'38 Claims. (01.29-33) This invention relates generally to heading 1 machines and constitutes a-division of my application filed March 16, 1936, bearing Serial No. 69,242.
I One of. the essential objects of this invention is to provide the stock with an adjustable stop that determines the length of blank to be cut by the shearing mechanism.
Another object is to provide a stop of this type that is adapted, when a length slightly greater than that required for the blank is advanced toward the shearing mechanism, to feed backward the proper distance to provide just the proper length to be sheared.
Other objects, advantages and novel details of construction of this invention will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accom panying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved mecha nism as applied to a heading machine;

The straightening mechanism G may be of any suitable construction adapted to take out any curvature in the stock as delivered thereto. As shown, it consists of a pair of jaws G, G which are slidably secured in a frame including the side plates G, G and spacers G ,,G The frame is slidable in ways G fastened by bolts G to the bed A. As shown, these ways G" comprise vertically spaced horizontal bars provided in their inner faces at their opposed edges with that receive vertical ribs G of the side plate G of the slidable frame and permit a limited movement thereof. The jaws G and G are held from endwise movement by keys G engaging the plates G and G The lower jaw G is adjusted vertically by two spaced set screws G which permit of properlyaligning it with the work, and
the jaw G is adjusted by a single set screw 6". Thus, these jaws can be clamped upon the work with just sufficient pressure to perform the straightening operation and. to give the necessary resistance against back feeding. The sliding movement of the frame is limited by stops G These are preferably set screws which threadedly engage lugs G of the ways G in the path of the plate G forward and in rear thereof. These stops may be adjusted in the lugs G to prevent the straightener from being carried backward during the rearward movement of the feed mechanism.
The feed mechanism H comprises a pair 'of plates H and I-I with intermediate'spacer members H and H these parts being secured to each other by bolts H The members H and H have oppositely inclined inner edges, while their outer edges are formed into racks H Shoes H secured to the bed by bolts H engage the upper and lower edges of the inner plate H to form guideways therefor. Within the space between the members H and H are arranged a pair of jaw members H and H which are wedge-shape and have their outer edges arranged parallel to the inclined inner edges of the members H and H Rollers H are arranged between the parallel faces of the jaw members and the members H and H and springs H bearing against the large ends of the wedged jaw members H and H yieldably press the same in a rearward direction. The whole construction constitutes a frictional one-way clutch which will cause the jaw members H and H to grip the work when moving in a forward direction and to release it when moving in a rearward direction. This forward and reverse movement is effected by pinions H which engage the rack members H and are mounted on shafts H carried by'the bed. The
plates H' and H extend respectively above and v below the racks H so thatthe pinions H hold the same from lateral movement. The arrangementis such that when motion is imparted to the pinions H in the direction indicated by\the arrows in Figure 2, the jaws will grip the stock and feed it forward, while upon a reverse rotaeter of the stock when pressed therethrough and a to impart thereto a finished surface; This die is mounted on the bed in alignment with the straightening dies G and feed mechanism H, and a tank 1 adjacent to the die contains a suitable lubricant for reducing friction during the drawing operation and for coating the'stock to facilitate the heading operations. Thereis also an upwardly opening tank Gr of sheet metal receiving and forming a jacket for the straightening mechanism G and containing a lubricant for the stock in passing therethrough. Preferably this tank is held in place by the bolts G used to fasten the ways'G" to the bed A and has suitable openings for receiving the stops G.
Forward of the die I in the direction of feed there is a cut-ofi mechanism which is associated with other elements of the particular machine to which the cut-off blanks are to be fed. If this machine is, as shown, a heading machine, the stock is cut into suitable lengths and then transferred laterally to a heading die. The specific construction of this heading machine forms no part of the present invention and I shall, therefore, only describe it generally. Mounted on the bed is a member J apertured for the passage of the stocktherethrough and forming one member of a shear. The cooperating member J of the shear is mounted to slide transversely across the face of the member J' and in so doing to sever the projecting portion of the stock. The member J has secured thereto a resilient clip J which yieldably holds the cut-oil blank during transfer of the same into alignment with the heading die and punch members K, K and K. These members are adapted to enga e the blank after which it will be released by the clip J and the latter together with the member J will be returned to initial position.
It is desirable to provide means for very accurately gaging the length of the cut ofi blanks.
The general operation of the mechanism is as follows:
Th shaft E has a crank or eccentric E thereon which is connected by a rod F with the reciprocating member B. The shaft E also has a gear wheel E wheel E in a 1 to 2 ratio. The gear wheel E is on a shaft E which extends to the opposite side of the machine and on each end of this shaft is a variable throw crank. On one end the crank O has a slot 0' for engaging a crank pin 0 which is adjustable radially in said slot to increase or diminish the throw thereof. This pin is connected by a rod 0 with a bell crank lever 0 and with a corresponding adjustable crank pin 0 on the actuating arm of said lever. The other arm of'the lever isconnected by a coupling pin 0'' g with one of the gears H the arrangement being shafts H1 and This might be accomplished by regulating the angle of oscillation of the pinions H but it would be difficult to accomplish this with the degree of accuracy required. I, therefore, adjust the angle of oscillation to slightly greater than the length of feed required and subsequently feed the stock backward. This is accomplished by an adjustable stop L which in one position is in alignment with the projecting portion of the stock and during the movement of the head B will bear against the outer end of said projecting portion and feed it backward. The stop L is attached to a block L which in turn is adjustably mounted on punch block B. In operation block B is moved vertically from a position where the stop L aligns with the stock to a position out of alignment therewith. The stop L is preferably provided with a screw threaded shank engaging the block L, and a locknut L serves to hold this shank in each position of adjustment.

On the opposite end of the shaft E is a variable throw crank P similar to O, the crank pin of which is.connected by a rod P with a slide P. This slide has a cam slot P which engages a pin P on the shank of the shear member J Thus,
each two revolutions of-the crank shaft E will effect one reciprocation of the shear J, and the slot P is suitably fashioned to give the desired timing of this movement.
At an intermediate point on the shaft E is mounted a cam Q which actuates a reciprocating member Q connected to a rock arm Q'on a rock sllggft g which has an arm Q for actuating the s e termittently raise and. lower theslide B with a dwell at each end of the movement thereof.

The combination with a bed, of a reciprocatory header thereon, a reciprocatory stock feeder including a one-way clutch for engaging the stock, means for varying the amplitudeof recip rocation of said feeder, and an adjustable gage stop on said header for impinging against the end -means and. feeding means through which the stock is pushed by the latter, and a gage stop carried by said reciprocatory header for impinging against, the end of the stock to slightly back feed the same and to obtain an shearedv length.
7. The combination with a bed, of a reciprocatory header mounted thereon, a reciprocatory feeding means also mounted on said bed in advance of said header, timed driving mechanism for said reciprocatory header and said reciprocatory feeding means through which there occurs a plurality of reciprocations of the former to one of the latter, shearing means intermediate said feeding means and header, a gage stop carried by said header, and means for registering said gage stop with the end of the stock during one of the reciprocations of said header to slightly back feed exactly measured the stock and to obtain an exactly measured sheared length.
8. In mechanism of the class described, a reciprocating heading die a die 10! sizing the stock before it reaches the heading die, reciprocating means for feeding stock to said sizing die, means intermediate the sizing and heading dies for shearing the stock, a gage stop carried by the heading'die, and means for registering said gage stop and with'an end of the stock to slightly back feed the stock and to obtain an exactly measured sheared length. 1

In mechanism of the class described, a re eiprocating heading die, a die for sizing the stock before it reaches the heading die; reciprocating means for feeding stock to said sizing die, means intermediate the sizing and heading dies for shearing the stock, and an adjustable gage stop carried by said heading die for impinging against an end of the stock to slightly back feed the same and to obtain an exactly measured sheared length.
10. The combination with a bed, of a reciprocatory header mounted thereon, a reciprocatory stock feeding means in advance of said header and including a one-way clutch for engaging the stock, shearing means for the stock in advance of the header, a sizing and finishing die intermediate said feeding means and header,- and a gage stop carried by said reciprocating header for impinging against an end of the stop to slightly back feed the same and to obtain an exactly measured sheared length.
11. The combination with a bed, of a reciprocating header mounted thereon, a reciprocatory feeding means in advance of said header, timed driving mechanism for said reciprocating'header and said reciprocatory feeding means through which thereoccurs a plurality of reciprocations of the former to one of the latter, shearing means for the stock in advance of the header, a gage stop carried by said header, and means for regisistering said gage stop with an end of the stock h during one of the reciprocations of the header to slightly back feed the stock and to obtain an ciprocating heading die, a die for sizing stock beof the stock to slightly back feed the same-and to obtain an exactly measured sheared length.
6. The combination with a bed, of a reciprocatory header mounted thereon, a reciprocatory stock feeding means also mounted on said bed in advance of said header and including a one-way clutch for engaging the stock, shearing means intermediate said feeding means and header, a sizing and finishing die intermediate said shearing fore it reaches the heading die, reciprocating means for feeding stock to said sizing'die, means intermediate the sizing and heading dies for shearing the stock, and a gage stock stop for the stock carried by said heading die.
13. The combination with a bed, of a reciprocating header thereon, a shear for the stock adjacent said header, a reciprocating feeder for-- advancing the stock toward the shear, and an adpendent of the feeder for impinging against an end of the stock advanced by the feeder to slightly back-feed the same to obtain a predetermined length to be sheared.
14. The combination with a bed, of a reciprocating header die, a die for sizing stock before it reaches the heading die, means for advancing stock through the sizing die toward the heading die, means intermediate the sizing and heading dies for shearing the sized stock, and a gage stop for the sized stock carried by the heading die and operable independently of the advancing means to slightly back-feed the stock to obtain an exactly predetermined length of sized stock to be sheared.
15. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a horizontally slidable head, and a vertically slidable punch block carried by said head, of means for advancing stock toward said punch block, means intermediat the advancing means and punch block for shearing the stock, the advancing means being operable to advance the stock an amount greater than the length of blank to be sheared, and means carried by thevertically movable punch block and operable independently of the stock advancing means to feed the stock backward the proper amount to provide exactly the desired length of blank to be sheared.
16. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a horizontally slidable head, and a vertically slidable punch block carried by said head, of means for advancing stock toward said punch block, means intermediate the advancing means and punch block for shearing the stock, the advancing means being operable to advance the stock an amount greater than the length of blank to be sheared, and a stop adjustably mounted on the vertically movable punch block and operable independently of the stock advancing means to feed the stock backward the proper amount to provide exactly the desired length of blank to be sheared.
17. In a machine of the class described, a sizing die, a punch block in advance of said die, means for moving stock through said die toward said punch block, means intermediate the moving means and punch block for shearing the sized stock, the moving means being operable to 'advance the stock an amount greater than the length of blank to be sheared, and means carried by the punch block and operable independently of the stock moving means to move the stock backward the proper amount to provide exactly the desired length of blank to be sheared.
18. In a machine of the class described, a sizing die, a punch block in advance of said die, means for moving stock through said die toward said punch block, means intermediate the moving means and punch block for shearing the sized stock, the'moving means being operable to advance the stock an amount greater than the length of blank to be sheared, and a stop adjustably mounted on the punch block and operable independently of the stock moving means to move the stock backward the proper amount to provide exactly the desired length of blank to be sheared.
19. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a vertically movable punch block, of a one-way clutch. movable forwardly and rearwardly relative to said punch block, said clutch being operable to grip the stock and move it forwardly toward the punch block and oper- 2,255,096 v Justable sa e stop carried by said header indeable to release the stock when moving in a rearward direction, means for straightening the stock before it reaches said clutch, said straightening means being mounted for a limited sliding movement in line with the movement of the stock, said straightening means providing Just sufllcient pressure to perform the straightening operation and to oiier resistance to rearward movement of the stock, means intermediate the clutch and punch block for shearing the stock, the clutch being operable to advance the stock an amount greater than the length of blank to be sheared, and means carried by the punch block and operable independently of the clutch tobackteed the stock to provide exactly the desired length of blank to be sheared.
20. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a vertically movable punch block, of a one-way clutch movable forwardly and rearwardly relative to said punch block; said clutch being operable to grip the stock and move it forwardly toward the punch block and operable to release the stock when moving in a rearward direction, means for straightening the stock be fore it reaches said clutch, said straightening means being mounted for a limited sliding movement in line with the movement of the stock, said straightening means providing just sufiicient pressure to perform the straightening operation and to offer resistance to rearward movement of the stock, means intermediate the clutch and punch block for shearing the stock, the clutch being operable to advance the stock an amount greater than the length of blank to be sheared, and an adjustable stop carried by the punch block and operable independently of the clutch to backfeed the stock to provide exactly the desired length of blank to be sheared.
21. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a horizontally slidable head, and a vertically slidable punch block carried by said head, of means for advancing stock toward said'punch block, means intermediate the advancing means and punch block for shearing the stock, the advancing means being operable to advance the stock an amount greater than the length of blank to be sheared, a stop adjustably mounted on the vertically movable punch block and operable independently of the stock advancing means to feed the stock backward the proper amount to provide exactly the desired length of blank to be sheared, and means carried by a part of the shearing means for holding the cut-off blank during transfer of the same into alignment with the punch block.
22. In mechanism of the class described, a sizing die, means for moving stock through said die a length slightly greater than that required for a blank, and a gage stop for the stock operable to feed the stock backward the proper amount to provide exactly the proper length of blank to be cut oil.
23. In a machine of the class described, a sizing die, means in advance of said die for shearing the sized stock, means for moving stock through the die past said shearing means, and means in advance of'said shearing means operable independently of said stock moving means to move the stock backward relative to said shearing means the proper amount to provide the desired length to be sheared.
24. In mechanism of the class described, a sizing die, means for moving stock through said die a length slightly greater than that required for a blank,means in advance of the die for shearing the sized stock, and a gage stop for the stock in advance of the shearing means operable to feed the stock backward the proper amount to provide the desired length of blank to be sheared.
25. In a machine of the class described, a. sizing die for stock, means in advance of the sizing die for shearing the sized stock, means for advancing stock through the die past the shearing means to provide a blank to be sheared, and means in advance of the shearing means for moving the stock backward the proper amount to provide the desired-length of blank to be sheared, said backward moving means being free and operable independently of the stock advancing means, the die being immovable during advancement of the stock and frictlonally resisting backward movement of the stock.
26. In a machine of the class described, a sizing die for stock, means in advance of the sizing die for shearing the sized stock, means for advancing stock through the die past the shearing means to provide a blank to be sheared, and means in advance of the shearing means for moving the stock backward the proper amount to provide the desired length of blank to be sheared,
said backward moving means being free and operable independently 'of the stock advancing means and including an adjustable member in the path of the sized stock. I
27. In a machine of the class described, means for shearing stock, means for advancing stock past the shearing means to provide a blank to be sheared, and means in advance of the shearing means for moving the stock backward the proper amount to provide the desired length of blank to be sheared, said backward moving means being free and operable independently of the stock advancing means and including a member in the path of the sized stock.
28. In a machine of the class described, a sizing die for stock, means in advance of the sizing die for shearing the sized stock, means for in advance of the shearing means for moving the stock backward the proper amount to provide the desired length of blank to be sheared.
29. In a machine of the class described. a sizing die for stock, means in advance of the siz- 1 8 die for shearing the sized stock, means for advancing stock through the die past the shearing means to provide a blank to be shearedand means in advance of the shearing means for moving the stock backward the proper amount-to provide the desired length of blank to be sheared, said backward moving means including an adjustable member in the path of the sized stock.
30. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a multiple punch block, of means for advancing stock toward said punch block, means intermediate the advancing means and punch block for shearing the stock, the advancing means being operable to advance the stock an amount greater than the length of blank to be sheared, and means independent of the stock advancing means carried by the punch block and operable to lead the stock backward the proper amount to provide exactly the desired length of blank to'be sheared.
31.1n a machine or the class described, a punch block, means for advancing stock toward the punch block,'means between the advancing means and punch block for shearing the stock, and means carried by the punch block and engageable with the stock to move it backward relative to the shearing means the proper amount to provide the desiredwlength to be sheared.
32. In a machine of the class described-.a punch block, means for advancing stock toward the punch block, a stop for the stock adjustably I mounted on the punch block, and means between the advancing means and punch block for shearing the stock after it has been engaged by said stop.
33. In a machine of the class described, a shear,"
means in rear of the shear for advancing stock past the shear, a punch block in advance of the shear movable substantially horizontally toward and from the shear, and a stop for the stock carried by the punch block, said stop being operable 'when the punch block is moved horizontally toward the shear to feed the stock backward relative to the shear to provide the desired length to be sheared.
34. In a machine'oi the class described, a bed, means for advancing stock along said bed past a given point thereof, a. punch block in advance of said point movable substantially horizontally toward and from said point, and a stop for the stock adjustably mounted on the punch block, said stop being operable when the punch block is moved horizontally toward said point tofeed the stock backward relative to said point to provide in advance or said point'a predeterminedlength of said stock.
35. In a machine of the class described, a shear,-
means in rear of the shear for advancing stock past the shear, a punch block in advance of the shear, and means for moving thestock backward the proper amount to provide the'desired length to be sheared, said backward moving shear for stock, means in rear or the shear for moving stock past the shear a length slightly greater than that required for a blank, a punchblockin advance of the shear, and means carried by the punch block operable independently" oi the stock moving means for moving the stock backward relative to the shear the proper amount to provide the desired length to be sheared.
38. In mechanism 01 the class described, a shear for stock, a reciprocating feeder in rear of the shear for advancing the stock past the shear, a punch block ,in advance of the shear. and a gage stop adiustably mounted on the punch block and operable independently of the-feeder ior impinging against an end or the stock advanced by the feeder to slightly backieed the stock to obtain a predetermined length to be sheared.
