Description

D. W. CLARK}, Window-Sa h,
No 2255570. Patented Mar; 16, 1880.
- WITNESSES: INV ENTOR:
' ATTORNEYS,
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
DAVID W. CLARK, OF TIDIOUTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WlNDOW-SASH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,570, dated March 16, 1880.
' Application filed July 2, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID W. CLARK, of Tidioute, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Window-Sash and Holder therefor, of which the following is a specification.
The object if my invention is to construct window-sashes and apply them to their frames so that they may readily be removed for washing or other purposes without detaching the stop-bead or otherwise disturbing any part of the frame.
The invention consists in combining with window-sash strips a spring-pressed arm having a hook end th it catches over a pin in one strip, and is pro iCed with a pin that passes through the other strip, as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a sectional front elevation of a window sash and frame fitted with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the sash and frame on line w of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 show the adjoining faces of the twopart side bars and the means for connecting them. Fig. 5 is a section of the two parts as connected.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 7
A is a window-sash fitted in a frame, B, of usualcharacter. a, is one of the side bars of the sash, which is constructed in accordance with my invention, as next described.
sockets c, which set in recesses and interlock, by a sliding movement of the pieces a a, in opposite directions, so that the parts are held togetherfirmly. Topreventendwisemovement of the pieces a a, whereby the tongues would be disconnected accidentally or intentionally from the outside, the bar a is fitted with bolts or catches operated from the inside of the 'window.
The catch consists of an arm, e, hung in a mortise in a, andhaving a hook end that catches over a pin on the strip a. This arm 6 is thrown forward by a spring, and has connected to its moving end a pin, a, that projects through a slot in the face of bar a, whereby it can bewithdrawn.
To remove the sash from the window, the catch will first be withdrawn, the sash or strip a then removed in the direction for disconnecting the tongues c, and by a slight pressure inward on the bar a the joint between a and a will be broken and the sash will be free. The rabbet of the adjoining edges is made near the inside of the sash, so that the sash is readily removed inward, as mentioned, but cannot be moved outward.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a window-sash, with the strips a a, of the spring-pressed pivoted arm 6, having a hook end that catches over a pin on strip a, and provided with a pin, a, that projects through a slot in strip a, as and for the purpose specified.
