are preferably positioned in advance of the guide so that the operator may conveniently strike the control lever 25 with an upward movement of the hand to shift the guidev into inoperative or 1.
